That's what age and excessive testosterone does to you. You fuck like a beast while you're young, bitches are oogling, spreading their legs and schlicking all over you, but after mid-20's you start losing hair rapidly and by 40's become almost infertile. The PC game came out. It was initially uncertain if it was an emulator under some sort of wrapper or a pure PC or something in between. It turns out it was reading from a Genesis ROM though, as people decrypted the data file from the PC game and turned it into a ROM that works in emulators and flash carts.

It's still unusable, not ready for the prime time yet.
Ask again in 2028 or, better yet, 2033 more realistically.

And, regardless, usually 2 frames is more than enough.

Also, if you're on modern OLED, there's literally not reason whatsoever to do that, since OLED already has 0.03 ORT by default.

Pixel response != display latency.
The display's processing and vsync have far more of an effect. There's also most certainly an incentive to use it on OLED. 16hz less lag is 16hz less lag. 1 frame of run-ahead is safe. 2 and you're seeing subtle rollback glitches in most games, 3+ is extreme. As he said, though, Duckstation's run ahead sucks. Swanstation's internal runahead seems fine these days. Mednafen core's is fine too.

1 frame of any animation is 16.6 ms ORT.
Modern OLED is inherintly 0.03 ms ORT by default due to tech itself.

What part of it is so hard to comprehend or process?

Only ORT metric matters, because it's the absolute last figure that directly affects smoothness and responsiveness in gayming.

Once ORT is lower/faster than 6 ms, it is already very playable in absolute majority of cases (for example - for competitive hardcore fighting games anything at 4 ms or faster is considered flawless for serious tourney play, perfectly suitable for any online or offline event with high stakes, and for professional tourney FPS scene anything at 2 ms or lower in ORT factor is more than enough to be able to perform at the highest skill level), and at the performance OLED provides, runahead literally becomes pointless, since it's so much faster than even the "mental threshold" of 1ms, that it literally makes any potential "latency" a nonexistent factor.

And don't ever dare to try to "argue" with me on these things. I've been in professional tourney scenes for both the FGC and FPS genre for decades.

You probably fiddled with an option you shouldn't have, and it's now failing to open because it's still trying to load the new bad configuration. Best thing to do is to delete retroarch.cfg and open the program again so it generates a new config. Not gonna lie, this is one of the worst things about RetroArch. It doesn't immediately tell you what's causing it to crash unless you enable logging and look in the log text file, and even that doesn't always guarantee you'll get a straight answer as to what's wrong.

You're talking about pixel response. That has nothing to do with the lag generated by the display's scaling/processing, vsync, drivers, the game's logic; any of that. Just because OLED is superior to LCD (modern gaming LCDs are just ~6ms on average anyway) doesn't mean there isn't a reason to reduce input lag from other sources. Pixel response contribute more to motion blur than lag.

Also, forgot to add that 16.6 ms ORT is 1 frame animation factor at 60 FPS and 60 Hz refresh rate.
Once you double game's FPS, ORT threshold needed to have completely smooth experience at such a frame rate, decreases by a factor of x2 respectively, which in on itself INCREASES screen's refresh rate requirement by the same factor.

So the formula is like this:
1 frame at 60 FPS & 60 Hz = 16.6 ms ORT
1 frame at 8 ms ORT = 120 FPS and 120 Hz.
1 frame at 4 ms ORT = 240 FPS and 240 Hz.
1 frame at 2 ms ORT = 480 FPS and 480 Hz.
1 frame at 1 ms ORT = 960 FPS and 960 Hz.

Refresh rate requirement, which is tied to FPS, grows exponentionally per doubling of ORT decrease.

This effectively and automatically means that a panel/monitor/screen matrix tech that outputs ORT of 4 ms, requires for the game to be run at x4 higher FPS than the default "standard" of 16.6 ms. Basically, nothing in this modern day and age would've been playable (INSANE overshoot and ghosting artifacts, OR extremely inane stuttering due to Vsyncing "catch ups"), if not for VRR tech developments in the last several years. VRR is an absolute MUST, a NECESSITY, once you go faster than 8 ms ORT in your panel/monitor/screen.

