Eggman shows up in a giant new Death Egg. Why? Who cares. He's attacking a city that looks exactly like Station Square but we're not allowed to call it that.

Sonic arrives. He's not worried. He cracks a one-liner about bald jokes. Tails, Amy, and Knuckles are there on a video call from a base that is definitely not the Restoration because that's IDW fanfiction. They can't help. Their only job is to be Sonic's cheerleaders.

Tails: "Wow Sonic, according to my calculations, you're running at a very high velocity!" He's a super genius you see, but he can't build a plane or a weapon that works. That would be useful.

Amy: "You can do it, Sonic!"

Knuckles is also there.

The plot is Sonic running through seven zones. Green Hill, Chemical Plant, City, Desert, Water, Casino, and a Space level. Eggman's plan is to absorb the planet's energy with seven MacGuffins. Sonic has to run to each MacGuffin and turn it off. That's it. There is no story between these points.

Sonic never struggles. He never gets hurt in a cutscene. He never shows any emotion other than "confident" and "snarky." He is an ideal, but the corporate, safe, focus-tested ideal. He's not the wind, he's a gentle, predictable breeze.

For the final boss, Sonic finds all seven Chaos Emeralds off-screen. He goes Super Sonic and beats the final boss in one hit. Eggman yells "I hate that hedgehog!" and flies away.

Sonic gives a thumbs up to the camera. The friends cheer. Credits. The end. That's the game SEGA wants to make. A story so utterly safe and sterile it fails in its mere conception.
