It's true for most servers on both games but they both also have smaller servers where that isn't the case. The thing is, SS14 is developed and run by rabid trannies while BYOND (the engine SS13 runs on) is developed by a single apolitical guy.
So any wrongthink gets a SS14 server kicked out of the hub and central auth system so those servers will have to set up their own from scratch if they want to keep going which is costly and time-consuming, although I've heard that several de-hubbed and de-authed servers were working together to make their own alternate auth system.
Meanwhile all that matters for SS13 is that the hub entry for the server doesn't have any explicit slurs in it, I guess because Lummox doesn't want that on the BYOND website, other than that you can host a server with whatever you want on it and the most trannies can do is ban anyone who played on chud servers from their own.

As the other posters said, /vg/station doesn't ban you for not sucking the girldick, there's also a kiwifarms server and I think at some point there was a sharty server. There's also some niche servers like Lifeweb but those are harder to find or get in to. You could also always take your chance on any lowpop hub server that probably doesn't have admins on.

This is not to say that DDoS is justified. It's not. Just like violent rioting isn't justified. But outbursts like riots come from the unheard responding badly to an inflexible and injust system. DDoS is the same way.

The game has evolved into 2D vrchat for metacliques who become outraged if they die from an antag or anything unexpected happens.

very. Just for an example of things you will need to code to have a working ss13 remake, the list includes and is in no way limited to:

>actors acting upon other actors
>Inventories and definitions for each item that can and can't be picked up

Netcode is the only thing that will require some experimentation on my part. The rest of the stuff is a lot easier.

If I were you I would focus on making the actual server program that's supposed to run the main game on it first with the intent of having almost all of it server-side, then figure out what can/needs to be client-side and implement that after. Ideally you would probably be designing the server and client in conjunction. I don't have much experience with network coding though so don't take my advice as gospel.
BYOND has almost literally everything server-side which is one of the issues with the engine itself but it does make coding for it a lot simpler and makes some cheating/hacking methods impossible (but it does cause a lot of lag). IIRC this is part of the reason why most SS14 codebases have no player collision, because the sane thing to do computationally would be handle it client-side for each individual player, but then that means cheaters could just hack their client to not register player collision, letting them walk through other players. SS13 doesn't have this problem because checking for player collisions server-side on a tile grid-based system is a non-issue.

Lifeweb already solved this problem. Griefing is a food chain. People higher up on the food chain have more to lose if they fuck up, so they're incentivized to keep the order at least within their group.

There are lapses in the DDOS. The BYOND website and the hub was up for several hours a couple days ago around 11pm EST and the other breaks in the DDOS happened around nighttime in the US so I would just check BYOND around that time every day to see if it's been let off.
The attacks themselves probably aren't going to stop for some time though because it doesn't cost much to take down a small service like BYOND. My bet is that it will last for another few weeks at the minimum.

I genuinely was considering making an SS14 server and learned the codebase, but seeing people get banned in the Discord for asking dumb questions when trying to get started and then seeing the head SS14 dev secretly recording people made me back out.

Almost every server has a 'tg hotkeys' option in the drop downs at the top of the screen or somewhere. Just learn those and it's pretty much universal.

To give you an idea of how gutted SS14 is I have something that is entirely rules-based. I use to play aliens just to form a mafia incase a mob formed just to kill aliens or the AI became AMISOV. You can't do that in SS14 because speciesism is banned, so there is no point to have a mafia. The game is extremely restrictive even when you ignore the fact half the mechanics are missing.

There are several types of custom servers from the ones that are just slightly modifying base code, through ones that try to get as close to 13 as possible up to conversions or even total conversions (like frontier, trieste, hullrot, fallout, and new one that is based around fantasy theme, plus ofc marines).

I didn't deny there were forks. My point was it doesn't take much for the devs reach for the nuclear option. There was an attempt to port vgstation to SS14 and it was dehubbed before their first game night. Most of those forks you mentioned are either minigames or reskins of the base game.

De-hubing and de-auth are two different things, second one is considered nuclear option since players wont be get checked against the auth server so you have to allow guests in, you loosing the main premise of (pseudo)safety. First one may cripple your growth, but that depends how you getting your main playerbase anyway.

