I find it incredibly funny that the brief wave of outer worlds 2 redditors viscerally hate this teh assassin of d00m tumblr throwback girl when she's the only character obsidian wrote with a reason to be so le quirky. In any other game this would be insufferable, but on the curve of this writing an extended "lol so random, boy I sure do love killing" schtick is a breath of fresh air in a game that is 70% girlboss killers they demand you take seriously.

It is pretty fucked at a mechanical and systems level independent of being more cringe.

most guns and every unique/smart weapon are just not viable even on normal. Weapon dispersion is also so bad you won't even see a SMG or assault rifle until the late 2nd or 3rd planet. A machinegun you can get minutes after the (hour long) tutorial by climbing a roof is the one copy of the highest damage output gun you'll find all game other than the same gun but legendary being carried by the first worlds boss. It does more damage than any weapon you'll ever find for your build because there is one [gun] stat that increases damage for every single type of firearm in the whole game, assuring most weapons are just flat worse and can't be improved to match something you don't want to use but have to Stealth is in the bad place of fake reactivity, enemies instantly knowing they're being attacked even with silencers and the noise reduction perk when like 2 of their 7 die outside of visual range. Companions also run the 90 yards between you and the guys you're sniping at random just to die instantly because armor is likely bugged

companion damage is like 50dps as you fight enemies like hammer guys, mechs and named characters with 2000-5000 health and super armor. They also are downed instantly regardless of investment

the damage mitigation and armor system is just broken, no matter what you wear it's ~4-6 shots and you're dead on normal from most things as you double jump and try to put a collision box between you and the enemy. AI sucks so they don't shoot you often/use slow firing trash guns(in your hands) as a hedge but there is also no corner lean or cover system so you have to stand in the open.

I'm not froganon, but it's just a hodgepodge. Quest design is linear, checks and using skills to discover things don't actually change outcomes, just the dialogue you see in the next immediate dialogue. Lockpicking pretty much is just loot doors because they don't actually want you to sequence skip.

There is also a pretty big problem with sequence breaking

They're also being pogrom'd by their evil government so shooting all of them doesn't matter. Quite convenient for the writers after a possibly hasty rework to not be able to join the space enclave. You don't make actual decisions, the game just goes forward.

macabre curiosity mostly, but it can't be understated how bad the writing is. The entire games diction is in 3 faction specific flavors of the "big words" trope and so are the journal entries. The two DLCs of the first game actually improved a little bit but clearly that was their B team who free of oversight making DoA dlc for a EGS exclusive wrote scenario based humor with dialogue spoken like actual humans. The A team would never stoop so low.

I like these indie text games like suzerain or disco elysium, but they tend to be overly conservative just releasing DLC or enhanced editions instead of a new project. honestly what all these writers making passion projects need is to be attached to real game studios, instead of where they just hire the most attractive women or throw darts for their 'video game writer' with less skill than porn writers

But to pull together a small list of positives for OW2
>Insulate yourself from the cringe, the plot is arc is serviceable as a straight line about stopping a direct existential threat (likely a reaction to the critique the first game is about nothing) related to the badguy faction and your starting antagonist
>there are moments of enjoyable looter shooting as a game loop when you get together decent guns (shock rifle, first boss machinegun, sniper rifle, marksman rifle, revolver/legendary as the shortlist) that have good damage and time to kill
>Aza has a good voiceactress and her one note safe edgy gimmick
>Tristan is a caricature but decent enough to have around
They're pretty much Ellie and Max of the first game with similar arcs of bookending a past life and growing jaded with their belief system. Still serviceable like last time, still the only not bad companions.

By shills "it's longer" is one of their talking points. It really isn't, the planets are just almost empty. There is a lot of padding for how little there is to each planet. I clock I think ~27 hours doing moderately thorough runs of the first game. This one has what feels like less but takes upwards of 40 hours. Everything is so interconnected and the maps so small a completionist run wouldn't be much longer; enemies don't respawn (XP snowball prevention by shit devs) so if you do miss a quest you'll just be doing it with 0 opposition unless you didn't discover the area it takes you.

RPGS seem like black magic to PUBLISHERS since they cant just throw money at it and get reliable returns like sports, call of duty, WoW, final fantasy XXX, GTA. The market has wised up to passion projects like amalur reckoning and fund assembly line ENTERTAINMENT products like cape movie and shoot game. There's still oblivious financers that bought into scam citizen this or last year, the guys that loaned CD Projket money scratching their head why polish GTA didnt print.
Its actually not black magic and you need a WRITER coupled with a LEAD PROGRAMMGER to make a bug free controlled scope product. I've seen several indie games like Vagrus, Suzerain, Disco Elysium (yes this was indie before being popular) with more than serviceable writers but they cant get matched with the money and developers. Instead writer is a sort of DEI spot like HR or the hot lady that is the bosses assistant (ever seen a fat black man as an assistant?) and all the skilled developers work on assassin's creed 12 and the like for steady paychecks. Decline induced by mismatch.

Cleric. You want the spell list and battle is the strongest.

Arcane spellcaster. Wizard and sorc are both good (Shock arcanist may be the best)

For melee, barb or paladin. Timar Paladin was homebrewed to be good at everything you face.

For the last spot, it's Ranger or Bard with scoundrel background. Better than a rogue could ever hope.
Ranger is good at melee and bow and makes free rations, Bard has good support and spell list, particlarly lore.

