1 - Priest: A healer's healer. Feel the most in-control when on this class.
2 - Valkyrie: Solid damage, amazing defensives for a DPS, very approachable rotation.
3 - Lancer: Ol' Reliable. Arguably the most party-focused tank. Has an answer for nearly every situation.
4 - Archer: Fast-paced but reasonable priority-based rotation. Needing to regularly burn one of its defensives for offense is a knock against it, but being able to freely move while charging is deceptively useful.
5 - Ninja: Few tools, but much nuance found within them. Ranged portion of its rotation almost certainly doesn't play well with some fights, however.
6 - Mystic: The riskier healing option. Without question the better pick for certain bosses (Bahaar especially).
7 - Berserker: Fairly straightforward, but effective. Slower/lengthier attacks are likely a liability in later fights, however.
8 - Warrior (DPS): Cool aesthetic, fairly smooth priority-based rotation, copious defensives when necessary. Would be higher, were it not for everything revolving around RNG Blade Draw procs.
9 - Slayer: Highly dynamic rotation makes every fight feel different. Not skilled enough to make it sing, but I can see why it has such a passionate userbase.
10 - Sorcerer: Apparently the strongest ranged DPS on Starscape, but its color-matching playstyle just ain't for me.
11 - Brawler: Easy to get into, impossible to master.
12 - Reaper: Stylish, but the ease of interrupting your attacks too early is pretty obnoxious (obviously a skill issue on my end).
13 - Gunner: Feels atrocious when not in burst. Constant self-knockback from certain abilities, inconsistent results from missile-related attacks, and just slow as sin to-boot. I regularly dread playing this for its dailies.

Gunner mains, come at me. Seriously, I must be missing something with this class.

Pardon me taking a bit to waive you in. Technically juggling three MMOs at the moment (whew boy...), so my attention is more than a little divided. Hopefully that'll settle-down in the coming weeks.

If you're brand-new to TERA (or just Starscape in general), I strongly suggest checking out the server-specific guides listed in the OP. Those will get you started on the right foot, especially if you plan to burn your Level Skip Scroll on any character.
This game throws at LOT at the player if you insta-skip to Level 70. Skills, Glyphs, Companions, about 12 different questchains which all look important, et cetera... It's easy to get overwhelmed by what actually matters, and what can be ignored or set aside for later.

Of course, should you want to level the old-fashioned way and experience all of the zones you'd otherwise completely skip-over, that's also quite fine. Just be aware that, like so many themepark-esque MMOs before it, much of this game's activity takes place upon reaching the level-cap.
There's no shame in wanting to take things slow, or speeding through to the "good parts" if you're feeling impatient. It's up to (You)!

Things have understandably been slowing down since the initial surge of interest for TERA at the end of April (see >>1729018 for the first thread despite it not being properly cataloged in the OP chain), but it seems like the previous thread saw a weirdly noticeable drop-off in activity towards its end.
Which is especially strange, seeing as the private server 'scene for this title is in a pretty great spot overall. Classic is thriving (relatively speaking), Arborea's team is adding new, well-developed content to a game otherwise thought to be a time-capsule, and Starscape is still chugging along as ever. Hell, there's even a new server for all the SEAs and Aussies in closed beta right now (although I can't recall its name off-hand).

There's arguably never been a better time to try out TERA, so to see the chatter suddenly shift into being so conspicuously quiet around here is just bizarre.

They're both on different patches.

Classic is on an older patch, not a true "classic" but closer than most private servers running.
Pre-apex.
Reaper is in, Gunner is in.
No Valk, no Brawler.
Current endgame revolves around VM4, or Generation. So, Bathysmal Rise and Sky Cruiser. PvP bis is Renegade I believe.
Avatar weapons were removed entirely but I think they're either working on or will be slowly bringing them back but have tuned it so they aren't as strong for leveling? Don't quote me on this.
Exp gain seems to be slowed pretty considerably but that might just be me.
Largely unmodified from the vanilla/retail experience for this patch at the time. From my understanding, devs for this are going to be working on balancing to restore other endgame pve content and bring it into the loop as well. I heard they're looking at bring

Starscape is on a newer patch; this patch includes apex, includes Valk and Brawler. Significant modifications to class tuning and balance, and I believe they're also working on totally new custom PvE content. Not sure that it's going to be at the extent that Menma's was at, but they are at least pushing development further than just trying to maintain a more retail experience.

In terms of popularity, Classic is currently the more popular of the two, seeing a big boom with streamers and their community (unfortunately.)
With Classic being pre-apex, the classes don't feel as fast as they got with apex release.

