i downloaded a godot MIT license asset to generate ropes at runtime from this vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hXNkVEJu10 to make the ropes with physics themselves. it mainly seems used for making puzzles and not any action or parkour and had no built in features for grabbing on to it. to create the attachment to the player i calculate which segment is closest to the player when they interact and teleport the player to it with an offset, create a joint between the rope and the player with the rotation linearly and axis rotation locked so the player rotating doesn't make the rope rotate and bug out, turn off the players gravity and movement and keep them moving to the segment they are supposed to be at each update frame so when the rope moves they stay attached to it. to move up/down I change the target segment and lerp the players position toward it, and then the target segment becomes the current segment when you are close enough to it.
to make the rope swing i get a vector of the players movement direction based on your camera view direction and use that to add an impulse to the current rope segment you are attached to. when letting go i give the player the current velocity of the rope segment you were attached to multiplied by a small bonus

1. Take a reference. Movies, older games, anything.
2. Copy and mix their color pattern.
3. Make everything have feedback when you do anything to it. Example, bullet shell drops with sfxs, sunlight blinds the player a bit, explosion in a room makes the room a bit misty/foggy from the smoke, ect

And THE MOST IMPORTANT PART
4. TONE DOWN your saturation. Soulful games have specific color tones. Making it brighter wont make it better

Finally arrived at a design for this game that I can work with. Place card on stack or discard it, tinder style. Then each card gets evaluated based on your items (not in the game yet). Im making mine using Raylib and C/C++. The project started out (and really is) supposed to be a Minecraft clone with realistic weather patterns, and some sloped terrain (I like the janky look). If I ever end up doing it, improving the look/feel of the natural environment comes after that, and then Ill start working on the NPC civilizations. Itll take such a monumentally long time to actually accomplish the 3rd step (NPC civilizations) that I cant say for certain whether Ill actually complete it. The game probably wont get very far off the ground either because voxel pick/place terrain worlds are all seen as a ripoff of Minecraft (and typically rightfully so), and usually have horrific problems with lag. However, if Im able to implement it, it will probably be the coolest thing that I personally will have ever played, and I will make the source code available so that people can edit and have fun with it, while also selling it for cheap/free.

My advice as a Noobdev to an Almostdev is to not fantasize too much about things like this, because you usually spend too much time in the "planning" (fantasizing/jerking off phase) and not enough in the doing/learning/finding another hobby phase.

Wanting to make your dream game is self-torture. Think about it. You could be making a way easier game that makes way more money, yet you work on a game you'll never finish, that gives you burnout and that wont even sell well.
Dreams are relentless, they don't care about your budget, time, energy or skills. Dreams are more like "dude just make a skyrim, i don't care if you are broke, alone and burnt out, I WANT SKYRIM 2".
Dreams are like a spoiled child dictating what you make.

Keep in mind, your dreams can be like a demon. What matters is your health and well-being, your stable finances. Your game can be like a parasite leeching off of your energy. Like a mental virus. And worst case it doesn't even make money and drained all your savings.

I don't know, maybe someone can convince me otherwise. But I see something fundamentally wrong with chasing your dreams. Maybe just play the games that come close to your dream and try to satisfy your inner demon like that. And then work on a game with a more open-minded chill mindset, where you allow compromises and scope.

That means you can still make a cool game that could be a hit, but it means the game will be its own thing, designed within your constraints. And not a dream that disrespects all your boundaries and limitations.

Released a playtest of my WoW BG game on Steam 2 weeks ago. The only people who've played more than 10 minutes are these weird guys who are obsessed with achievements and just AFK'd for several days straight, queueing for battles over and over to get all the rank achievements. They're friendly enough so I just let them do it. Plus they can't ruin the game for anyone since no one is actually playing.

Of all of the games I am the most nostalgic about, Tribes is what I miss the most. There is literally no alternative. Midair tried and the devs were fucking sillybillies, and then they tried to release Tribes 3 and tried to make it an esport game where they focused on arena play (?).

There's nothing like it. At least Planetside has PS2 still kicking even if there's only 700 players. zFPS games are more dead than aFPS games and it makes me sad that they're never coming back.

I'm starting to think that the best way of judging whether a game will succeed is to see whether its funny even with super simple and stupid graphics.
Just make it a bunch of stick figures and developer art, you don't need more than that to judge it.
Is it very fun to play even in that form? Good. If not, it needs a better gameplay loop or some other/more cool mechanics.

How do you guys test whether a game idea is good? Surely you don't just go for it without prototyping and making sure it'll actually work, right?

I want to have a stack-allocated struct of arrays of stack-allocated structs in C. I don't want constructor functions or anything dynamic in these, I want to be able to just create the struct and define what I need via assignments.
Is it a bad idea to make the sub-structs have a "is_null" or some field that I use to check where the array ends? This way I could set mystruct.substructarray[2].is_null = 1 to "end" the array, even though the array would reserve 10 substructarrays?

For that you will have to use pointers, you cant have structs of arrays of structs on the stack even if using alloca unless you do the entire lot all in one go and mosify the source code to change it, or you use pointers to in the parent to point to the children

Then if you want to dynamically increment it you might have arrays of pointers to structs then you can use a null pointer in the end to denote the end of the list and interate like while(*(ptr++)){ptr->stuff}

But i think it is better to do it in one go and have a size member so you can use for loops

If it is not dynamic then you can use sizeof operator to automatically know by taking sizeof array field / sizeof struct type as tour length then for loops it, you might like that

Ok, it is a waste of space to put an in use / end of list flag in wvery single array just for something you will only use in one slot at any given point in time.

