It is one of those games that I hope the development of gets a 2 hour tell all documentary at some point. Every little glimpse of the development of DE we have gotten so far just makes it look like a comedy of errors.
My personal favorite little tidbit being that the 2 timeline thing was originally floated as an obvious way to include both bay and bae. But the narrative lead did not understand what was actually being proposed, so the 2 timelines got in but the actual reason why 2 timelines were going to be included in the first place did not actually make it in the game. Basically a worst of all worlds situation caused by utter incompetence.

It would be even more funny if this was not a series I was invested in.

They're pretty good reaction shots though! I'm satisfied. I could talk at length about why I like LR too, though for not quite as long. I though the timed conversation system was pretty well-implemented. Introducing it by dropping the player directly into a convo with their narc mom is diabolical and it does a great job setting up the dreadful tone of the game. The camera is crazy fun with motion control. The aesthetic of the game is fascinating. Making a game without any global illumination in 2025 is pretty bold. I feel like a lot of elements of this game, like with Remember Me, will make their way into other games. That's kind of Don't Nod's position in this industry: To do interesting things in games that don't do very well so that everyone else can do them in better games later. I say this as a serious fan for as long as the studio has existed. It is what it is. I've always felt that DN makes games more for other developers than the average consumer. There is quite a bit to appreciate technically about the game.

Yeah, that's true, nobody goes as nuts with it as DN. The branching in lost records is pretty deep. It's always fun to watch other people's playthroughs and see entire sequences that I never saw in any of mine, or watch the NPC positionings change in the environment and in some cutscenes depending on the intimacy levels. I can't imagine what the whole graph looks like. There's probably different nodes for positioning the NPCs for every possible intimacy combination. It's a gargantuan amount of manual work that ends up totally invisible to the player. This is why their productions are always so financially troubled and poorly managed I think. They can't help but pour thousands of collective man hours into this completely invisible shit that nobody will notice and then they run out of time to actually make the game. It's like feature creep but for tiny stupid details. But seriously I have to go to bed

Like, I get stuck doing this kind of thing too so I totally get it. It's so hard to decide where to compromise the vision, especially with a game that sort of branches in reverse like lost records. I know the depth here is in service of the core point of the game, that the tragedy itself is inevitable, but you can change how you cope and help other people do the same, but the amount of artistry put into the technical aspects of the implementation is excessive for a game made for external investors. Max was conceived from the ground up with Chloe as her foil. On any serious narrative level she just does not work without Chloe because that is just fundamental to how she was designed. Without her foil, Max is far too passive and flailing to really work as a player character. If you have a problem with this, then you just have a problem with Max as a character.
This is one of the reasons why the Chloe-lite episodes of LiS 1 (episodes 4 & 5) are so weak. Or even why a bay ending is the definitive end for Max as a character and offers no narrative future.
Being reliant upon a foil to really work as a main character is not a failing or a criticism of Max. It is just the reality of how she is as a character.

Chloe has a better personality to carry a game solo. But even then, she is still a much lesser character without Max being present in her life.

#1 reason I keep on seeing is because it didn't respect the player's decision from the first game, on the Bae side of things at least. Granted, it did that, it's followed by the messy situation with Chloe. BtS and demanding fans set the chain reaction for the franchise’s downfall if you really think of it. I was thinking recently about how they regained everything that was sacrificed to the abyss at the end when the trinkets that represented them were returned. Nora gave up her pick and forgot about music until the box was opened. Autumn threw in her skateboard and stopped being rebellious but was able to stand up to her boss about her work hours after the box was opened. Swann gave either a lock of her hair or the flower and had flings but never really belonged to anyone, but resolved to try again when the box was opened. Kat sacrificed her resolve to live in order to save her sister and get the others away from Velvet Cove, but asks Swann to come find her when the her pin is returned. I think ultimately, the game is about memory and the trauma of losing a friend. Either avoiding the memories or returning to them over and over again. Swann is most enamored by the abyss because she tapes everything and watches it over and over, living in and eventually falling into the past. (As lampshaded by Corey at the beginning of the game "nah, she's got me on tape! I'm immortal!"). And we become Swann by playing and replaying the game, looking for collectibles and re-experiencing everything. Of course Kat isn't dead. We're in the forest! She isn't dead. She's making me a mixtape right now! It's clever. The existence of the abyss as a force within memory rather than time is interesting too. When I realized that a lot of the reminiscences in the bar were not only unseen in the flashback, but impossible (like the reminiscence of Kat at the meteor shower) a lot of things about the game clicked for me. Ultimately, I think that it sacrificed too much in pursuit of its vision and killed its own payoff in order to chase abstract storytelling, but it's better than life is strange in that regard because at least the conclusion to the story and mystery is actually present, it's just scattered.

Iirc the ARG touches upon that too, not necessarily a doing of The Abyss but memories in-universe are screwy; there's also the unreliable narrator aspect that's seemingly innate in the way the girls memories seem to resurface. Yeah Arcadia Bay and Blackwell felt like characters, but that worked because Max stayed there. She had time to slow down explore stuff around blackwell and most importantly she wasn't running.

LiS 1 famously just falls apart in the final 2 episodes. BtS has a horrible ending. TC is an incomplete game and just suddenly stops.
I actually like the final part of LR however. Especially everything around that dancing scene, that to me basically just brings everything I loved about LR to the fore at once. It is my favorite moment from any of these types of game by a significant degree and would be capable of holding up the second part of the game.