BTW, this ORT latency decrease is ABSOLUTE, exactly because it's ORT and not in-between metric such as GTG or other. ORT metrics dictate that the input latency and visual response time you're getting, is EXACTLY what you're getting, which forcefully bypasses any potential "baked in" input or animation latency. So if you have a 4 ms ORT in a monitor and you were to play a fighting game with that, it won't matter how much "baked" input/animation frames devs added, since the ORT metric will actually dictate the smoothness and responsiveness factor of the game, for as long as the FPS and refresh rate of the screen will be able to match it. VRR is a true savior of the FGC, in this particular regard.

I don't think that's the intent, why are you like this lmao, it's a genuinely great game, not some scam like that other genesis game from last month, and besides they would not have released the game on PC first if they just wanted the retrocollector's money. Besides, it's the Exa version that's their real money maker anyway.

Can't really guess why they needed the game to be made for the Genesis, maybe it's really just as simple as Koshiro being nostalgic for it, but in the end it's true that the game feels actually faithful to 16bit era games because it's actually designed for it (apparently it really does work on real Genesis which is fucking insane considering how good the game looks) and as such it really doesn't compare to indie slop made under modern engines that just pretend to be retro really as a way to cut costs and serves you slop.
If they made the game only for PC and modern consoles I just would have preferred they go all out on making the best possible 2D graphics and not 240p garbage, I truly hate when modern devs use pixelshit and artificial limitations that have absolutely no fucking reason to exist today, especially not in a post-CRT era. That shit doesn't even deserves to exist. Earthion on pc has an actually decent crt shader so you know they cared about the presentation, unlike say NG Ragebound also released yesterday, also a 2D 240p game but made under Unity engine, has no proper CRT shader, doesn't do particularly impressive 2D graphics, still has modern stutters and all of this for no reason at all besides cutting cost and getting destroyed by Shinobi. A 2D low res game is just an eyesore today when CRTs don't exist nobody should want them because games from back then only were decent to look at through the CRTs and I hate the indie faggot trannies devs who refuse to understand this REEEEE

60 Hz sucks ass. Simple as.
If you don't have at least 120 Hz (better yet - 144 Hz), applying runahead can actually be detrimental. And, again, the panel itself needs to be able to output at least at the 8 ms ORT effectively at all times, for runahead to work properly. At friggin' 16.6 ms of 60 FPS 60 Hz monitor you will only get ghosting or overshoot artifacts, or will lead to bugs/glitches in the game due to broken logic, or stuttering due to vsyncing. You will get "faster input response", but at what cost? Shit on the screen will be fucked, usually.

>"ORT"?
Overall Response Time.
It is a final performance metric that was coined at TFT Central, the most reputable and highly professional monitor-reviewing source in the internet. ORT is essentially the only metric you should always look for, when you're searching to buy a new monitor. ORT accommodates for pixel response, GTG, and pretty much every other latency or input lag imaginable. It shows the factual real end performance your monitor or TV screen or panel will have in reality, before or after OverClocking/OverDrive of the panel (TFT central does tests at three levels: vanilla out of the box from the factory, OD/OC, and properly finally calibrated to the maximal possible best performance and image quality).

If LCD/QD has higher ms ORT than OLED, and OLED has 0.03ms by default due to tech itself, then, no, it is factually worse, slower, "laggier", no exceptions. There is currently nothing in existence that can beat or match OLED's inherent 0.03 ms ORT, which it outputs at at ALL times.

TFT Central uses Blurbuster's test suites extensively, and they've proven in the past that ORT directly affects clarity of the image, smoothness of movement, draw latency, and input response. And that's before accounting for other things, such as contrast ratios (both dynamic and static) and the memetic Chroma (anything lower than 4:4:4 at 8 full bits of gamut depth coverage should instantly go into the trash, basically).

OLED itself is "HDR" by default, due to how it operates (turns off pixel completely, for "dark/black", instead of dimming a still-working one). What you're thinking of, is Quantum Dot and MicroLED techs, which are recent "alternatives" and middle-grounds to OLED, them usually being IPS-like in structure, but enhanced/improved. You can basically call MicroLEDs or Quantum Dots as "IPS 2.0" of sorts. They're NOT as good as modern OLED (or especially WOLED) yet, but they're definitely a big improvement over standard IPS.

