>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Pragmata, Age of Decadence, A Hat in Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, Civilization, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Scav Prototype, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle, roguelite, shmup, 4x / RTS / city-builders, and RPGMaker games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

With porn mods, they're added onto the game. If the porn is bad, you can still take it out and have the rest of the game. With porn games, the porn is the game, so if one is bad, all of it is bad. And there are many, many bad porn games. But with mods, it's built on top something you're already familiar with and enjoy.
Of course, this only works if you're not a goddamn moron and don't mod games to the gills before you know if you even like it.

>With porn mods, they're added onto the game. If the porn is bad, you can still take it out and have the rest of the game.
With that logic you might as well just play without porn mods. Porn mods are always shit, they're just clunky, unfinished and awkward messes added to the game. They never complement the gameplay, story and characters of the base game. Porn games on the other hand, deliver a complete immersive experience from start to finish (most of the time). They provide a completely different feeling compared to porn mods that are the literary equivalent of fan fiction.

>With porn games, the porn is the game, so if one is bad, all of it is bad. And there are many, many bad porn games.
Sturgeon's Law, 90% of everything is bad. Regular games have plenty of bad shit too. There are plenty of actually good porn games, you just have to know how to find the good stuff. Following that logic most porn mods are bad too. Why bother using them?

>But with mods, it's built on top something you're already familiar with and enjoy.
Like I said, it's better to just enjoy the game separately instead of adding porn that feels like it was just duct taped on or superglued onto the game. The whole should be greater than the sum of its parts. For me, porn games provide an interactive storytelling experience, like a cooked dish with great ingredients that fully complement each other, perfectly cooked to deliver a complete taste. Good games with porn mods are just good dishes that you dabbed shitty sauce on, ruining the taste.

Why are some people like this? Just watch a real puzzle game player play Blue Prince on YT instead, like Aliensrock, instead of playing games of genres you obviously don't enjoy and expecting them to magically morph into one that's more your speed.

I think I'm falling in love with this game. I've bounced off it twice but I'm breezing through it and having a great time right now.
The only thing I hate, and it happened twice now, is having a platforming section right at the edge of the screen, where it constantly shifts perspective. That shit's frustratingly disorienting.
Also fuck I love the setting and environment. Swimming past the huge machinery in the background of Shoreline was the shit and now climbing through what I assume is a huge computer facility or some shit.

shit
play neoscavenger, it at least has gameplay and long term goals
this game is just unfinished, and the only gameplay loop is "fly to a derelict - scavenge for good parts - install a singular additional tile of space into your ship - sell the rest"
and it's no the fun kind of gameplay loop like in cosmoteer or reassembly, it's tedious, boring, takes a lot of time and you barely notice the progress
really, if you want to play as s space scavenger, either go for reassembly (there's a whole faction that's focused on farming space plants and you can even grow them on your own ships) or cosmoteer (and it also comes with fun building where you actually have to think to make effective ships and pretty good combat)

Holy shit, this is fun as fuck. Not to mention the joy of just finding this shit out by myself.
To bad in this particular instance it just opened up a leech infested shortcut to a place I was trying to get away from, but this makes traversal on the surface so much more fun.
Also I thought I should go back to the Industrial Complex to explore in some other direction, because it seemed like I found all there is to find in Shoreline, but yellow guy insisted that I should go back.
I'll be honest, I'm not sure I understand what exactly I'm looking for. Something about those glowy things around the robot, I'm either supposed to charge them with something, find more of them or eat their evil clones or some shit. I'm just a silly cat dude.

I can already feel how this is one of those games that will "ruin" other games for me by being so god damn unique and good at it's very specific niche. The other day I saw a trailer form some cutesy creature collection game that talked about how the different creatures interact. And one of my first thought was how it doesn't look nearly as interesting to me as Rain World.
Same happened with player-driven hands-off exploration and Outer Wilds or player choices and Pathologic 2. Other games just can't compete

Don't have any new screenshots to bump the thread off page 10.
Here's one I took earlier, thought it's cool that there is a destroyed shelter in the game. Which also makes me wonder how the other creatures survive the rainfall. I guess I've seen scavengers and lizards go into shelters before and some of the tubes are inaccessible by the player but could possibly lead to some safe spaces.

There was a bunch of flash games with similar style, but gunsaw is definitely different because of it's physicality
That line originating from the center of the crosshair is where your barrel is actually pointing. Walking, shooting, etc doesn't increase the total spread, instead makes your gun sway around - depending on it's length, ergonomics and your character's handling skills. This adds a lot of complexity, i.e. different weapons have different recoil and movement spread patterns you can play around if you're good enough. And to make sick trickshots like this - instead of aiming you predict how the gun and character's body will react to movement, and then fire at the right time.

Bloat is the future you chose.

You don't get 10x more content by going from 7 GB to 70 GB.
You don't get 10x better fidelity by going from 7 GB to 70 GB.
But game companies will ignore any diminishing returns because suckers will gladly accept 0.1% gains in exchange for 1000% bloat, be it filesize or compute requirements.

Software industry is completely fucked. The only thing that could stop this path of development is a lengthy world war that destroys all high end semiconductor fabs for decades and honestly I'm not sure if even that would be enough.

