Sorry but I’m beginning to think my biggest fear about the series, that they discover they’re in a simulation or a video game, ends up being true.

I have taken a personal interest in RPGs for my whole gaming life and I think this is the dumbest thing you can do in such games since the Star Ocean scandal (how I call it). I’m not going to rant about that, but for a start it’s redundant and cartoonish.

This post has Kai spoilers and shouldn’t be read by those who want to avoid them.

I struggle to grasp the Kai ending because my impression was that Agnes rewinds time to some point before she met Van (the T-Phones and bunker are disappearing!) at the expense of her own existence, but on the net I frequently read that she makes a snapshot (like a RAM save) of current space-time and has the Sept-Terrion rewind just to that state, and usually it would not rewind time but restore the S.0 snapshot from a database (a Grand Archive seems to exist).

If that is true and there are snapshots it’s a bad hint at the simulation theory being true, together with the limited world, the weird Astral/Celestial Code, the experiment, and the Grandmaster’s ability to circumvent Aidios’ laws. Another hint is the non-aging Campanella breaking the fourth wall and addressing the player after the Celestial Globe was revealed.

In that scenario Aidios is probably some kind of AI running the shitshow and the Grandmaster is somehow tied to her. Either she’s an enemy (like Neo breaking the Matrix) or the real Aidios or some kind of angel, given the deleted text about the Aureole coming from her.

As I previously said if our reality is a simulation I don’t care because it changes nothing for me: Like God, I am what I am. However imagine how pathetic it would be if Estelle and Joshua and even KeA realize that all their feelings, struggles and their suffering were a lie just to entertain the ab rat’s audience.
But I think time rewinds DO happen. Why are the phones disappearing?

Most bizarre revelation of Kai is not the daft time travel shit but that people who speak an unknown language can appear from the Beyond, and for whatever reason it happens every 1200 years and it's always a child.

If this isn't some esoteric stunt pulled by Aidios for example then I'd like to know who's behind that stupid shit. If time in Zemuria doesn't run faster, almost 24.000 years have passed beyond the barrier. Surely they grew tired of their rituals at some point.

I also expect that McBurn will be in the last game because he was frequently mentioned and even depicted. Ouroboros probably plans to take the Chest for their own ends (the snake biting its own tail), just like the Grandmaster also needed the Aureole. (Note: Spacetime.) The new Aion is meant to allow McBurn an assult on the Sept-Terrion (the evil mecha is clearly demonic in nature). It's also possible that the large shield in Ouroboros' emblem is a reference to space (which is often depicted as a plane).

Furthermore, given that the Church has access to knowledge which should only be found in the Grand Archive, it is quite possible they are successors to some cult which originally started the loops. They could have been punks who begun to worship the Sept-Terrions as salvation after people started nuking each other. They made sure that after the first Reset there was going to be a group that would collect the artifacts (hide the truth) and tell people to venerate the Goddess. This is like the silly Wall Church in Attack on Titan.

That's why Ouroboros and the Church are enemies; the Grandmaster is a heretic who left the cult and intends to break its stranglehold. It should be noted that Ouroboros is prone to rituals and esoteric symbolism.

At least it's now clear where the weird tribal group of time is. There's always a family or tribe associated with the Sept-Terrion and it's the Claudel bloodline.

There's no way that Epstein adopts a random girl, just wildly guesses that she will have kids and then bind the only thing that can save the world to that specific DNA.

So, completely obviously, her DNA is accepted by the Sept-Terrion as the administrator. There is another bizarre AoT parallel, which is that her mom and grandma died early, so there's something wrong with her DNA and time.

The blond hair of Grendel Shaddai and of Grendel Shin could be a link, ie the ancient tribe used to have blond hair and the genuine unlocked Grendels hence have that hair color too because they were their armor suits. The Grendels are also capable of time manipulation: Van freezes the present to prevent getting a fatal hit, Zolga can bring back the past and Shaddai can summon copies from the future.

This is fitting because Shaddai is used to liberate the future, and Zolga is a tool of someone from the past. However, Zolga seems to be artificial.

A more difficult problem is that Van starts speaking a different language when he unlocks his new Grendel transformations which is English in the Japanese dub. Nina also spoke a different language when she entered Zemuria. If there is a link (these fragile chains guide me to this realm) it means that the Grendel is either from whatever is going on in the Beyond, or that Van has a similar origin as Nina and starts talking in his old language.

I loved all three so much and each of them were well written overall even if story wise it was lacking in parts.
What makes a good game in JRPG is a combination of great story and gameplay.
The best writing overall is from Trails to Azure though. It's the best paced story in the series... until the finale, which was a shame.
Trails of Cold Steel is a deeply flawed series but gameplay was solid throughout the series. The main problem is the story in the arc, it was poorly written, felt like it was for preteens, trope filled nonsense, harem nonsense, etc. It felt like Falcom tried to copy Persona too much and not have their own identify.
I'll post more thoughts and opinions on the series later when I've had my morning coffee.

Just finished the Sky remake the other day. It was good, though with all the cutscene animations, dialogues felt a bit slow compared to what I remembered. The new combat system is great though

Van is made to experience one of Campanella’s illusions via his demonic core, and the point of that is to access the Sept-Terrion of Time which exists in an alternate plane similar to Phantasma.

This is also the reason why some words are obscured. Van would wake up if he knew (and Grendel Shin is the key back) but he is on a very low level aware of it which is mirrored in the references to the lie.

The world is currently not cyclic, but the Grandmaster wants to achieve exactly that (which is why Ouroboros is the name and icon of her group) and needs the Sept-Terrions of Time and Space for that end.

There is no other reason why one treasure would dominate her organization that much, given that the Grandmaster has the power to beat Sept-Terrions.

The point of creating the loop is the save the souls of all (Orpheus) from the future Risette is from.

It's also possible that Kuro/Kai exists entirely in Märchen Garten, because Van has suggested the depths of it provide an hint to Mare's origin. And that is totally not that she's Yume from a previous loop.