The major downside of IPS (and thus QD and MLED) tech, is that, for it to have proper "HDR" capabilities, it NEEDS the friggin' FALD to be implemented, at a rate NO less than 1000 zones at the least, usually, to be effective. FALD can improve contrast and experience quite a lot, but it's quality directly gets affected by how big the "coverage" factor is (again - "good" FALD is AT LEAST 1000 zones, anything lower is not feasible nowadays) and, since QD and MLED are techs that are "IPS" at their base, you won't be able to ever get such a fast/low ORT as in OLED (or "Counter Strike" eSports TN garbage).

I'm mainly interested in displays that can handle CRT shaders correctly. It's why I tend to use sharp, bilinear shaders on IPS devices. CRT shaders are cool, but they're too damn dark on IPS displays.

CRT shaders are not as much an issue of the screen tech, but rather resolution.
For CRT shaders to be rendered completely flawless and even better than on the tube screens themselves, you need at least 8K with integer scaling. This means that, at the current time being, there are very small number of conventionally available panels that can provide such an experience.

To add even more to that, OLED has proven to be the absolute best type of tech for that, since it's core principle of handing pixels is what exactly needed to match and surpass blank states of the old tube TVs and CRT monitors in quality of image output, so it means that the 8K monitor needs to be OLED to the boot, which is prohibitively expensive and still very uncommon nowadays, and won't become any mainstream at least until 2028 at the earliest (2033, more realistically).

It was proven that it's a thing and it can be done even today, but you will have to bust your ass for such a screen.

Go away. An OLED does not inherently have less lag than any other flat panel tech beyond response time. You're fucking wrong. Only when you crank them to 500-1000hz will you see a difference because at that point they actually run into response bottlenecks.

There is no "Resident Evil 3" on PS1.
That'd be Last Escape/Nemesis you're talking of, which is factually not "Resident Evil 3". It is a half-midquel half-side story, running in parallel with Outbreak and from which Gun Survivor continues.
The actual direct mainline sequel, and thus factual "3" in the franchise, is Code Veronica. BIOHAZARD 4 is a direct continuation of CVC, not LE/Nemesis.

My favorite part about the VB is that when it was discontinued my local store was clearing them out for $20 bucks each with 3 free games so I picked up 3 of them and got basically the entire library. Also had a mail-in rebate for like 4 free batteries or something iirc. I still have 2 untouched in their boxes. They practically paid me to take them.

And the thing wasn't even that bad, the games were fun and the gimmick was cool.

I would say yes with caveats:
-Ds emulation is decent enough that you can run most of the games without problems.
-3ds emulation is good enough that you can play most of the library with slight problems.
-Vita is pure lottery making it not recommended. 50+of the library is not playable regardless of compatibility reports.
-Ps3 emulation is fine on paper but practically useless because of the constant regressions and dogshit vulkan implementation.
-360 emulation is useless. You need to hunt down fixes on github for practically any game.
wii-u emulation is fine, especially if you just want to play the popular stuff.
-Switch emulation is not very good because your only options is a stuttering mess or a mess general. There Is always something wrong with games or the performance sucks because of stuttering.
-psp emulation is on dolphin level, might be even better.
Just stick to portables and 6th gen.

I wouldn't say "just stick to it 6th and portables", though. Just, "measure your expectations and youtube/github emulation for >=7th gen console games"
Also, modern arcade emulation is fairly decent, though it's hardly emulation. TeknoParrot is just a front end and series of wrappers for games that are Wintel already.

It is. But it feels good, I know because I have some stuff just far from all of it. It's the coomer version of retro. Fuck me, I like opening the original box and reading the physical manual. But yeah, I should probably look into what needs to be done to hack the ps2/gamecube/wii. I've never fucked with it strangely, I have only done portables, psp/ds/3ds. Or just emulate it if there are no issues but it might not work with the game (you) want, especially the more obscure it gets. That's what I hate.

