in principle, they're just another of Danuser's - Or any other of the usual suspects at Blizzard's - repalcement elements that only existed to cut ties with the established continuity. In their typical arrogance however, they couldn't just do something new, they had to take snarky condescending potshots at the established continuity and also because it was so blatantly the same thing but "cooler because new" so it was a potshot in itself already.
Metzen re-integrating them is arguably better than just memoryholing them because then people will stop asking questions, and since they are so puddle-deep in their own lore it's just like when he remade Draenei into Eredar (or vice-versa, depends on the perspective I guess) so I guess it's fine.

The reason most people played Horde back in 2007 was that the Horde was for the kids who hated playing "knights and castles" with princesses and shining armor but that is precisely what the Draenei were. The Broken and the Shamanism were almost entirely drowned out by "Vindicators" in plate armor surrounded by radiant light swinging giant librams of totallynotcatholicism around, or by the constant reminder that this is an alien-species whose technology and sciences rivals the Protoss (and the references to the Protoss didn't help over the years, either).
Akama and the lost Ones were "Horde" but so opposed to Orcs that they would have perfectly meshed with the Alliance, a race of ferocious ambushers and a grudge would have suited them perfectly.