I know the codebase pretty well and I am not happy with the way upstream SS14 is going so I'm in a similar boat. They are just outwardly incredibly controlling and paranoid. I think they genuinely do receive some harassment, but they reach for that word to describe what seems like basically any and all criticism. I don't think they should have the ability to de-hub servers just because they don't like them. Ideally, the SS14 launcher should baseline operate with BYOND rules like don't put insane shit in the name of your server. Also, don't do weird drama shit like fucking with people (doing shit outside of the game) and you'd be fine. I think certain things should be removed since they are immersion breaking and aren't conducive to RP. Seems like it's mostly just people roleplaying as their fursonas, which is a bit boring I think. If you're still somewhat interested in trying to make a fork, I'd want to talk to you more about it.

I think there is SOME value in making an effort to work on the image of SS13 going into 14 to try and bring in more players. People really undersell how much this shows the SS14 devs hand. They aren't interested in making a fun game but a place where they can swing their dick around. There's a server that regularly had +100 players even though it's invite only. It's the only case of a server that was blacklisted and still is huge even WITH gatekeeping. Admins don't enforce the rules Sec does. Sometimes Sec is corrupt. Instead of admins interrupting the round and making the players constantly worry about their presence, the players have to deal with a corrupt Sec. There are checks and balances so it isn't 1-sided, and if Sec is corrupt it actually makes them more vulnerable to rival powers.

You will never accomplish this level of RP with your mentality.

There's plenty, actually. For once the camera console can't work without TGUI. For second the GPS can't be as neat and responsive without TGUI. For third there's plenty of other stuff that could look much nicer and a robust React :tm: framework is needed for them.

Having, what, 4 different types of HTML interfaces (plain HTML/browser datums/NanoUI/TGUI) is pretty bad from an artistic standpoint. TGUI is the one with the most ressources. Although I would say that having a mix-and-match of techs and UIs does fit the NT decaying station aesthetic.

The thing is that this is only a surface level visual change. There is no game systems that are changed with ditching BYOND UI. The awkward menu searching and navigation is still in the game, the looks while doing it have just been updated. It is a cheap, easy, but substance-less way to add change to this game that I feel like we should try to avoid. Its like remodeling or redecorating a house to look nicer instead of adding a new wing to it or building a shed in the backyard. Adding new sprites, clothes, items, and maps doesn't actually change the game as much as the recent fire additions we got here on /vg/ recently, or the ship to ship combat element that NSV adds, or the well planned (TG could learn from them) multi-z spaces baystation has, or the insane revisions the novelty servers themed after half-life, stalker, fallout, and colonial marines go through. Better graphics are nice (as well as debatable) but Id much rather have effort focused on giving me more interconnected game systems to roleplay with then a gun or medkit resprite.

I am looking for a mapper or two for my low pop roguetown code project. The game takes place inside of a manor estate and involves thieves trying to steal treasures while avoiding getting caught by the guards or others. they have abilities such as disguises, smoke bombs, climbing ropes, etc.
The game is mostly ready for testing code wise, but my previous mapper burned out with the map in about a 50% completed state. I am a decent coder but I'm terrible at map design, so I need someone who has at least some mapping knowledge to push it past the finish line. I'll give you details on what needs to be done and how the game works if this sounds interesting to you.

This won't be a huge mapping project like most roguetown code. The playable area will be the manor itself (which has ~5 floors) and a small forest around it.

The main problem with this is that the game is designed for chat ERPers and not as a video game, so everyone wants to get in the round as soon as possible and they hang out in deadchat when they are not alive.
By itself the antag would be fine. It could just be a role for someone who dies. You died and you can't play the game anymore, so here is an antag role that gives you stuff to do. It would work.
What makes it not work is that everyone in deadchat sees what you are doing and your existence reveals who the other antags are and fags will 100% abuse that knowledge.

As the game stands now the best and only antags that work are the kind of antags who don't reveal their existence until the round ends. Traitors are the best, no one will ever know you are a traitor until you make yourself known.
Having a guy on the mic going ''hey, antag commander here, changeling go absorb that guy and cult go set up a base in cargo'' would suck. It can't work in an ERPers bar chatroom game.