Oh and personal computing as you know it is also going to die within decades. Think that's exaggerated?
Normalfags already 100% accept their retardphones that they have zero control over and zoomies are completely unable to comprehend computers. Being able to run any unsigned software from any source is way too big of a freedom. It will be gone, mark my words.
Hell, half of you faggots will probably be happy with your Steam console.

We had a promising future ahead of us but somehow everything went to worse shit than dystopian fiction could ever have imagined. Retarded normalfags got into the internet, killed actual useful smartphones with touch shit and the global cultural idiocracy keeps getting worse. My god, entire generations are already lost. And there's nothing you can do about it.
You can only watch.

Okay, but what the fuck do they eat?
I'm down to one food at minimum karma and have not found a single thing to eat so far (unless there is a way somehow turn those flashbangs edible).
I think the part leading up to this was the only time I was ever frustrated on this run. Something about just felt hard but in a very unfun and frustrating way.
I wonder if you can soft-lock yourself there if you run out of spears

Good job, you beat the great filter which is playing the game after dropping it once.
Everyone started the game with specific expectations and when the game happened to be nothing like that they dropped it.
Once you accept that you know nothing about this game and that you're shit at it, then you can start enjoying it for real.

Maybe I'm too spoiled by stylized games that don'y need 16K textures to look good. But look good because of a cohesive style and good lighting.
But devs being shitters is definitely part of the problem. I remember downloading Borderlands 3 for trash-game night with my buddies and that game is also 70-80 GB and I've later read that one of the reason is, that there is tons of dead game in there. Like the game files still contain like one or two unused iterations of the UI that is just never used but you still have to download.
>Normalfags already 100% accept their retardphones that they have zero control over and zoomies are completely unable to comprehend computers
Don't get me started on that dude. Access to technology has never been so easy, yet tech illiteracy is everywhere. It's funny how between Boomers and Zoomers it feels like I technically barely a Zoomer but whatever am part of the only generation that actually understands Computers.
For like 90% of people their PC is just a Google Chrome machine anyways.

I think the big difference this time, is that I managed to stick with it long enough until I started getting the feeling of getting somewhere. I'm fine with being lost in games (in fact I really enjoy it) but somehow in Rain World it was a little too much.
And also just being bolder helped. On my past few attempts I was playing hyper careful. Never straying too far from my shelter, not going out to explore until my food meter was full, always taking a break to get my krama back up after every death. Barely making any progress coupled with not knowing what progress even meant kind of just made me drop it.
Oh and getting stuck in Drainage System didn't help either, even though it made me a lot more confident at swimming, so finding Shoreline on this run was a breeze.

It was always like this with any piece of technology ever. The moment it becomes mainstream and gains mass market appeal, everybody will use it, and most people just don't give a fuck because their lives are a series of predefined actions with zero variation. They have no wonder, no drive to understand, they just want the result they want for the cheapest price they can get.

The problem isn't so much about using higher quality assets, but using them EVERYWHERE without any fucking clue about optimization.

For example a 2011 game might have 4K textures in places, but also 512 or even 256 where appropriate. The same product made with modern "best" practices would have 4K everywhere. And a retarded rendering pipeline that looks worse in some cases but needs a 300 watt space heater to run.

Quickly started a Monk run because I wanted to check something in the earlier stages and I'm shocked how much of the magic is already gone from knowing where to go. To be fair I do have the map from my other character, but still.
Also is the monk just easy mode with needing less food, or what's his deal?

This. Less creatures, they're less aggressive, more shelters and less food needed. Monk is also weaker and slower than Survivor
There's one more major difference but i won't spoil it, you'll notice it if you'll start this campaign after getting through the most of the game on Survivor

As annoying as this sequence is because I'm too impatient and haven't quite gotten the use for the flashbang down, it looks like they still keep running and biting and if I'm unlucky a flash won't save me from that I somehow find playing as prey and hiding in the little tubes very appealing.
I've had the same feeling on one of the previous attempts of getting into the game, where hiding from the vulture while it desperately tried to crane its neck into your hidy hole was surprisingly fun

Interesting
Considering I was just in an area with lots of semi annoying jumping sequences I think I'm happy I went for survivor. Also so far most of the fauna is quite manageable. So don't feel like an easy mode is needed. Might do it as a more relaxed replay sometime down the lines.
Also on that topic, the game has two DLC right? Are they just new characters, or also new areas/story? Should I get them if I enjoy the game or is it not a good idea to enable them while already in a run?

Downpour adds several new slugcats and a few new regions and creatures, each slug has a unique ending but it takes place mostly in the base game world. Watcher is a single slugcat whose story takes place entirely within new regions. I'd only recommend getting them if you still really want more after reaching the end as both survivor and hunter, there's a lot that i love about the DLCs but they definitely fall short of the base game in some ways. The best way i can describe it is that the highs are about as high and the lows are a fair bit lower.

I've grown so comfy not having to "actively" deal with enemies for quite a while. Those birds down below felt more like a stage hazard than actual enemies. It didn't even occur to me that I would encounter an enemy in this "platforming section"
Got all the way up to the room with the weird tentacle slugs. I think I figured out what to do by pure accident, but then I got tied up by a bunch of them and couldn't move until the rain came.