Classic is more pvp oriented based on the earliest avilable leak for tera, patch 30 something. Not true classic but it has alliance and nexus. No ping compensation so if you're not american you're fucked. Pve wise the patch is really stale, there have been 2 past classic servers based on the same patch so I'm personally very bored of it. Starscape isn't much better in that regard. 0 custom content on both of them.

What classic has going for it is the current huge streamer follower population which is cute and probably fun for pvp.

That's a combo of good server structure and routing. There's no ping compensation software like skill prediction or ping remover on the server. The main dev confirmed it himself because he says it ruins pvp. They should at least enable it in pve instances desu, working versions of skill prediction exist for that patch.

Yes, there isn't, because instead they're reworking the actual netcode to make the game less ping reliant in the first place which is a better approach than using some hacky plugin, you can tell even if your ping is a bit high on classic it doesn't feel how it would on another server.

The dev has said ping above 100 should feel below 100 because he's done some networking handling magic, and also moved some network checks to the client while still having them as authorized by the server, unlike skill prediction which just tries to send unverified packets to the server

The main aspect where I feel improvement is locking on, it's slightly better. Nothing compared to simulated 0 ping you get with skill prediction though, classic still feels like playing with rocks strapped to your feet. You could call me spoiled but after playing with sp since 2017 there's no way I'm going back to a place with over 100 ping and no proper way to mitigate it. At this point any private server dev should understand that some form of ping compensation is a must, therefore I'm glad something is being done about it. Wishing the dev good luck but so far my mind isn't blown.

I played on nova a bit and now classic. nova sucked, ping was terrible and it had a jew cash shop. classic has been a lot better, the dev guy really seems to care and he's not jewing us. the guy has a full time job but he skips work to fight of the ddosers. as far as player count I think this server hit 1200 today, really feels like old tera with how alive it is at all zones and there were even 2 CS games going the whole afternoon.

- If you want an old(er)-school experience with gradual-yet-satisfying progression, and one of the only servers with any sort of a PvP scene in [current year], go for TERA Classic. It's also the most-populated server overall at the moment by a considerable margin.
- If you want to see what TERA was like towards the end of its life, with all officially-developed classes available and a predominantly PvE focus, go for Starscape.
- If you want to see the latest in private server custom developments, and either live in the EU, UK, or potentially east coast of NA, go for Arborea.
- Wouldn't necessarily recommend Agaia in its current state, despite it still being listed in the OP (mostly included it for consistency's sake).
- Don't try Akeron or Nova, they have pretty sour reputations for good reason.

Who's to say how well it'll turn out, but since this title is quite ping reliant (albeit with some ways to mitigate those demands), I'd imagine the SEA population would be pretty keen on finally getting to play this game below 200ms, for once.

Starscape is a server I've certainly come to enjoy, but I'd be a fool to skip-out on seeing what all the fuss over Classic may-or-may-not be about, given its impressive surge in popularity. With how quickly I bowed-out from the original TERA during its prime, both v100 and v32 may as well be two new games for me to experience.
Lettuce see what I might've been missing, and whether it was worth all the hype. At least for a bit.

Will say, the version seen on Classic isn't actually the famed Isle of Dawn in its entirety. From memory, there were several parts cut compared to the original release (defending a bridge from very weak orcs, an entire sidequest area down the hill from the main hub which was outright stripped, some ruins you could climb on, etc, etc).
Still lovely seeing what's remained, at least.

Here's where things take a turn for the unusual.

Normally, I'd visit each zone somewhat methodically, taking plenty of photos all the while. But I happened to run into that rather strange-looking Hughmann from the Isle of Dawn, and together with a certain Lancer we later found, carved a path through the many, many forests surrounding Lumbertown with little time to stop and admire the lush scenery.
Ended up storming the infamous Bastion of Lok and came out the other side little worse for wear from it.

One thing I genuinely misremembered from Ye Olden Days of this title, was

S L O W the speed of combat is. At least when starting out. Incredibly lengthy animation locks on damn-near everything coats this title with a far more measured pace of play, compared to the lightning-fast stylings of v100 servers.
It's not a /bad/ feeling, per-say, just different. Very different. v32 truly does feel like an MMO from a much older era, when you're still rolling through the early goings.

A few more rounds of the Bastion of Lok (plus a quick dip into the Auction House to grab a noticeably better Staff on-the-cheap) put me well ahead of where the MSQ was expecting me to be. Leveling via Dungeons seems to be the way to go on this server, versus slow-rolling through sidequests.
And yes, the default Cloth Armor outfits really /are/ this lewd. No mods needed for this server, wew lad.

Since there are so many anons playing classic now, I thought I'd post something to help with the terrible perfornance in this game. The 32-bit version of Tera is genuinely awful spaghetti code. The UI in particular causes the biggest fps drops, to the point that you could even spam open profile to invuln through some mechanics/attacks.