Having a size variable besides the array in the parent struct lets you keep it in one place and makes a fast for loop that can also openmp parallel because it has a known length when starting the loop. But the issue is if you free a middle one you have to shift all the later ones down, and that will break pointer references to themโ€ฆ.

This is what I do 99% of the time, I have my own simple std::vector -style container module for this very reason. Anyways, these structs I want to be able to init with as-little-code as possible, out of convenience and the fact that then I wouldn't have to free(asd) them.

Yeah that should be fine however i recommend you instance it at global scope not on the stack as you might blow out the stack size if your arraysize defines become too big and get a stack overflow, whereas having ot at global scope in the .bss segment can handle any size AFAIK, also might be 1 bit faster as the asm should have less indirection for memory accesses? Probably if your items have coordinates then always pricess them all and early clip based on coords and remove an item by placing it outside the map/clipmask that way you wont have as much of a slowdown when the list is full because it is doing it all the time rather than only when it is full, which might make the framer-rate more stable, even if slower on averageโ€ฆ

Much like roguelite, incremental is a rough set of ideas that connects games. There's incremental games that aren't idlers or clickers. Management is such a generic term that it is hardly useful. Incremental needs to be a tag so someone looking for incremental games can find them. Same for bullet heaven.

Shoot'em up is one of those meaningless genre specifications that is used so randomly it doesn't mean anything anymore. Bullet heaven is a distinct sub genre and there's enough of them on steam that it should be a tag. Bullet hell is a tag.

The tag system's purpose is to help people find games they want to play. Missing tags that are this relevant to the gaming meta is retarded.

So iโ€™ve made the windows .zip file download a folder that is a mac exe folder (with the mac exe stuff hidden away inside subfolders) but then when you open the unzip folder the windows .exe is rigjt there like normal, and i don't embed the .pck but leave it as a separate file so that both windows and mac and linux share the same data file

All you have to do is make the folder name end in .app and copypaste and info.plist file and edit it

Done that and it works, now i am taking it one step further so that the game folder also acts as a kodi plugin if you move it into the kodi addons folder and then the addon.xml puts the ost and cg gallery into a kodi playlist

I also switched from forward to comparability coz forward doesn't work inside a vm and some people dont want viruses

The original term refers to an experiment done by Skinner whereas a rat (or any small animal) had its behavior altered using reinforcement, punishment, conditioning (through the means of flashing lights, sounds, sometimes electric shocks) to press buttons in a certain order to directly get a reward.

The way it's used outside of the experiment, especially in the context of video games, is a system without a lot of depth where the user is also conditioned through flashing lights and sounds into doing something banal like just pressing some buttons without a lot of thinking involved (i.e. pulling the lever of a slot machine), to get a reward that also lacks substance (number goes up). This is in contrast with 1. games that require heavy involvement in playing (i.e. chess, complex war simulators like ARMA or Tarkov, etc.) or 2. games whose reward feels more substantial (discovering the true endings in games with a lot of secrets like Void Stranger/Noita, or becoming one of the best players in a MMO like EVE online which requires many different skills, or just finishing a game that supposedly leaves you with a message that lingers in your mind for many years to come. I don't play story games so I don't know any examples but I often see people cite SOMA for this.)

To use an analogy, skinnerbox is equivalent to masturbating to porn instead of having sex. There's less effort involved but the reward is less substantial too, however it still satisfies your desires on a very basic level. Whether masturbation is good or bad is up to you, I think it can be fine if not abused and used as a complete replacement for the real thing.

Yes everything is ultimately reduced down to "number going up" if you abstract it enough, but it's about how many layers it has between what you do and that number going up. A skinnerbox is just "press button -> number going up" but the more layers, the farther away you get from skinnerbox. You don't just press a button in tactical games, you need to think ahead, consider other factors, long term thinking vs short term, etc.

Another way is to just run multiple physics ticks if needed, but obviously if you only ever aim to wake up for frames, then your frame may get delayed if it turns out there is too much other pending work to be done.

By the way, if you run in browser, VSync will always be enabled. And if your tab is not active, you will not be able to wake up more than once per second. Browsers are a reasonable target with raylib+emscripten.

Still learning Godon't and gamedev, but I've now decided to take the game into a different direction which means changing all the art and menus. Might still be a clicker game, I dunno but it'll have better art and some goblins probably.

Progress time.
I've added dialogue before the game starts just so that the player gets a bit of context on what he needs to do.
I've made some changes to the combat, changed it so that when the player bumps into other party members and they can deal damage when hitting enemy pucks.
Added sfx for selecting new tiles, or if the tile is locked and cannot be accessed.

Exactly. This is all about control, controlling you. Artists are not looking out for YOUR bottom line, ever, they are very self-centred people, and they, and their proxies, the fans, are trying to ensure that they can still control you and your finances, regardless if it's viable for you or not, even abstaining from basic logic.
And I'm sure the AAA industry is happy to throw some more gasoline into the fire to further disturb the indie scene and take out an enormous risk and competitor to them.

Switched to HDRP, had to reimplement camera system because before I was using 2 cameras to render everything now I use one. Wasn't easy but it worked in the end.

Now weapon is also getting shadows from the environment. I'm going full photoreal because it's the current thing to do and there's plenty of resources online vs. if I were to do retro graphics it would be an uphill battle