It's still the same chips, RAM, OS, and APIs in all of these, to the degree where it's hardly a difference. It's more likely heat throttling them differently. The HDD speeds could be a factor too, if they aren't streaming fast enough it will hitch more. These can be replaced, though. I bet at equal temps on similar HDDs they are they same.

Let take the Switch as an example, most of it's best games are 30fps and look blurry as fuck and it's just not an enjoyable experience at all to me, I'd rather not play some of these games at all in these conditions, depending on the genre, and I'd rather have something that fixes those fundamental issues even at the cost of a few bugs as long as it's nothing major.

not only that, here's another mess;

https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Windows_NT_5.x_emulators

"WOW64 layer lets 32-bit apps work on 64-bit Windows, and you can pair it with wrapper solutions which can further smooth out a lot of bumps. Plus, DirectX 9.0c is still supported in Windows, helping older games keep chugging along. Intel’s proposed x86-S architecture could shake things up by dropping support for legacy stuff like 16-bit real mode and some 32-bit rings. It’s just a proposal for now, not in actual CPUs yet, but if it happens, it might make running old software tougher down the road. Intel ARC GPUs lack native DirectX 9.0c support, using D3D9On12, which may impact performance and compatibility for older games, fortunately improvements have been made since then. On top of that, some copy protection methods—like SecuROM or SafeDisc (or worse; Online DRM)—can be a real headache on modern systems (e.g., secdrv.sys situation). They could depend on old hardware or software features that just don’t exist anymore, leaving your game disc unplayable. And then there are user reports about recent Windows updates causing trouble: the EmulateHeap compatibility shim broke on Windows 11 22H2, and Win32 API changes in 24H2 have messed up games that rely on quirky behavior. Be aware that critical library functions may be deprecated in the future, as seen with the UserRegisterWowHandlers case."

Bit of an odd question but would it be possible to make a Japanese-only DLC for PS3 install on an NTSC-U or PAL copy somehow by changing the ID via HEX editing or something? In Binary Domain it has skins for the characters when you play in multiplayer that let you play as Yakuza characters. If you are in the western versions online you can still see said characters but can't play as them meaning they're still in the data, so theoretically if you could force the Japanese DLC to somehow be recognized as NTSC-U or PAL DLC would it be possible for it to work in game? Or is there some sort of integrity check to prevent such a thing? Because it's clear they're still in the game it's likely just never been an option for players.

Are people really using dolphin when they imply it's good or they just assume based on their disingenuous blog posts?
Some may not realize, but they invest more time in making it look good rather then be good. The entire project revolves around their blog posts, finished PRs are delayed for months until the matching blog post is ready, their github bugtracker is intentionally disabled to add a roadblock for the people who tries to report bugs forcing them to create a new account, even though they already have one for their forum and another one for their github, still lacks basic features like unlimited saves, you install a few wads on the NAND and you can't save your games anymore.

1. I need it to run Windows OS and NOT Android OS because I want to use melonDS. No, I don't want to use DraStic, melonDS Android port, etc. I'm willing to install a Linux distro if necessary.
2. It doesn't need to be bigger than 11" or so.
3. It needs to have at least 1 USB-A or USB-C port albeit this is probably guaranteed.
4. Ideally, it has a touch screen and it comes with a stylus.
5. If it can emulate 3DS games, then that's even better.
6. My budget is <$500. I don't want to spend upwards of 4 figures just to emulate DS games.
7. No, I don't want to buy a DS, a Steam Deck, etc.; they're not what I'm looking for.

I tried a Fusion5 tablet. It was so slow that I didn't even make it to the desktop. Yes, it's that bad.
https://www.amazon.com/Windows-Fusion5-FWIN232-Quad-core-Bluetooth/dp/B07HY8X46F/

Then I tried a Microsoft Surface Go 2 tablet. It wasn't able to run a fully 2D DS game without it chugging on me, so I'm guessing that it has insufficient hardware.
https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Surface-Go-2-10-5-Touch-Screen/dp/B0FG8NTXTY/

I drew a rough idea of what I want to do with it. I want my next order to be the one.

