When you ask retards about an asset in a void they'll say they prefer the higher res because they think that means it's better. What actually matters is the aesthetic as a whole. A retro aesthetic can invoke things in the viewer that a high res one can't. It's all on you as the developer to make the viewer want to play your game just from seeing it. Exactly. It's only the devs who are fellating themselves on making a retro game that want it to be 240p. If you want to give the player that option that's fine but you should always have the expectation that the game is going to be preferred in whatever native res the user has and your marketing materials should be at least 1080p. This when it comes to 3d games of course. Pixel perfect 2d games are an exception.

I iterate through references and concept art before then, but never put anything in the game until very late when I really need to. You can get pretty far with solid colors and lighting to get an idea of the final look.

-a rocky norther beach (complete with tidal mechanics!)

-a hive of zombified bees, termites, and ants working together
-the motherfucking moon

I'm brand new to game making, but I've been doing software development for real-time systems for non-fun companies for about 15 years. I think that's given me an advantage where I'm coming into things already understanding how to design things and can put up with the grind work. I'm probably in trouble when it'll come time to make artwork though. directing things/leading a team can be rewarding but you spend way more time babysitting and putting up with bullshit than you do getting an vision or direction accomplished.

I'm also a software engineer by trade. There's a metric fuckton of domain-specific knowledge when it comes to modern gamedev. You don't even know what you don't know yet, and it's definitely not just "art". The best thing to do is to jump in make small games. Make them as end-to-end products so that random people can actually play and enjoy it. That includes a nice store page, title screen, pause menu with settings, tutorials, saving/loading, VFX, SFX, music, etc etc.

Hey Anonymous, I am trying to figure out a way to do proper collision sweeps for a melee weapon that will still register a hit if the weapon passes through an enemy entirely between frames.
I listened to some Unreal developer's talk on youtube and it sounds like they pre-compute each attack animation and the resulting transforms of the weapon. They sample along the animation at n time intervals and save the transform at each sample in some kind of resource, then they reference that at run-time to test for collision when the weapon swings.

Do you know of a way to get the transforms of a bone in an animation at a given time in godot?
Am I barking up the wrong tree? Is there a better way?
