Last spurt mechanic is when your uma goes full speed into the last spurt part of the track.
Let's say that the last spurt part of the track starts when there are 1000m left.
Once your uma gets to that point, she will start accelerating until max speed. But if an acceleration skill was proc'd before the 1000m mark and finishes after the 1000m have been passed, she continues going into last spurt mode, so they are entering last spurt before they should. That's why skills like Red Shift or Let's Pump some Iron are used, to get into last spurt ASAP.
Your uma doesn't run at max speed at the start, so speed is not that important, your uma can only reach max speed at the last spurt section of the track.

The position of your uma depends on their WIT and acceleration/power. There are lots, like lots of WIT checks done during the race, if your uma pass the WIT check she moves forward and passes the horse in front of her, this can lead to your uma getting really ahead, even if her speed is low. They'll try to maintain a pretty specific distance that they consider a "comfortable lead". If there are multiple Fronts, they will also compete with one another for first place, which can extend that lead even further. Meanwhile the umas behind will also be trying to catch up past the Front's comfortable lead, so that'll push them forwards as well.

All of this is also partially controlled for by constant wit checks, basically the uma noticing something wrong with their position and adjusting their speed to move towards fixing it. If they don't notice, they don't fix, for better or for worse.

You could calculate for that specific distance, but (a) there's so much chaos and RNG in the mix, from wit checks to blocking to skill use, that it's senseless thinking that you just build for that specific gap and "just win"... and (b) this all only governs the first 50% of the race, at which point "position keep" ends.

From that point until the 2/3 mark, everyone's running at their mid-race speed, but strategies are no longer respected by anyone. Any ground you make up, lose, take, now doesn't get compensated for by Fronts trying to stay in front, or Pacers purposely slowing down to avoid passing them, or any other such "position keeping".

By that point, the specific distance becomes pretty meaningless. But figure it's always been in that 5-10m range up until now. That's 2-4 lengths, but I'm sure you've seen umas take an even bigger lead than that. It happens.
