Why are items in this game so fucking punishing? You get hit by one item in 1st and suddenly you're 12th. You'd think if they were going to make them so damn strong they'd counter-balance it by making defensive items (Shield, Tornado, Void Wisp) more frequent but I swear I never see these. All I ever seem to pull in high positions are single boost wisps and green gloves.

The issue there is that the angle you throw/drop items behind you is different from the angle items come at you during corners, making it impossible to block while taking turns. All you have to do is wait for a turn before throwing your item and you will hit who you're aiming for 100% of the time.

Stats and subsequently character barely matter, vehicle type matters, gadgets matter a lot, but what's good where depends entirely on what they're paired with, the game mode, and the speed selected. Online biases toward item mitigation, so your "top tiers" are silver surfer, or power vehicle+slipstream
