I played through the chapter story, it's mid.
It's certainly a story that makes sense, but it's not particularly fun or compelling. It has some pretty hackneyed and cliche attempts at building tension while smoothing over more interesting and natural points of tension, and for all that happens in the chapter it feels like we didn't really accomplish anything. The chapter has also failed to make me care about any of the new obol squad members, SEED especially (though maybe that'll change when I do her side story). Maybe I'm just too much older than the target audience, but I found that the goofy character moments only made obol squad feel immature and kind of incompetent. Normally such moments are a plus for ZZZ factions, but Obol's a branch of the military, it kind of should be serious; it feels like the cops take their jobs more seriously than the military squad, and that includes the NPCs.

The side stories are where their writing style and outlook for the game (casual living in a society facing apocalypse) can really mesh, since they don't have to pretend to be a "huge epic" story with "deep lore" or anything. They're still hit-or-miss, but they're generally more relatable; Nekomata, Rina, Burnice, and Harumasa all had good side stories.

I've played Genshin, HSR (up to Ampohreus), and ZZZ. I think ZZZ has the worst story, but it's the one I don't mind reading the most, simply because of the pacing. ZZZ's story might not be as interesting as Genshin's or HSR's the few rare moments where you actually get invested, but it's not fluffed to shit with 8 hours of empty meaningless dialogue to just pad out the playing time. It's relatively quick to the point. I'd rather have 2-3 hours of mediocre writing than maybe 1 hour of combined interesting bits hidden in 10 hours of mostly dragged out never ending rambling about nothing.

Amphoreus was so boring that I stopped reading the story. Natlan was ok. About in line with the rest of the regions. It didn't have the same highs, but it didn't have the same lows either. I think Natlan was the most consistent region story wise. Just "alright" all the way through.
