"I want to exist!" line from Mephiles was done by Sonic Team (according to Ian), but it's not in the Japanese script. That's weird. Also, the manga had the line where Shadow showed sympathy towards the Biolizard like in english, but the japanese version had Shadow more callous to it.
Is the full english script some kind of a proto-script (to the japanese)? How much did Ian and Sonic Team write between the two?

Rereading IDW. I see now that they took Ian out of Archie but they never took Archie out of Ian. The characters still act as if they're a team who's job is to protect the world. Even after they stop the major threat, they start dedicating their loves to stopping the next threat and cleaning up. This is just something they never do in the games.
I think this is a silly thing to get mad about, so it doesn't bug me. It's a pretty normal assumption to make when the characters spend 90% of their screentime saving the day. It's interesting that this interpretation carried over from archie.

The story didn't go anywhere because it wasn't planned to. Ian has repeatedly said Amnesia Sonic was a bookend for Amnesia Tinker, and he quickly needed to clean everything up to hand Evan a clean slate book to begin her run. So there was never more to do there except for Marine, who WAS restricted because Sega does not let you introduce major Sega characters at the ends of arcs.
Since then, if you haven't been paying attention, we've seen Marine and the Jeweled Scepter as Blaze was looking for villains and couldn't find any.

This might sound really autistic and specific but it's a general trap all the IDW writers fall into. A lot of fans insult them by claiming they're trying to write Spider-man. I don't think that's the case. Spider-man's one liners are meant to be funny while Sonic's one-liners are meant to be cool. I think Ian and friends are trying to emulate the way Sonic is written under Pontaff.
In the Adventure and dark eras you would almost never hear Sonic say an actual joke in the entire game. At most it's a quip to make him sound cool.
Sonic is also more reactive than proactive. Which is a hard pill to swallow. It takes a lot to put him ahead of the problem. The fact that he's a super fast hedgehog causes people to write him as proactive.
Sonic isn't egotistical. This is something Ian has started doing more recently, especially in the DC crossover. It's easy to see why. Sonic has done arrogant things like run backwards while racing Sam Speed. The difference is 90% of Sonic's dialogue in the DC crossover is some amount of mockery or boasting when in the games he really only saves that for people who antagonize him. It's a really important distinction. This is the reason why there are people who will argue that he isn't cocky. Because the only time you see him acting hostile out of turn is in western media.
I could go on but most of these are alleviated by just making Sonic quieter.
