I've always thought the Vessel would just be (You) making choices without Kris's filter, but this can't be the case because Gaster still makes a distinction between you and the Vessel, it seems that thing is it's own person.

throughout the game, it seems like kris can keep the soul out of their own accord, and for long amounts of time. they spend a whole night doing their duties at the end of chapter 2 (and they talk to noelle during the genocide route) which implies they have indefinite autonomy over their own body. they also seem to talk in between dialogue boxes, as ralsei, susie, and every other character react to something they've said, regardless of the broad choice you the player have chosen. kris is using us, the soul, to their own ends. we just don't know what that is yet.

Completley unrelated, but y'all remember when the Pacifist Route was supposed to be a secret instead of one of the game's main characters specifically telling you to play a specific way to "have a happy ending"? If my choices matter, don't tell the players to play a specific way. That's why every relevant Deltarune Let's play on the internet is a pure Pacifist Route. For some unknown reason, Toby Fox felt the need to condition his players to play pacifist from the start, with NOTHING to favor an alternative.

And of course, the later chapters make it worse with the deranged recruit system that has no reason to not let you recruit a different Darkner if you whacked one. That guaranteed a pacifist route from almost everyone, and it's shit.
