newsensei here. Is there any sort of esoteric meaning to the story/setting? V1C1-2 matches up with the story of Joseph from genesis (PMC chief) buyout Egypt out from the Egyptians (Abydos) through usury. The Egyptians worshiped cats (Shiroko) and jackals (Serika, sort of).
Also, is the Shittim Chest the ark of the covenant from the battle of Jerico in the bible?
Regardless, I'm enjoying the story and love the characters.

this is where it surprised me. I expected that, like most big games allowed to get popular, it would be shilling judeo-christianity across the board, but the jews/creditors are the bad guys in V1C1-2 and you're siding with their gentile rivals. Of course, that is confused by sensei being like some OT super jew character using the sittim chest/ark of the covenant to conquer a city/Jerico. I'll have to read more to know what the real hidden messages are, if any. But it's surprisingly anti-jew so far despite so much judeo-christian symbolism.
