After a year in service, Frens of Akalabeth has wiped and relaunched with the latest UO Odyssey fork: Memento, which is a fork of Adventurers of Akalabeth, which is a fork of Ruins & Riches. This fork brings a bit more streamlined, but also more challenging experience as the power creep in the other forks got out of hand. Notably resists are harder to come by, items have less magical attributes, and skill bonuses from items now obey the 100 skill cap unless you use a powerscroll. Other notable changes include the addition of OmniAI which makes for more exciting combat, gathering and crafting skills don't count toward the total skill cap (with 1 exception on this server), and a de-emphasis on macroing by adding more natural skill progression and bulk crafting/continuous harvesting system with rich deposits that randomly spawn in the world. The following are my changes for this server:

>Trail Map system reworked. Can now be used at 50 Tracking/Cartography or 80 Camping with a success chance that starts at 50% and scales to 100% at 100 for the former and 125 for the latter. Can't use them to travel to a different land (ie Sosaria to Lodoria), but Cartographers can craft them to (almost) any outdoor location by going there and crafting one.

If you're unfamiliar with Odyssey, here's a great summary by an anon from the first server:

There's a lot of funny builds you can try out, depending on your character origin you can also get higher skill caps to expand possibilities

I was looking over the hunger/thirst system while thinking about how to make cooking more valuable and I realized it's kind of retarded. When your hunger or thirst are at 0 you take a little hp/stam/mana damage every time there's a hunger/thirst check (5 minutes by default), which is then quickly regenerated. The only real detriment I can see is you can't use bandages. It's actually beneficial if you're skilling up focus and meditation, so despite the messaging you are not actually starving to death. I never noticed this while playing because I don't think I ever let myself get to 0 hunger or thirst. So I'm thinking 0 hunger and/or 0 thirst disables health regen and 0 thirst disables mana regen. I'll leave stamina regen alone since that would just leave you stuck. This is in addition to the planned buffs for food for some positive reinforcement as well.
btw someone in the last thread said henchmen weren't in the game anymore. i see them for sale by the tavern and barkeepers

Server restarted so the merchant crates should be on a 4 hour timer (which resets whenever you add an item) and no longer accept raw resources. I also cleaned up the Town Crier's poor grammar in some shouts because it's always bugged me.
How do you auto-loot chests? I started using tazuo autoloot with corpses and it's really nice.
But it won't autoloot money in chests and when i double click the gold/silver it states "it needs to be in bank to be converted" or something like that, quite annoying.
Btw remove night vision from the game
In akalabeth I never used the healing skill. I just ate apples and drank water to heal + potions. Was getting health from food not normal?

You have to use some macros with the razor program that opens up when playing. So you can use shortcuts to use items like a bladed weapon on an apple tree to get apples. Instead of having to click the blade over and over again if you want to use it a bunch of times. Also bind skills like hide to shortcuts.
Everything else is just exploring and a lot of running away from monsters.
Shopkeepers only accept gold, you can convert silver,copper and some other stuff at the bank into gold.
Revive at healers/shrines so you don't lose stats and there is a "find corpse" button in the help menu. [c for global chat

Also the comfy factor of seeing player houses and the amusement of seeing a bunch of the same player's corpse bones in a dungeon (they persist for a year).

The hardest thing is setting up macros to do more complicated things, but that isn't necessary. For example, you can use an assist program like razor or classicassist to bandage yourself by hotkey instead of double clicking the bandages in your pack and then targeting your health bar. Most of the time theres a macro in the macro list ready made for you. Sometimes you'll want to do something really specific multiple times, maybe AFK, and then you'll need to record/write a multi line script. 97% of the time you don't need to do that.

Another patch yesterday. Most of these patches have just been the commits on the Memento github. I'm also working on a dungeon invader system where whenever you're in a dungeon there's a chance for a red NPC to spawn and attack you. I have the functionality working, but ideally I want it to scale to the player that spawns it so they have a consistent difficulty regardless of the dungeon you're in. That part is gonna take some time.

We're so back. Had a few patches with a couple big changes since 4chan went down. See pic related since the board thinks it's spam for some reason.

I killed the ice queen and then ran all the way through jurassic park, just to get stuck on an island. I was fortunate to have found a trail map back towards the ice queen dungeon. Not sure if you are meant to find that trail map there? It really saved me from back tracking all that way, I ran out of my 80 bandages too in the end.

I had some home ideas.. a rare book collection. I made a big table for something, maybe display my rusty iron collection or maybe for a new collection of food items. Either way, it's fun to store crap.

What's wrong with sagas? It seems like a it has some cool features. Like the cooking and town buffs. I guess the ui sucks or is just like classic uo. The map art looks cool.
I don't care at all for pvp, it just seems awfully unfun in this game, but maybe i am wrong. I liked the rust-like games, dueling, dayz and other games where you can suffer. Although those games had a bit more skill to it than macro or apm bullshit.
When i read about these ultima forks it's always pvp'r and pve'rs complaining, so maybe it just bias.
I'll probably just play in this server again in a couple of weeks though.

Sagas turned out to be a shard that demonstrates that even though you can make a nice looking map, it doesn't mean you can make a good UO server. The server just gave hope to people that were tired of Outlands, and it failed to deliver. It is pretty much like other free shards out there, with some custom systems and a newer map, but not much else. It will probably linger in the likes of UO Forever, and that would be a high place for them to even reach. They have a very, very small group running it. They have barely any online presence. They force people to join their Discord to get links and information, artificially showing more Discord people than there are that give a shit. They didn't do any sort of testing, which is a must for a server introducing new mechanics and systems. I get that if you just start up a ServUO server, and make it public, it really doesn't need any beta testing. But something like this really needed it to happen better. To sum up, a server in the caliber of an Odyssey fork is much more polished and tested than this Saga mess. And Odyssey was made by one guy, where his testers were people on the ServUO forums back then.
