People love to say 4 is the babby game of the franchise but the early game really has some nasty surprises, especially for newcomers. Anyway, head binds can shut both enemies down but you probably don't have access to them yet. Petaloids only target your entire party if they're below max health so you may want to avoid damaging them first unless you can burst one down before it can act.

You'll be torn apart by the stratum 4 boss, but otherwise, fairly standard with Pug as the easy-to-build heavy hitter with Thunder Fist + Overexertion for earlygame.
You have no elves, so you're missing out actual magic and Chain Blast which is broken beyond belief and V's version of DH's Dominate.
Looks like you're going to have hell with earlygame healing since Shamans don't go online until second titles.
Dragoons always want bunkers at the start to spread the damage and get enemies to aggro your "summons". Harbinger can enable all 3 with its debuff skillset once everyone else unlocks their harder-hitting skills.
Pug's enmity build can flatout oneshot the superboss (when it's sleeping) with extremely proper prep.

i'm most of the way through the 5th stratum in eo1 and have a question on conditional drops. dinolich is supposed to drop the sword rib as long as you don't kill it with a piercing attack, but i kept getting sternums until i killed one where i just had my survivalist defend every single turn. do Survivalists non-damaging skill somehow add the piercing attribute? or are conditionals still luck based even after you fulfill them?

It's better than 1 in my opinion so I don't know who's saying it's the "worst". It just has some design choices that are more unusual. One main thing is that FOEs don't give exp so the only reason to fight them is for the drops, just for the fun of it, or to clear them out of the way. Some quests are also really annoying and you'll likely need to look some stuff up to figure out where to go. Then certain classes from 1 aren't as strong in 2, like survivalist for example. It's more of a utility/support class now and not a great damage dealer.

I think the skill tree design is better and more interesting overall and you have way more classes available from the start since ronin and hexer are available and gunner/war magus are new. Beast is also unlocked after the first stratum so the party building is much better. But that brings me to another quirk of 2 which is that the skills scale very slowly and take a long time to be good. Like Troubadour's buff are very weak at low levels so they'll take a lot of time to get going.

skill scaling is pretty extreme so low level skills feel bad to use, but you can't max them immediately due to costs. Half of everyone's skill tree being generic stat ups feels bad in general since it means you spend a large amount of your skill points on generic skills instead of class specific stuff.

Beast's Roar skill has comical scaling where it's like a 1% chance to inflict terror at levels 1-4 and then like 7% at 5. I recommend putting a quality point into a skill that can stop FOE movement or lure them to a spot which various classes have. War Magus has a skill called "regenall" that heals the parties hp by 1 per turn, maxing at 5 at level 5. I don't know if it's a "trap" skill though, it'll be useful in the first stratum but you'll absolutely need to rest and respec out of it later once HP pools get higher.

Another quirk of 2 is that weapon speed is hugely important in deciding turn order. Swords are fast and will always act first most of the time for example. For this reason, a War Magus will make a faster healer but have weaker healing power. Some weapons have hidden speed modifiers that you need to look up though. Gunners are slow as shit but there's like one or two specific guns that have faster than normal act speed.

It's pretty nice, coming off of EO1 some months back. I'm deep into the 2nd stratum right now. Chimaera filtered me for about an hour but now my team (Land, WM, Gunner, Hexer, Survivalist) is insanely strong. I'm abusing all the broken shit. Chimaera reliably drops a ludicrous 30k conditional that I've farmed to buy an endgame bow for my Survivalist, so now she's broken too.
One thing I like to do early in these games is max out the encounter-killer skill (Surv has it in EO2), so they probably annoy me less than the average player. Exploring floors is comfy when you never have to fight enemies.
I'm told Survivalist and Landsknecht are hot doo-doo in EO2, but it's working for me. I had almost considered swapping out Surv for Alchemist during the Chimaera troubles but no way now. I guess the lesson is these games are what you make of them.