Yeahhhhh, reading the reviews, I'm not sure I'll be checking it out, not now at least. Some of them do seem like they got filtered by the difficulty, but there's some comments about poor design in level layouts and an inconsistent difficulty curve (starts off insanely brutal, gets more manageable toward the middle, then gets stupid hard again at the end). Seems like he's already releasing updates to address some concerns.

Love this comment btw

Sounds like a you problem, because that thing looks more than capable enough to emulate DS.
You have to debloat your copy of Windows.
Disable worthless services, stuff like Defender and Windows Update that hog your device's CPU and so on, and of course you'll want to update the iGPU's driver as well.

Thanks for bringing it up, I'm gonna bookmark it.

It's possible with certain specific adapters and 3rd party drivers, or at least it was. I don't think the DS2 drivers have been updated in years as everyone uses DS3s instead so you'd probably have to use a really old PCSX2 build too. Check the PCSX2 forums/discord. Probably not worth the hassle though.

I wanted to play Army Men Major Malfunction. HW messes everything up, fine. I'll play with software. Except about 8 seconds into the first mission the last bit of the radio message gets stuck playing forever in one audio channel. The Xbox version obviously isn't an option so what the fuck am I meant to do?

torzu is basically just the last yuzu git snapshot with like 9 or 10 commits to it since it was created last summer

How do you know? Xemu isn't half bad and the files to get started right away have been posted here.

lel, for some people maybe. I imagine they'll just 'nuvo any further releases or come up with some baroque nearly uncrackable shit otherwise.

No point in wondering what's up with it til EXA gets its well deserved and overdue crack. Extra content is contractually mandated and exclusive to that platform. It won't be worth thousands of dollars, anyway. Looks like some sort of arrange mode, and that version may have some extra/remixed OSTs to select from.

I will give Earthion this, it's one of if not the best commercial aftermarket-ware I've played. 99% of all nu-ROMs I've pirated haven't even been worth the time to hunt them down. Free romhacks are usually a lot better. I almost feel bad about pirating it. Then again, they'll get their money back from EXA-pigs and signed exclusive content to it so fuck'em.

Was always bad, the only reason to use it is if you were so grill-brained you couldn't get Flycast working.
>drastic
At least delivered and was the best option on Android for ages. Worth the pirate at least.

Funny how ZPF really got overshadowed by Earthion. Need to get it an honest shot soon. I'm sure it's mid. Roundeyes can't make shmups like nips.

Earthion's real error is they got lazy and didn't bake a PC version. It was natural for an emulator wrapper to get cracked and ripped like this. How hard is it, with the source and assets, to make a legit PC version?

yeah they were asking for it. As much as I love the game it's a huge fucking shame that it's not a true pc version.

Predictable. I don't know why they'd make such an elaborate hack and not go all the way. Seems kinda-neat so far anyway.

Yes. It does have a poorly baked in DOF just like the PS2 version. And?

is it like, not supposed to emulate it? What do you actually want here? I know, you want friends. This place isn't for friends, ciggy.

I tried spikeout battle street in Xemu and it was a broken down pile of dogshit. An emulator only gets to waste my time once.

That's an extremely silly stance to take on something preliminary and rapidly changing, and you're missing out considering the major NV GPU improvements over the last year. YDY, though.

I've also played Spikeout in Xemu recently. It works fine during gameplay but the FMVs are bad. Is that your issue?

The FMV issue is annoying, sure, but it's Spikeout.

It ran at about 4 FPS and graphics were rainbow vomit. Have a working product before you try and sell it to people. This isn't AAA gaming, it's not going to work.

WOMM. They aren't selling it. Emulators, especially ones that target >=6th gen and utilize HLE and translation from GPU to GPU, naturally go through a lot of growing pains. It's working pretty good outside of the FMV for me. Check it out again if you have a half decent CPU/GPU.

Xemu may be one of the few "next-gen" emulators actively getting better.

Cuckstation was a promising emulator when I first tried it. It's just that promise was utterly squandered. Xemu has no promise. It was a broken pile of dogshit and I won't be trying it again. You only get one first impression.
