I've tried flak armor, but I run out of components after one set. I'll try plate armor instead this time, there's just so few components on the map ever to waste them on sets of armor. Supposedly it also simulates bullet trajectory, so someone behind a sandbag can't be hit in the chest or legs, as that's covered. The side effect is that if your pawns ever take damage in cover, it's almost always going to be a headshot. So you have people dropping dead from full hp.
Yayo has ammo too, but it only comes in 3 tiers, like primitive ammo, industrial ammo, spacer ammo. It's fairly compatible with most mods out there because it only looks at the weapon's tech tier. It has a weird armor system where higher tier armors get a bonus against low tier weapons, so you won't defeat power armor with bow and arrow. A side effect is that if you get early game mechanoid raid you're fucked, especially with a tribal start. Your best bet is beating them to death with clubs and maces.
Vanilla Combat Reloaded has no ammo, only better calculations for aiming and accuracy, better armor calculations, and some melee changes. It's the simplest and most compatible mod out of the three.

The other combat mods take vanilla combat and more or less tweak values so armor is better and shots are more accurate.
Combat Extended meanwhile is a huge jump that turns guns into proper murder machines. CE combat is way more intense as the video shows.