The map drawing is a different experience from the rest of the games by necessity, but I think they did about as well as they could to make that work on a single screen and controller.
Other than that, the HD versions are...HD versions of the first 3 games, with a handful of the bugs that hurt the player patched and new difficulty settings. The prices of them are still too high, but if you're getting the physical copies of the other games, those aren't necessarily cheap anymore, either.

I still don't really agree with this "4 is the most beginner friendly myth" that constantly gets regurgitated. It's not the hardest EO game but I wouldn't say it's "easy" either and you absolutely can make a bad party. Since it introduced two level rests and you have those training items, it takes less time to fix a bad party however. I would actually say that 1 has far easier random encounters simply due to it being heavy on normal attack spam. 4 has less quirks and a more gradual difficulty curve but it's also quite old at this point, something like V or Nexus would be the most newcomer friendly simply due to being more modern. With difficulty modes, any game can be "newcomer friendly" as well. Back when I started EO, I started with 3 and then played 4 after and went onward from there (and did go back to 1&2 as well). If you’re not doubling up on classes, it’s basically impossible to end up with a bad composition in 4 (like, you’ll always have an elemental damage option no matter what you do) and the level gating also pushes you into getting things you’ll actually use rather than immediately booking it for big ticket items. I would not say it is necessarily the easiest title (I would probably say nexus is, but having someone start with that is insane behavior), but it gets you into the modern etrian philosophy very smoothly.

You can first turn the hexer to put all random encounters to sleep before ever being touched so that's good. You might be light on damage though, the ronin is going to be pulling a lot along with the hexer suicide word'ing everything. I've never used dark hunter in two though so I don't know how much damage they'll put up. Survivalist is pure utility in 2 but they'll make exploring the stratum very convenient with their labyrinth skills.

The DLCs that get you the EXP/drop/money tea ingredients en masse are cheaty but everything else is fine I think. The rest are extra bosses (most are cool fights), Highlander like you mentioned, a bonus floor, and some nude portraits for Arianna and Chloe. There are some really good items that can be made from extra boss drops or as a reward for the quest (Bikini Armor and Gold Belt in particular) but none of them are particularly broken outside of Ragnarok which is locked behind the hardest fight in the game, maybe series, on Expert difficulty.

There's no decision involved with forging in V and Nexus. You just upgrade it to 5 then recycle and repeat. With forging in 3 and 4, you can always find an appropriate tier weapon with slots open at any point in the game, and then forge what you want it. The forge slot can be a persistent part of how you build each character while in V and Nexus, you just hope a weapon comes along with what you want on it.

You can forge and stack pretty much every effect you can imagine (stats, chance to inflict ailments/binds, elemental damage, etc.) with some restrictions on a weapon in 3 and 4 while 5 and Nexus have weapons that come with fixed passive stats or skills that usually have to be upgraded 5 times to get the maximum effect from those innate skills and even raw stats (i.e. attack and magic attack) from said weapons.

glad/arb - this is fine. whatever. swords have bind slash to work with wildling, clubs have nine smahes which also works with wildling. zodiac is another subclass to consider, if you want to build into freezing blow, or you want to become a regal radiance battery.
hop/sov - there's some logic here, where having 2 sovs means you can continually cycle arms > regal radiance, and getting full party prevent order is occasionally helpful. insofar as making hoplite actually do its own job, you might want to consider just getting ninja, not even for bunshin but just for the evasion passive.
sov/glad - you can take monk off of wildling, or double down on support with buccaneer/shogun. i'm in no room to judge the glad sub, i did that on my first playthrough and it was so fucking ass
wild/monk - conceptually fine, good tec values and a lot of free turns. wildling barely has the skill points in practice to pull it off unless you hyperfocus on a couple animals. which is fine, too, they only need like 2-3 in general practice. ninja can taunt onto tiger, shogun can force tiger to contribute.
zod/glad - boring, like the glad/arb, but works. consider monk if you are an insane person. consider bucc if you are a less insane person and just want to spam limits.

I whooped their asses just fine with a triple Dark Hunter party so you don't need the walls at all. There's a lot of alternatives like making use of head binds, running a beast, inflicting sleep, blind, or panic, etc. Riot Gun is probably super consistent at stunning them too.
