Let’s talk about Toru’s latest P-SSR.

Toru is auditioning for a Halloween TV Special. The show is about a maid called Alma who lives in a mansion and allures people to enter in order to absorb their life energy. The director is conflicted between picking Toru or another actress. The other girl has the skill, but Toru gets the aura. To find out who will get the role, the director decides to ask both of them to act and shoot a short clip as a test.

Before the camera test, Toru gets a chance to talk to the other girl. Since the other girl is relatively new, she is fully on it, and she is a little bit surprised, or even disgusted, by how little motivation Toru has for the role. Essentially, Toru is there because the Producer asks her to do it, so she self-doubts a little bit for her lack of enthusiasm. The result is out and Toru gets the main role, while the other girl gets a minor role. The other girl basically gets a Madoka-esque moment and curses Toru to her face for taking other’s hope and dream without feeling anything.

Toru feels a little bit unsettled and she asks the Producer about it, and the Producer tells her that if she felt something wrong, then what the other girl has said may not be exactly true. Then, the director tells her that the reason he gave her the role is that he saw some sort of killer instinct, a hunger in her eyes, something that Toru may not realize. The filming is very successful and everyone is happy about it. Toru has met the other girl once again. She congratulates Toru and her performance, and Toru tells her that from now on she is going to show her motivation bit by bit. (1/2)

I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like this card. As a somewhat traditional part of the Twilights collection, this card acts as a mini summary for what the idol has experienced over the year. Using the story in the show as a parallel metaphor for what Toru is doing is a fantastic decision. Similar to Alma in the TV show, one might believe that Toru isn’t even trying while still getting what she wants. However, as the previous P-SSR7 has established, Toru is not as airheaded as people might seem, Toru is hungry for challenges. But right now we understand that not only that, she also subconsciously understands what it takes to win.

Another interesting thing to talk about is how the writers slowly shift their writing style. I am going to be honest here, I genuinely do not understand what is going on for every card before P-SSR6 (the solo collection one), the worst one is certainly P-SSR5. But for the newer card, the writers clearly tone down the vagueness of the story for easier comprehension. Of course, the signature Toru inner dialogue will still be there, but there are enough clues here and there that you will understand what she is thinking about 90% of the time. This card shows the same shift, and the writers did a good job balancing out the metaphor and the actual story, and it is a great thing to see.

The only nitpick I will say is that I just don’t know why they decided to give Toru two Halloween themed limited cards. And not only that, both of them look kinda the same. Can’t they make a yokai theme instead?
