In this original sequence of events, Gaster existed for Deltarune's story and hopped to the reborn world along with Sans and Papyrus. His plots would result in a scenario where he becomes strong, enough that he's able to RESET the timeline. Gaster goes mad with power and retcons himself by falling into his creation, with his actions retroactively being handed to different people.

Deltarune as we play it is meant to be an origin story for Gaster and a revelation of the original timeline:interacting with the Forgotten Man and collecting the eggs will trigger Gaster's birth. Gaster does not want us to deal with this "issue" because if Gaster is put back into the original timeline, it creates a never-ending loop.

By coloring in an object and giving it form and identity akin to an existing specific object, you create a unique Darkner that is more dependent on the existence of the creator. Without Kris, the knock-off Rudinns will be completely lost and lose their color.

My guess is that Kris is a wayward Vessel who came out of the "Meat Factory" (Goner Maker) in Hometown's cold storage. The act of inserting a Vessel into Deltarune is akin to creating an OC and putting it into an existing story. The opening sequence is a second attempt by Gaster to change fate and create a new future.

Why else does Kris not want to interact with humans in the library book? Why else does Kris have body issues about being a human and identity issues about wanting to be a Monster? Why else is Kris they/them? It's not because Kris is non-binary, it's because Kris doesn't belong anywhere. Not a Monster. Not a real human. A weird third option that can't be accepted no matter where they go.

I think the big reveal behind the Red SOUL is that it is actually its own character/entity thanks to being a means for the Player to exert control within Deltarune/Undertale. Think about it: we actually have no influence on the game world. Only by manipulating something within the game world via our keyboards and controllers can we interact with the characters, but the SOUL is uniquely stuck to the confines of the game. The SOUL can never be real.

I think for me along with it just being habitual and a comfort (Thus the OCD of feeling greasy without it) since I was a kid that you can get a feedback loop where showering strips the oils off which makes your body have to produce more which makes you shower more which ect ect ect.