I had a sort of similar idea for a game mode ages ago.
One player would've been a Solid Snake like character, the other is an Otacon like character.
The Otacon character would hack into things remotely, buy better equipment, control drones, call in favors (activate sleeper agents/mid round antagonists, have bombs 'planted' (spawned) in remote areas.), ect.
The Snake character wouldn't have worked at all because there wasn't a single server that had vision cones back then.
I would imagine that most people who rolled the Otacon character would have probably just killed themselves.

People dont like being taken out of the round, dont like having any sort of obligation towards the game/other players.

I actually dont think ghost knoweldge is the main barrier to game design in ss13. Most people play along relatively well and the ones who dont get slapped by admins relatively easily. The main barrier imo is that any form of complex plan or coordination is almost impossible to achieve in game because no two rounds are similar.

The game is basically a set of players living in their own islands and the best thing you can do as a dev is to give them some tools to play in the sand with vague nudges towards cooperation and/or interactions.

It's a very difficult game to design for. Usually you want to design around a player story (e. g "I am a Botanist and I need some chemicals from Chemistry to make the epic plants for the chef") but players routinely refuse to play along those stories, or those stories end up being too complex to execute properly, or they're so basic and annoying people saw them a million times already.

The player stories that work the best are the ones where you respect player agency and which interact with other elements of the game e. g :

"I am a nuke ops who need to fight the crew to make the station explode"
"I am a greyshitter who is here to play cat and mouse with sec"
"I am a traitor who is here to ruin everyone's day"
"I am a bartender who wants to build a nice bar for a screencap"

IE vague objectives with as much tools as possible to get the desired result

You can still join directly from the /vg/station site even if the hub is down. The loading screen might give you the error message that normally would show if the server was down, but if you wait a minute or so it should still connect.

This thread had a server called boomerstation. It was all veterans. Everyone did their job perfectly. There was minimal fuckups, no grey shitters and no trolls. Antags cleanly did their objectives with minimal damage.

This is extra retarded because on tg forks as botanist it is pretty much mandatory to either steal the extra chem dispenser from medical or break into tool storage to get a chem board so you can build your own. If you don't do this you have to grow your own mutagen which takes at least 15-20 minutes based on RNG. Unless you want to constantly ask chem for mutagen, which will annoy the shit out of them and they will probably ignore you anyways. You also need to hack the seed dispenser to get access to all the seeds, which means insulated gloves or getting help from engy (good fucking luck). It's mandatory to circumvent the system, because no one ever wants to cooperate either out of selfishness or just incompetence.

The SS14 devs talked extensively about adding more shitty mechanics like this where the job is impossible to do unless you can get another person in another department to push a button for you, which is why I refuse to ever play that game.

Lifeweb did this but you couldn't as easily ignore people as you could in SS13. In Lifeweb the players would eventually just break in, kill you and replace you with someone who can do the job. The entire concept of the Lifeweb itself makes it so that the weak links get purged. On SS13 you would get banned for doing this unless it's vg.

Even if you were the gatekeeper and you killed migrants instead of letting them in, then they would harass you as ghosts and potentially kill you that way. Being a dick or incompetent always had a way to bite you in the ass that simply doesn't exist in SS13 or SS14.

Button pressing needs good timing. Admin needs to observe the current situation and figure out how many people are just going through the motions at that point. But it's meant to reinvigorate the round, not always bring it to an end, thus the best button presses are not very destructive on their own. It's a difficult skill to learn.

I would use l4z to mutate towards plants that had all the components for mutagen, and then grinded up into mutagen. It took too long. The server would always go to shit before I could get to the main plants I wanted.

For everything they cut that the players (rightfully) complain about the devs added 10 other things in its place. Even TG from 5 years ago has more content than VG in every regard.

Many antag tools are borderline worthless, many systems are annoying or overly restrictive for normal use, and grudge code is rife. It feels like there is substantially less player freedom compared to what TG code was nearly a decade go.
