I'm doing my first playthrough of oblivion and I'm in the middle of the battle for castle kvatch quest where you help the city guard captain get to count gold-something's chambers.

Well I got to his chambers but then I realized that the captain of the guard is still out in the courtyard along with all his men. Only a band of imperial soldiers are actually following me.

How do I get this guy to follow me to progress the quest? It was a little janky in the beginning because he was aggro'd on the dramora on the castle walls and wouldn't talk to me to tell me to get the gatehouse key, so I tcl-ed through the gate and took the route backwards and unlocked the door to the chapel with console commands (I didnt know it started in the chapel) When I came back out he was then willing to tell me to get the key, so I got it and went back through the tunnel and opened the gate. Stuff seemed to progress normally from there as he and the other city guard were helping fight the scamps in the courtyard. But after I went into the castle they didnt follow me in and when I came back out they are all standing by the portcullis and he is just giving me the dialog about "this is no time to be patting each other on the back, theres still a lot of work to do" that ends with you saying either "yes I'm ready"/"no not ready yet" (to continue into the castle). I say yes I'm ready and he laughs and says I knew I could count on you and then stands there without moving.

Also does oblivion *need* a mod for engine fixes/bug patches, etc? I want my first playthrough to be as true to the game as possible so I started out with just the 4 GB patch but I'm wondering if I need the oblivion version of skse and basic bugfixes and engine patches, etc?

The proper order of the quest should go:
1) Fight with Savlian (captain) the the castle gate.
2) Savlian tells you to find the guy with the key to open the gate
3) Talk to the guy with the key in the chapel, then take the back route to open the gate (this is when the imperial guard show up and start following you)
4) Open the gate and clear the courtyard with Savlian
5) Clear the throne room with Savlian
6) Savlian stays in the throneroom and tells you to look for the count.

Sounds like you skipped step 3 and broke the quest. I'd just reload a save. You can click on an npc and type "stopcombat" to get them to talk to you. If they insta aggro again then click on them, move far away from the enemy, type "moveto player" to pull them over to you, THEN type "stopcombat".

You're going to have some copypasta for any open world. The issue with Skyrim is that they copy and paste the major, main questline dungeons, making them feel almost exactly like the minor dungeons you come across.

Elden Ring was actually worse than Skyrim when it came to copy pasting dungeons, but they were all minor hole-in-the-ground that could be completed in 5-10 minutes. The major dungeons were all had a unique feel or gimick. So too was the case of BotW, where the minor dungeons were ALL the same, while the major shit was still unique.

New Vegas's dungeons were far worse than Skyrim's, but the writing added enough flair to locations that it always felt new and memorable despite the sameness of the visuals/layouts (not to mention that dungeon diving was a much smaller component of NV). Witcher goes for the same angle with its dungeons (there's not a single good dungeon in Witcher, but it's carried by the writing and companions, and there aren't that many mandatory dungeons). The writing for Bethesda dungeons is terrible in comparison. While Bethesda's environmental storytelling is top-notch, the stories those environments are telling are extremely boring, unlike NV.

Enderal and Tainted Grail were the only TES scale open world game I could think of where every dungeon felt unique, but they were going for quality over quantity.

Because of a very popular thread on /v/ last night, i decided to get every achievement in Skyrim. Because I am autistic and nothing else is coming out. I also have plenty of mods I'd like to play around with.
So there's a lot of achievements to get and I was thinking about using one character to get them all because one achievement requires you to reach level 50. I don't think that's possible if I spread the load across different characters unless I cheese it.
