All the lore I really know is from the warcraft games and the warcraft story "ends" with wc3 as far as I'm concerned. Class fantasy is fulfilled by the flavor/function of abilities which is already done, it isn't tied to muh numbers.
People who want a more laidback time are going to pick a ranged class, then further narrow it down by class fantasy. Having only one 'easy' ranged class will just turn more of these people off.

Ranged's appeal to most people is that it is inherently easier than melee's. Adding more mechanics targeting ranged will just turn a lot of the players off.
You can't change the fact people will INTUITIVELY pick ranged when seeking an easier playstyle.
Adding more risky playstyles like Surrender to Madness for Legion Spriest which are optional and only puts the onus on those who pick it is the way.