Guess I'm playing this ancient version of TERA <The Way It Was Meant To Be Played™>, with a PC build that would've been considered outdated even during its day.

My actual, intended tower is refusing to POST.
This marks the second time in about a year-and-a-half that my PC builds have died on me. First with a MSI PRO Z790-A / i9-13900K pairing, and now with an ASRock X870E Taichi / 9800X3D setup. Both times being CPU failure, despite each chip being two entirely separate manufacturers and specs.
Meanwhile this ancient ROG Strix Z370-E / i7-8700K / GTX 970 fallback machine is still working just as good (or "good") as the day I built it nearly a decade ago. Fucking hate the shoddy state of modern tech, man.

If you're wondering why my screencaps have suddenly downgraded from 4k to standard 1080p again for a while, this is why.
Hopefully I can get my actual, intended 'rig up and running again within a week or two. Really not feeling the authentic 32-bit experience of getting sub-40 FPS basically everywhere.

Worked perfectly fine, until it suddenly just refused to POST. Machine is obviously running (things light up/whir to life, etc), but nothing happens after that opening moment.
There's a two-digit LCD readout on the ASRock X870E Taichi, and it stays at [00]. [00] indicates either a CPU, RAM, or GFX issue, but my RAM is fine, and my 4090 has been a bloody saint compared to the rest of the tech I've had to put up with.
Flashed the BIOS with the latest version while the PC was off via Flashback, but no dice.

Haven't disassembled my AiO and unsocketed the CPU to check the damage yet (will do so later today), but this is a Known Thing.

AMD's other CPUs seem to be fine, it's just the 9800X3D that's the problem. Which massively sucks, since it's also the best CPU for running games released in the 2000s/2010s, due to its considerably expanded V-Cache.

Was about a decade overdue for an upgrade. My "fallback" machine listed above is what I was using prior.
Short version of the story: Saved-up several years worth of spendable cash to build dream PC, centered around Intel's 13th gen series. Issues of said series weren't widely known at the time. i9-13900K does what it is now known to do, and dies about a year later.

The Taichi only has two PCIe x16 slots, but I believe that I did indeed need to use one due to installing my graphics card vertically.
Didn't want to use a vertical mount due to inherently worse airflow, but effectively had no other choice for securing the 4090, since there wasn't any location to mount a proper shelf in my new case (at least none that I could find). Wasn't going to risk letting the thing sag or snap, so going with the needlessly ricer option was the only real choice there.

That said, it's entirely possible that you're correct, and I simply didn't need a motherboard of that scale. If you have any advice on what to potentially swap-out, I'll gladly hear it. (Although I'm also heading to bed after this post, and will thusly read your replies later).

The PCIE for the card itself will not snap, especally not on an expensive mobo because it's also reinfroced. Mobos in particular are prone to jewing with how companies try to gate basic features nowadays to expensive tiers. Give ExitLag a shot, if you're willing to put up with it. Manually targeting the one (1) Canada server that VPN has lowered my ping from ~100-160ms to around ~65-105ms, which is a lot more manageable.
Not ideal compared to just leaning on Skill Prediction or NGSP from the Toolbox on other servers, obviously. But it was practically unplayable for me prior to ExitLag, and now I'm actually able to dodge things pretty consistently.

Believe it's in Ottawa.
And yes, the TERA Toolbox is this game's collection of third-party plug-ins and add-ons. Many of them are just minor quality-of-life things, but some of them can change things quite a bit, similar to what's seen in XIV's Alexander launcher.
A few plug-ins are unfortunately pretty cheat-y as well, so while having Skill Prediction/NGSP would be amazing for lessening ping-related woes on Classic, the entire Toolbox is just banned outright to avoid the hassle.
There IS a version of the oldschool Tera Mod Manager which has been posted on the server's >Discord, however, if you happened to have any ancient 32-bit era model-swap .gpk's lying around. Don't know if nude mods work, but I'd imagine they would if you could find them.

Not aware of what's currently going on in the FFXIV 'scene (left soon after finishing 6.0 back when it was new - evidently a good call), but some plug-ins via the Toolbox were indeed pretty powerful. There's a full Deadly Boss Mod-esque visual guide system for most boss encounters, ways to automate your healing, prevent knockdowns, teleport to maps without needing a World Atlas or Travel Guide...
It's a shame all of that stuff is included alongside more sensible, QoL features, like auto-stacking things in your bank, or making downed party members more easily visible. Plus Skill Prediction/NGSP, which makes playing at ~150ms actually feasible. Alas.

The fact that you're playing in ranges that allows your charges to get interrupted is bad enough as it is when you can move around while charging your nukes. If you actually HAVE to cancel your charge cus of a big attack hitting you, theres esmash.

