Originally, production on this show began in 1992, and was meant to come out that year to tie-in with the release of Sonic 2. It was a partnership between SoA and DiC to expand the Sonic brand, and SoA even provided DiC with Sonic 2 concept art to serve as reference
However, the network they were pitching the show for, ABC, wanted the exclusive rights to it's broadcasting, while DiC wanted the show to go on syndication. They settled by making two shows, one exclusive to ABC and the other for syndication, which caused a delay of over a year until 1993. Originally, the "Sonic the Hedgehog" show was going to have the same setting as SatAM but would be much more lighthearted and goofy and compared to SatAM.
This lightheartedness was transfered onto the syndication show, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, while the "Sonic the Hedgehog" show kept the setting but was made much darker as an attempt to distinguish both shows and avoid brand confusion
Due to both SatAM and AoStH inheriting elements of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" pitch bible from 1992, most fans consider it a "split" from the original show's concept

Sonic Boom was never a spin-off, it was always planned to be a reboot of the franchise.
Even if IDW dies, it doesn't mean the characters like Surge or Whisper will be vaulted as SoA and SoJ has expressed interest in using them beyond the comics.
Sonic 4: Episode one was loved by fans and critics at launch. The hate for it was from a small minority on Sonic Retro until Cypershell made it widely known why the game isn't good.
Archie fans actually loved humans and never pushed them away.
Sonic X-treme wouldn't have saved the Saturn, had the game actually came out.
Yuji Naka isn't some evil asshole, he wanted to make sure that the Sonic series was up to quality standards.
Lost World was never meant to be a Mario Galaxy clone. It's a spiritual successor to Sonic X-treme and it was originally meant to be a Classic Sonic title.
Shadow was always planned to be part-alien since Heroes.
The Sonic Rush dualogy was originally non-canon until Generations decided to make them canon. The same applies to the Advance trilogy and Battle.
Silver was always planned to be reintroduced into the canon with Sonic Rivals. Akin to Shadow, this was his "Sonic Heroes" reappearance.
It was the 4kids cast own decision to not return. Jason Griffith could have easily continued to voice Sonic and Shadow, but he decided not to.
Most people don't care for Rouge's censorship.
Amy being obsessed with Tarot cards is a element that was half-assed reintroduced into the canon because Sega doesn't know what to do with the character anymore.
Knuckles was never intelligent. He's been a bumbling idiot since his first appearance.
Eggman being a dad doesn't make him stop being evil
Frontiers did not save the franchise. The movies did.

The plot doesn't happen to him, he happens to it.
Regardless, the important thing is that within whatever narrative you have crafted for Sonic, you still keep "Sonic" himself accurate to who he is and how he operates. Before asking "why can't Sonic regret", you should try to understand why "Sonic doesn't regret" is even a trait in the first place and where it comes from.

The writer/story/circumstances/universe reveal the dead end to just be an obstacle, and so Sonic never needs to change paths. Sonic just hitting his head into a wall until he either dies or something outside his control happens to save him is cringe. I think the act of changing is more admirable and inspirational than either of those two choices, as picking a different path takes a whole different kind of courage. Regretting and admitting fault takes a whole other level of humility. And then when he's done going back to the starting line, he can go back to moving forward, knowing there's not only one path he can take.
Although, I'm not sure whether to interpret W*ndnic as someone who chooses only one path or simply runs in the void with no direction in mind, but they're both bad.

Amy is "Sonic's Girlfriend: The Character".
One of Sonic' own character traits is a refusal to be in a committed relationship. AKA, "I would never have a girlfriend".
The contradiction between having a character who IS "Sonic's Girlfriend" by design, as in his ideal dream waifu incarnate, and Sonic's own refusal to actually commit to a relationship with anyone in the first place, is the central focus of the Sonamy chase dynamic.
But it flies over everyone's heads. Largely because Sonic Team have never actually dedicated a proper game story to actually showing and explaining the dynamic.
The very important yet downplayed, subtle fact is that Sonic DOES like Amy. He shares feelings for her. But whether or not he does or doesn't was NEVER the point. The actual point of conflict is that Sonic doesn't like "committed relationships".
Meaning: You can swap out Amy for ANYONE you'd prefer Sonic be with. The simple fact of the matter is, Sonic is never going to be in a committed relationship. He will never accept that. Ever. It doesn't matter if Sonic is madly in love with this person deep down, he does not want to be in a committed relationship, PERIOD.
Sonic likes Amy just as Amy likes Sonic, but "relationships" are not Sonic's thing. Sonic values his own personal freedom way too much, and so he keeps running towards the future. Amy, meanwhile, is always happy to chase after him. Not to slow him down or force him into marriage or anything like that, but to simply be by his side at all times and experience the thrill of adventure that Sonic always brings to her life.
Even in Sonic X, the same show where some of you wanna use that one episode and try to claim it's Amy trying to date rape Sonic or whatever, has Sonic actually directly "confess" to Amy in the season (series 1) finale before that episode ever existed. Sonic X's original planned run ended with Sonic making his feelings clear to her, personally.
Sonic likes Amy. Just not relationships.

Anyway, that's the idea that the Sonic series is built on. Sonic was designed with a "get-it-done" attitude as a driving factor in what defines his very essence, and what they present as an admirable trait.

The point of Shadow's own character design is that he is supposed to be identical to Sonic, period. They always reiterate this in all his profiles, for a reason. It is a fact of Shadow's character that he is identical to Sonic. And with Silver, they were very clearly copying what they did with Shadow throughout 06's story.

IDW OCs aren't really allowed to be that. Surge is the closest, and she's a female tenrec for a reason: because SEGA didn't want them just making another hedgehog.
Beyond that, though, it's simply because when it comes to OC making, the pendulum swings between wanting to be an even cooler Sonic, and an even more vulnerable or relatable Tails, or whatever. The IDW staff seem to largely like more Tails-like characters.
