Yes, actually. For the mystery to function, the characters on the island have to be male, and you couldn't really change that without completely rewriting it down to the basic premise. You can't really get into why without massive spoilers, though.

The reason they all go to the island is for the 3rd anniversary of Ooe Ann's death. It's revealed a bit into the game that her autopsy revealed she'd secretly had an abortion, and the characters speculate that might have been related to her suicide, or it might even have not been a suicide and the father killed her and made it look like a suicide. It's even later revealed that everyone on the island has a connection to Ooe Ann in some way, and the reason they were summoned there is so the mastermind can try to figure out which one of them is the dad.

A similar thought is put forward during Looking-glass Insects, where one of the characters describes the Specialized Physics Bug. The funny thing is that the whole idea is expressly a delusion of a traumatized girl, who desperately seeks a way to explain her suffering without losing hope in humanity. Turns out that Ryukishi07's morality is that of a teenager.

I think I reached my limits with nukige...it kinda made me upset...I just read them now because I know at some point I will be forced to do so, and now is a good time…my main focus is to finish my book, but I don't feel like it…I wished the otomeshit could be the ge I use for this type of time, but it is boring…nukige also failed, it always makes me feel bad when am +3 hours in and see myself barely reading them, and most of the time during my reading session, I would be doing something else..why does it matter this much? Because when I start reading nukige, I need to do certain things that impair my freedom, I talked before about my OCD…when the nukige fails to make me focus on them? And with my locked movement? It just turns into hell…early this year, I was reading like 5 eroge and 1 nukige, I was reaching the h-scene in each one of them and then read them in one session, the nukige was there just in case they were not enough... but to only read nukige? There were some parts that did read a bit awkwardly, but I've read games with truly bad translations that were literal ESL garbage and this one didn't strike me that way. Also, it's been a while since I read it, but I seem to recall it smoothing out as the game went on, so I think it was more an issue of the translator just being inexperienced.