Zerkers are actually scary in pvp, but once again you just give off the bad player stench... Ignoring the block you have that can ignore every single opening other classes have in this game by simply tapping it, you also have tenacity to ignore stuns, and mocking shout to ignore kd and stagger. landing a SINGLE uncharged, tapped thunderstrike will kd other players, and you can fear their retaliate, making them unable to get away from a followup thunderstrike. If you dont oneshot them with said TS you will now have the full retaliate cd to chain more knockdowns and free damage as you please. TS alone has a short enough cd to keep people kd chained, add in flatten and you can freely fully charge TS. By the time peoples retal is up again, they are dead, if the're not dead, you have inescapable doom, which stops them from using any movement skill, or iframe.

Totally forgot to post about our travels last night, whoops...!

Fresh from our foray into the Basion of Lok, we traveled to the next major destination for any aspiring expedition team wanting to make a name for themselves: The blood-soaked halls of the dreaded Sinestral Manor.
To say the scale of these expeditions were on the rise would be putting it mildly. Felt like this estate was gargantuan enough to be an entire region all on its own, with winding pathways lined with traps, freakish undead, and of course, yet more cultists doings gods-know what behind it all.
Still, despite some close calls (such as our PuG tank getting kicked out of the instance and being unable to re-enter due to PvPers camping the Dungeon entrance...), we managed to make it through relatively unscathed. Nothing that ample application of healing magic - and perhaps getting in-touch with a local tailor/leatherworker/blacksmith - can't fix.

While blitzing through the Manor was pretty neat as a Priest, the queues for it were glacial. Even at 4/5 team-members strong, we were mulling around for what felt like ages waiting for a single tank to show up; be it through standard LFG recruitment, or the Instant Matchmaking system.
As such, I've decided to raise my own Lancer on the side, to hopefully cover both essential roles as needs be.

Quite keen on seeing how Lancer's older self stacks-up against its v100 version, which I'm more familiar with. Should be fun either way.
Although that does call into question whether or not it'd be best to prioritize leveling healers/DPS sooner rather than later, before the wave of new arrivals fades out and leveling Dungeons become next to impossible to find players. Hmm.

Depends on which version you're talking about.
Priest is the more-traditional healer between it and Mystic, with strong healing spells but slower mobility and longer animations to compensate. It's sort-of seen as the "PvE" healer on Classic, whereas Mystic is more suited for PvP, at least to my (admittedly limited) knowledge.
On v100 servers (Starscape/Agaia/Arborea), Priest deals less damage and has less mobility compared to Mystic, but has more readily-available access to party-wide damage reduction and shielding to compensate. Healer damage isn't really a consideration on v32 servers (Classic), however.

Finally tried my hand at tanking as a Lancer on Classic, with a few rounds through everyone's favorite cultist-infested cavern network: The Bastion of Lok.
Whew boy, talk about a stark difference between versions...

Without any sort of offensive ability with built-in shielding on v32 (unlike v100 servers via Onslaught, Wallop, and Super Leap), it felt like all I could really do when pulling swathes of monsters was run into a corner, shout out loud for threat, then promptly park in place with my shield up.
Attempting to use attacks whatsoever, even Shield Bash->Onslaught for its +50% damage reduction every ~30 seconds or so, carried a pretty good chance of me simply getting knocked over. Assuming I ever had the MP to spare, which I very often didn't.

Bosses didn't fare much better, as I'd always find myself starving for MP; even when doing nothing but Shouting on-cooldown, blocking, and desperately animation-canceling the first three hits of my Normal Attack to scrape flecks of MP back inbetween assaults.
The final boss of Lok felt like a complete crapshoot, with him running all over the place regardless of threat, and hordes of monsters flooding in constantly.

I know this role gets better later on.
Quite enjoyed my time tanking on Starscape (even if I never brought my Lancer on that server to anything more complex than Draakon Arena), and my hazy memories of soloing overworld BAMs as a level 30-44 Lancer back in 2012/2013 assure me that this IS a fun class to play when you're up against the right kinds of encounters. But /man/...
The queue times are definitely what I'm playing this class for at the moment, above much else. Surely it must get better than this on Classic, surely.

Warriors are squishy, if you get slapped it hurts even more than lancer. it's easier in general because of the iframes, but their rotation is also harder and consumes lots of mana. their block has less block value than lancer value

For me? Berserker tank.

yeah yuls is on the server, he started even before me and plays on zerk as yulie but me and yuls mostly play healer in 3s because that's the bottleneck for getting matches started

The original island of dawn took like 6 hours to beat and you got the 100 small enemies killed achievement before reaching the tower base after landing. Being able to breeze lvl 1-20 in just an hour is fucking lame. I really wish there was a true classic server where leveling was actually hard and forced you to party up to survive. People learned how to play their fucking class.
