I personally don't think any of Hometown's history or Kris's own history is fabricated, it's real .
Toby's writing thrives on his sincerity, theories like "Hometown is all simulated" or "It was all Kris's dream" throws that to the wayside for an ultimately meaningless twist that people will hate.
Toby is using the Dark Worlds as a safe space to explore those ideas already, the Darkner's worlds are a falsehood but that doesn't make them any less important.
You know factually the same is true for Hometown because it's a video game but Toby doesn't need to tell you that, that's reality, you already know it to be true.
He just wants you to imagine that Kris, Susie and Noelle's lives and the lives of everyone in Hometown carry a bit more meaning than that, that's why he doesn't want to sell stuff like plushies of them.

Okay, so I just finished replaying Chapter 2, and gosh, the improvement compared to the first one is noticeable. I enjoyed it, and it's my favorite chapter so far. I also want to add that I liked Noelle and Berdly as characters (excluding the horny moments Noelle has with Susie), and it's a shame they're not party members in Chapter 4. I would have liked to have seen more of them, but hey, we're only four chapters in, so there's still hope.

Also, the fight against Giga Queen is one of the best in the game. It's creative and quite challenging (if you suck at Punch Out like me). This is where Toby's improvement was most noticeable.

(Also it's 3 am in my country, i'm tired)

The reason why he redeems himself so quickly is because he was already being humbled by the Dreemurr family fighting, divorce trauma, basically sharing all of Kris's abandonment issues and even his own situationship having gone [South of the Border].

Personally, the only reason I refer to Kris as they/them is because that's simply what the text says ingame. I don't think they're definitely nonbinary but I don't think they're meant to be a self insert or ambiguous. I think it's just a quirky stylistic choice Toby made for all his protagonist characters.
Pronouns don't even say anything about someone's gender to begin with, plenty of languages don't use gendered person pronouns, and some that do have gendered pronouns use them more fluidly like they aren't meant to define you biologically or whatever you identify as.

Again, I think FRIEND is going to be more of a "how" than a "why" to the main plotline. He'll probably appear and be working with the Knight/Dess, possibly even being the source of her power, though not fully explained in the normal storyline. But the story is still about the Knight/Dess, not FRIEND. He's just a humble servant after all.

The Shadow Crystal stuff is where we see FRIEND the most, and that's where we'll come to learn more about him most likely. Him and the Knight doing that shit on the side as some Plan B separate from the Gaster shit that we get wrapped up in while finding out more about the underbelly of things fits much better IMO.

Yes, his laugh is similar to the Knights, but that could easily be explained by the Knight's power coming from FRIEND.

The idea that this thing is somehow going to matter to the main storyline has no evidence. The "that chair will kick your ass" thing could just be talking about the ERAM stuff since that's also tied with FRIEND things. LIke how the other gacha messages tie to the side stuff of Chapter 3 (most of the others guide you in the Egg stuff).
FRIEND has NO actual presence thus far in the main storyline. He's far too complex of a thing to make a big deal in the more grounded drama around the townsfolk and Dess. Especially since Gaster's already going to be a weird thing present in the "normal" story eventually.

FRIEND isn't something the characters know about at all yet. He's literally used to represent a generic idea of a Darkner in Ralsei's explanation. And that visualization is something (YOU) see, not the characters.
