Why was this such a fucking good game back then? I still fon't get it. My idea: fags who are the last in line of their brothers who only have one Playstation/Xbox and never got the change to play GTA (online) or one of the other PS3 games 2010..

infinite objectives/rewards so it's impossible to get bored. infinite motivations....
good writing. populated and social

still one of the best games. think they should port rs3 to VR, tile based movement and all

Best "sense of adventure" combined with a long grind to get to max level (making getting there in even a single skill an achievement), without making max level essential for most of the content. It was also created with a completely different design philosophy than what you see in your typical WoW clone, but that's harder to delineate.

back in the day you had more time to play, and RuneScape is a time demanding game
back in the day people chatted more in game, and RuneScape was a social game
as well as the other anons said. It's a different game, for a different time.

Runescape was always a shit game, but it was easier to gloss over because the novelty of a MMO was still present, especially since RS reached a lot more people with its always-F2P intro and not needing a big download to try or play.

Nowadays, there's a shitton of massively multiplayer games of many varieties to play, and so they're not inherently immersive anymore. They need their gameplay mechanics and structure to help draw you in, and RS doesn't really have that, so instead it's stripped bare and you look at what it offers as a video game, both solo and multiplayer, of which Runescape didn't really offer much for either.

1996 is earliest GenZ, right? I played that shit with my classmate while we chatted on Skype.
I liked that, but the grinding got boring eventually.

nah, used to be fun because of the social part. Now, in retrospective, the only thing that motivated me to grind through those games was to keep up with my friends to lvl up with them, and my online girlfriends (yeah this was a thing back then, they all were big horny sluts that loved to ERP).

I'm thinking of trying 09scape but I hate how it's 1x and 5x. I wish they were different servers.

I was playing it for a while before I got too busy and it's pretty chill, definitely plan on going back to it. People can see which account type you have and you'll get some extra respect for being on a grindier xp rate but most people are on 5x. I had three accounts at three different xp rates and found them all fun to play.

It's also worth mentioning that you can host your own 2009Scape instance with your own rules.

Are they going that far? I thought I read somewhere that they were stopping at 2007.

They're going up until 2012, but 2007+ updates will take longer to recreate since Jagex started adding a lot of encryption and obfuscation as an anti-botting feature in those years iirc
