"MMO"s now are single player games with a bunch of other players walking around and nothing more. What's "massively multiplayer" about Warcraft, Elder Scrolls, Guild Wars, LOTRO, and SWTOR?

People play these games with such a staunch isolationists mindset every time I tried to invite people nearby to a party they refuse. People become such lardasses that they get angry if you help them kill the mobs. People play these games basically as a social media platform, they want to be in a world where another human being knows they're playing the game and that's it. You can't attack them, you'll rarely help them, and you'll rarely do anything with them that is not in a hyper-organized, segregated from the game world, role-based dungeon, where you can basically complete without even talking with your teammates.

EVE and Albion (which is an EVE clone) are actual MMOS that are massively multiplayer. Planetside 2 is an actual MMO. Foxhole is an actual MMO. Even Space Station 13/14 is more of an MMO.

LOTRO is now full of black dwarves, men and hobbits (soon black elves no doubt) and all the new content is horrible do not steal ESG shit. the game also continues to be a horribly optimized cash grab. Same with DDO, where the playerbase is in open revolt against the extremely predatory practices (just check the general forums right now). these games will be shut down in 2-3 years once all the whales keeping them afloat finally leave or die.

At 240k subscribing people, it’s probably more populated than every single MMO in the OP pic

WoW is the only relevant MMORPG. It has a large player base still, the PVP is good relative to the others of its genre, famous streamers still stream it.

I loved GW2 but it’s been dead since shortly after launch. No popular streams or IRL events. Never seen a tattoo from any MMO besides WoW and Destiny 2 which is an anecdotal indicator of popularity.

Even if you argue that something else is objectively better by some measurable metric, it doesn’t change the fact that the only MMORPG the masses somewhat recognize and give a single fuck about is WoW.

Guild Wars 2 progression, open world design and monetization are best in class, but boy it doesn't excuse the dogshit story.

Started playing RuneScape last year and i honestly don't understand the hate.

The game gets massive updates to this day, recently broke the player record and is about to overtake WoW as the best MMORPG of all time.

The coping about "muh nostalgia" is ridiculous. The game gets plenty of new players, even WoW friends are switching over. Nostalgia cope applies more to WoW than any other MMO on this tierlist.

The only thing that made WOW enjoyable was the fact the leveling took a while if you're a newbro and was actually social, finding people to do elite quests and leveling dungeons, trading for gear, ect. Once the game was streamlined to push you into end game, and the end game was streamlined so you never actually had to work as a team until some arbitrary hard mode

You can never actually talk to a WOWfag about how shit their game is because they refuse to understand how cucked they are, they're legit paying $60+15 a month so they can run the same 10, 15 minute long dungeons ad nauseam for 2 years, with their gameplay kneecapped by daily and weekly timegates.
