Nothing sells anymore so at the very least they could stop using the same fucking characters every 6 months. It wouldn't make a difference to the game's performance at this point.
We're in an era now where a Thracia banner headlined by Machyua and Leif does better than an Awakening NH banner with Tharja and two Robins so any claims based in salesfaggotry are out of the window.
"They don't sell" isn't an excuse anymore because nobody sells. So they could at least stop using the same boring mid characters over and over again in the span of less than a year.
This isn't just "Engage bad" either because the Awakening NH banner was the same way and it fucking sucked because of it, we had literally JUST had Noire and Tharja on a banner 8 months before. I only played for a bit, mainly because I'm pretty buzzed right now, but it looks like it will shape up to be a pretty solid game. I think for some, the voice acting will become grating. It reminds me of the aforementioned Minish Cap but upgraded. You can collect a material called Magicite and turn it in at a shop to what appears to be a sort of gacha-like system to get various perks, such as reduced charging times for your weapons and increased attack power. An NPC in the starting town mentioned that there's a chain sickle weapon that is effective for crowd control thanks to its sweeping attacks, so I assume different weapon types will have various inherit effects. You can block to avoid damage, but there's a meter that appears, presumably meaning you can't just guard all day long. Aside from your sword and shield, you start out with bombs, which in Zelda-esque fashion, can blow open certain walls and a bow which can be charged up to fire a triple shot.

Engage characters, like Fateswakening characters, are just random anime tropes with no thought put into them.
People say 3H has better writing because it cast a wide net and every character is a lot of things with most of those things linking back to the worldbuilding of Fodlan.

You take Chloe and she has two personality traits:

Why is she like this? Because those are the tropes they wanted to do.

Then you compare her to 3H's version of dude food lmao pegasus knight and Ingrid:

And then the game actually uses the worldbuilding to explain why she turned out the way she did. She comes from Faerghus. Ingrid, having grown up in this environment, now idolises knights and chivalry. Ingrid therefore wants to be a knight, but there is a problem with this because her region of Faerghus is also one of the most impoverished to where they experience harsh famines even compared to the rest of the country. This makes big banquets and fancy food a luxury, which is why she's fixated on food. But more importantly, it means she's a bargaining chip in a political marriage to less impoverished regions to get more resources. But Ingrid doesn't want to be a housewife because then she can't be a knight. Despite this Ingrid was in love with the original person she was matched with, who was killed in a terrorist attack by the Duscans. This makes Ingrid highly xenophobic against Duscans. The homophobia is just because she's based.

Ingrid is probably one of the least interesting 3H characters and she's got more nuance than any character on Engage. This is what people mean when they say Engage has shittier writing.

For the sake of doing the story? After the first book or so, each chapter only takes 11 stamina to do on the easiest difficulty. You have 99 stamina, and will get more while playing the levels, so you can do 9+ of 13 chapters of a book in one sitting.

A lot of the free units are worth using, even now.
Felix and Gullveig are two free CYL units that could each practically solo the story up until the end of the last book.
Eir, Peony, Reginn, Ash, Seidr, and Ratatoskr are all good to great units. They're also free from doing their stories. I hear Rune is good, but I never used him. I do know that Ratatoskr can nuke some of her family at the end of Book 8, though.
The chapters also include the animated movies, but sadly Book 7 doesn't include the CYL sidestory they did.