Awakening companions felt..raw, incredible raw, specially how Vellana acts like a discount morrigan with child-like behaviour, Howe and Anders were alright, and Oghren almost had something going, but they didn't give him a proper questline. Everyone was forgettable as fuck

40k obviously. That's the setting which lends itself really well to gameplay with tons of cool tech, space magic, enemies, equipment, places and all other stuff space opera needs. And it's an IP easy to get since GW doesn't give a fuck about vidya and so hands it over to whoever asks

Expanse is intentionally shit and boring setting. It's very gimmick is that it's so grounded and mundane there is no that idealized space opera stuff in it. Mankind even failed to properly colonize solar system, can't leave it, can't even terraform planets, armor, tech and locations look samey and generic because anything more cool would be too fantastical. No melee combat and jedi powers or ayys everywhere either
It's not inherently wrong on it's own but it's a fucking terrible setting for a game. It was designed to tell a particular story and not with gameplay in mind. And this game story will HAVE to orbit that original story and be wary to not intrude on it and actual protagonists from that show/book. Won't let you make any actual choices that would shape the world since that wouldn't fit with tv show.
I expect it to be like that Lotr jrpg game at best where you have notGimili, notAragorn and notLegolas which follow in Fellowship footsteps, but can't ever actually reach them or do anything distinct, but they were totally important in stopping Sauron. Or like Telltale Games of Thrones

Those two games should just be reversed. Expanse should be crpg very, very focused on a story and dialogue like disco, because there is fucking nothing else in it. Also make it completely non canon to the show/books and with playable book protagonists so you can actually make some decisions. And not the way they make it

Their 40k game should be an action rpg with AAA values, combat and explosions everywhere and other stuff like this. This is what 40k was designed around. Rogue Trader in particular would work great as a Mass Effect clone.

Well the bladedancer/executioner has received nerfs. It's not as much of an I Win button as it used to be. Carnival of Misery doesn't work as it used to. Still pretty powerful.

Nah. Outliers like BD/Exe were nerfed, but origin rework made the other origins OP, priest is especially cancer now. And also new strong items you can get so Ulfar and Yrliet are much stronger. XP is scaled back so early game balance isn't messed up, no more dighting Aurora with 2nd archetype, but game still becomes easy after mid act 2.

Some things were balanced and other things are more unfair than before.
Blade dancer was nerfed pretty hard. It's still strong but you can't just turn your brain off and slaughter the entire encounter.
Naval officer is an absolute monster now thoughever. Abelard is unironically stronger than he was before.
Importantly, astrum militarum commander and commissar got rebalanced and are actually solid and fun to play as a variety of classes. Not as strong as naval officer, but strong. Priest got some buffs too.
Act1 balance is a tough prospect because the game has to be playable by people without void shadows to bloat their levels. However if you're not prepared in act2 those certain footfall encounters can still shit on you.

The early game is rough, yes, but you're not completely useless. Living Deity can get a pet at level 1 with Nature Mystery and Time Manipulator can completely refresh their spell slots once per rest at level 4. Plus you can make some pretty nasty spell combos early, like Sleep+Color Spray for an AoE color spray, enemies in the early levels have fairly low HD so you Color Spray is a pretty stacked spell. At level 4 you get Haunting Mists, which lets you cheese any hard fight in the chapter because the duration is infinity, doesn't trigger hostilities and the WIS drain will eventually kill anything. The horse physically slamming into guys his training says would scatter (and crushing them) even without injury still would still burn through the animal's use as a warhorse. We have pretty thorough records of what and how horses were trained and how long they lasted from the medieval era.

In the renaissance lancers still would have proper war horses, reiters not so much (one of the many reasons why they were cheaper and more common). By the ECW and 30 years war you can assume most cavalry would be on riding horses and wouldn't be able to charge down pike blocks even if they'd wanted to. I haven't looked deep into what training a military horse would truly get in the early modern period but you'd assume it'd mainly be to disassociate the noise of gunfire from danger. Bottom line though is a horse isn't going to reel up and attack draugr's like in skyrim it's going to get the fuck out of there unless explicitly trained otherwise.

Lord of Nothing adds a few nice classes, continues the story from Through the Ashes, and has an android companion for its story (you can't get the andoid in the main game though)
Masks is nice, adds a few classes again, you get to fight some enemies that aren't just demons, get to visit Kenabres again, it has more companion things, and even adds a new romance event for whoever you romanced. It's sweet
I'd recommend Masks at least. Get Lord of Nothing if the classes it adds appeal to you or you want to continue the story of Through the Ashes

Lord of Nothing is pretty good, it's a continuation of the story from From the Ashes, unlike the first part though, this is much more similar to the normal WOTR gameplay with a lot less emphasis on survival. It also adds a very cool boss fight for the main campaign.

Dance of Masks is ok, it's pretty short and sweet. The new archetypes added are very nice and super unique. The made a big deal about it being fully voiced, but imo this was more of a detriment than anything since the quality of the voice acting is noticeably inferior compared to the rest of the game, it felt like a very rushed thing, there are even a couple of instances where the voice actors made a mistake while reading their lines and had to make another take and they didn't even bother to cut it properly.

I would second Shadowrun: Hong Kong if you want dialog-heavy. A fair number of checks that relate to skills, but nothing on the scale of DE of course. It's 10 years old. But approach it as a story to read and it's good. After missions you can catch up with people and affect to a degree what happens with them over time.
