Kichikuou was the old finale for the series before they decided to make more and made it noncanon. It's a great game and is the basis of a lot of the ideas for characters and plot that the rest of the series uses. 5D is when they decided to reboot and keep making new Rance games. I focused entirely on Sumire in my first run, but I ended the game without a single date. I BEAT A DATING SIM WITHOUT GOING ON ANY DATES. My second run, with Kanna, got her ending, but there is hardly a hint of romance. The plot of the series means that all of these girls belong to the series-wide protagonist. You are not playing as him. Every girl's final date ends in them picking him over you.

The game is generally quite unrewarding. For example, you don’t get anything special for maxing out any particular stat. I at least expected the corresponding girl to fawn over me. At best, all you get is some praise when your stats are getting high. A more specific example is that I lost many days to Sumire asking me to grow a plant and my only reward was a special attack that you can only use once in the entire game. This poor reward's relevance also goes unexplained. You just get shown the attack and told you might be able to use it one day, only to suddenly find it available in exactly one boss fight. Said fight isn't even your final battle, so I spent the final battle searching for it.

Lacking guidance is a theme in this game. Even the first battle doesn't give you a tutorial. To make matters worse, the translation added quality of life features that I can tell the game would be unbearable without. I was at least a third of the way through the game before I realised the basement existed, even though the transaction added extra features to make it more obvious.

Much of the combat system is unexplained and perhaps not even worth explaining. I'll save space by saying no more. You may also notice that I haven't mentioned the plot. It's not worth mentioning. It's just an excuse for the final boss battle.

Reloading is mandatory. Even the translator's notes suggest save states. The randomness is even worse without them because rebooting randomises people's positions. Even with save states, the order of your dialogue choices is randomised. You cannot save state during dialogue because there is a timer in which you must select your choice. I cheated with this heavily and I was still often unsure if I was picking wisely. You could fix a lot in this game by just giving every girl an affection metre.

I cannot stress enough how much you need to focus on one girl if you want to progress. Because your focus on the girl is so extreme, you barely need to think when playing the game. You just execute the same algorithm over and over. This makes the game much faster, but soulless. The best way to stalk a girl involves using an event that you can trigger every Monday morning. The game does not advertise this event or tell you what it has done for you once you've done it. Even worse, you can easily miss the first Monday morning completely.

The series is allegedly well known for its minigames, but the difficulty spike in them is huge. Avoid if possible.

Wow, the original Rance Quest ending feels severely lacking.
Quest is such a huge downgrade from Sengoku and maybe even VI. Combat feels generic with many characters having few skills outside their class skills. Many characters get little development outside their recruitment and "Day in Cidade" event. Even their sex events are generic, which doesn't make sense for Sel especially. A lot of missing character interactions too, like Sel/Crook.

Hope Magnum has a better ending and ties up all the loose plot points at least.
Also, the game feels a bit grindy even with TADA mode + Magnum morurun only dropping 5 levels after the first. The original Quest's grind must have been hell.
