It must have been right after 4U was deemed successful enough that they decided to stop numbering entries to appeal to new players. In retrospect wilds isn't surprising given that 4U was the first mainline to have sales on par with portable games and then they totally reinvented the game anyway with world despite finally finding a formula that worked. World was even more successful so why wouldn't they just keep reinventing the series every new mainline to get that theoretically limitless growth? It's just a shame they got too excited and wilds runs like shit hampering that growth. You'd think naturally they'd gamble it all on the expansion making sure to address all issues and really market the absolute fuck out of that. Maybe they'll cut their losses though just focus on the next game

As a new Monster Hunter fan who got into the series with Wilds, I went ahead and bought the PS2 copy of the original game about two months ago, so I could play it on my PS2 and my Sony-brand HD CRT television. It was an interesting and faithful experiment, to say the least.

I have slayed a Rathalos for the very first time today, and hunting it in the original Monhun is a very different experience from hunting one in Wilds. For example, I actually had to use paint balls to know where the monster went, because it would actually fly out of the map and could literally land anywhere instead of pre-determined locations that’s told to me via map. This made me understand that there a difference between the classic Monhun definition of a “Hunter”, someone who plans and tracks a monster before fighting it, while the modern definition of a “Hunter”, who essentially is just a monster slayer and a glorified fightfag.

That said, one very common complaint I kept hearing from supposed series veterans is that Wilds is easy, and the older games are not. I don’t know if it’s just me, but if I’m not wrestling with clunky character movements, the original Monhun is piss easy. All the monsters have very telegraphed movements that you have ample time to react to, but in Wilds? The monster move so damn fast compared to their old iterations. Out of curiosity, I even watched clips on YouTube of Seregios and Lagiacrus and Gore on older games, and they look so damn easy to fight. The way they are being handled right now in Wilds feel incredibly artificial and deviated a lot from these monsters’ original fight tactics from when they were introduced.
I think this obsession with difficulty didn’t come from Monhun fans, but rather Dark Spuls/Elden Ring fags. I haven’t played Rise or World yet, all I know is that the games are easy until the expansions, while Wilds is already getting monsters that cart you in one or two hits no matter how many defense points you have.

The people who play beyond the campaign are the people who have a lot of anger and criticism about Wilds because it's a Monster Hunter game not made for Monster Hunter fans. The audience Capcom designed this game before beat the campaign (if that) then never looked back as they moved on to the next FOTM slop game. It's no one's fault Capcom decided to go down the path they did with this game and to expect people to just smile and pretend like the game isn't flawed at its core is a bit silly. I get not being excited about being around negativity but there's no one else to blame but Capcom. They put appealing to the lowest common denominator over their fanbase and now they're suffering heavily for it. And in true Capcom fashion any fixes they make will be exclusively at endgame but the rest of the experience will still be fisher price baby shit. Monster Hunter used to have a fairly consistent difficult curve but now it's more like a 90 degree angle. It's GOOD they're giving us things like Tempered Lagi and Seregios, but it's not good enough. Especially with their slow update cycle and stubborn need to drip-feed content in a game where people keep saying there's nothing to do. We'll see what TU3 brings with its new charm RNG endgame.

Idk, man. The game runs fine and I enjoyed the hunts I've had. Weapons feel goid and are fluid, as are monster animations and movesets. Yeah, the forced walk n talk sections were a drag but otherwise it's a fine game. Going underwater blew everyone's socks off and it means we will most likely get underwater in the expansion.

I haven't suffered many of the performance issues others ran into, but for me the game just isn't that fun.

Another Steam user nailed it when they described this game as an "autopilot" version of Monster Hunter. The game practically plays itself: your mount will take you directly to the monster, you can teleport all over the map so exploration isn't really required, and then every hunt is pretty easy so you don't really need to focus too much on weapons or equipment which is just kinda silly.

Gameplay was sacrificed to make a pretty looking game. And it does look pretty, but that's about all it has going for i right now. I'll forever miss my beloved MH games on the DS where it was easy to play with people. Don't even get me started on what they did to multiplayer in Wilds.

It's less about styles and hunter arts (though they do contribute to the idea) and more about hitboxes. Before world hitboxes were consistently better in portable which allowed you to stick close to a monster and just hit them nonstop. You would just dodge like a foot to the side and keep hitting except for certain attacks like hipchecks but you could iframe those and keep going. You could get away with not respecting a lot more of a monster's moves which wasn't really possible in mainline outside of like 3U which was the closest mainline hitboxes got to portable. Hunter arts, styles, silkbinds, etc just went even further with the idea to the point where now you don't have to respect any moves because you can just counter even those hard to dodge moves if you want. It's all action all the time. Even mainline is getting in on it now with offsets. Focus mode is a bit much though I really hope they reconsider it

One really cool thing about wilds that people don't recognize enough is that every single craftable weapon line is made entirely redundant as soon as you hit hr21 because a mediocre artian weapon will dab on everything available to make at that point, and then instead of upgrading again you go straight to the rare 7/rare 8 artian weapons, and even a terrible shitty rare 8 artian roll will immediately invalidate the entire fully upgraded craftable lineup outside of lagiacrus for thunder element weak monsters. This means that instead of specifically targeting a single monster and going for part breaks to try and get the weapon you want, you now just passively curbstomp everything , and you get stronger weapons entirely passively and incidentally just by fighting random monsters.

The 'Hunter Tickets' dropped by the tempered monsters also help contribute to this.

I haven't played a second of it since buying Death Stranding 2 two weeks ago.

1) The game itself flopped. It sold 3 times less than it's predecessor
2) There is literally no way expansion is successful because the guy who made Iceborne left the company
3) Just because Wilds flopped, doesn't mean Portable 6 will be bad. In fact there is a high possibility Portable 6 will be better than Rise because it's the second Ichinose game on REngine so hopefully they got a little better with the engine

Capcom went out of their way to fix SFV after the terrible launch because it was easy for them to do and most of the complaints were about the total lack of content and homogenous starting roster. It's more likely that their dogshit proprietary engine simply can't handle the memory strain big games like DD2 and Wilds put on it and they don't understand how to fix it
