That's how Arona drew sensei previously in a canon segment. It was the first canon depiction of sensei in the game.
Plana also drew sensei looking a bit like anime sensei during valentines when she made cookies that looked like him
The chroma causes whoever it infects to grow larger maybe, but even without the chroma they said his body was covered with bandages and metal plates holding him together even before he died the first time. Chroma makes you look more monstrous, but if you look closely Phrens body is really fucked up under his robes, his robe makes him look imposing when really he's just a corpse under it.

Blacksuit calls him foolish for ever using something like that, save your life for yourself, it shouldn't be sold away cheaply like that. It's not just about understanding the plot, but understanding what the fan expectation out of the setting.
Just take the very first scene for example:
- In the game, you're tasked with commanding Yuuka, Suzumi, Chinatsu and Hasumi against the mobs. Yuuka tanked a shot from the Tiger tank, showing those girls are resilient, without having anyone to even explain it.
- In the anime, 3 sukeban mobs fought the pompadour bots, and explaining that gunshot does nothing to them. Then it just cut to Sensei getting lost in Abydos. The prologue with the 4 starters only happened briefly in the 2nd episode.
Narrative and spectacle wise, it's a complete downgrade from the game. They could've just adapt the prologue exactly as it was, but they just choose to change it completely for some reason.
Think about it, which one is better? Yuuka getting shot at by a tank or some random mob getting shot at by baby lead bullets?

Our BA world never failed because sensei was there, when Kuroko tried to subvert the narrative, she failed because sensei will always cause the story to be a tale of hope, where everyone wins in the end, and everyone is saved. Our world never deviated from the message, this is always meant to be a story of hope as the devs directly confirmed, in contrast to every other game on the market, blue archive will always be a happy ending game. It will always be a game that shits on drama and saves everyone, no matter what deus ex machina or plot device it has to whip out, it will create the happy ending that everyone wishes for, because everyone wishes for the happy ending deep down, which is the point of the story. Every other game on the market is edgeslop, BA promises it will never be edgeslop, the story of hope will always win in the end.
At a certain point BA is a battle of meta narratives; you see this pretty directly in volume1 ch3 with Clockman constantly trying to subvert the narrative, and directly attacking sensei as the setpiece holding the narrative in place. Only to fail each time because sensei always protects the metanarrative of the story, he creates a world where the girls are always saved and everyone reaches the happy ending. As long as the meta narrative is protected, no matter what the girls do they will ultimately be saved, because the meta narrative protects them. And for that to work sensei can't give up on saving everyone, he must be the ideal the story needs.
You want BA to be edgeslop, you want an edgeslop OVA about the failed timeline, but BA is always about not focusing on that stuff, and openly subverting it. Showing that despair always loses in the end to hope.
