Man it's hard practicing anything in this game when you're new I used to play over 10 years ago but can't remember fuck all

mechanic is a good job to practice with. You get your own private protolathe, circuit printer, the ability to easily produce nearly any machine you can physically get in close proximity to round start (flatpacker) so you could experiment with other departments (like making a chem dispenser to practice), basic engineering access, yellow glubbs, eva access, and most importantly for new people almost zero responsibility. Be aware mechanics are rightfully regarded as thieves and criminals so expect increased discrimination if you are constantly breaking into places.
It's good for learning the basic gist of a lot of stuff but if you want to actually learn the more complex stuff (engines, science departments, medbay stuff) you'd need to play those jobs.

Once you've seen someone setup the SM on vg you've basically mastered atmos. Everyone does the passive cooling method which is trivial to do. There aren't multiple tiers of gasses or anything to worry about like on tg. It's pretty straight forward once you know the steps.

Even if the PR itself has nothing to do with game balance, someone will reply to it with concerns about muh balance. If you try to patch a bug someone will leave a comment complaining about it because that bug is somehow used by powergamers and fixing it will affect game balance. You make one small map change and people will complain about game balance because apparently that maintenance tunnel is used by antags to get away from security and if you change it you're fucking with the game balance. That random static item spawn on a map? Essential for game balance. Shitty food item no chef ever makes? You touch that, and it'll ruin the game balance. Want to add job content to engineers so they stop being glorified tiders after setting up the SM? Game balance. Balance this, balance that. I have balance fatigue.
The worst part is that those people making all the PRs for game balance and complaining about game balance all the time in the forums, discord, and github aren't regular players. It's almost always admins, maintainers, and the players that are in their cliques. The shitty fucking obsessing with balanceposting and removing everything fun/interesting on TG is a top-down mandate sanctioned by the people who run the server. Every TG tranny admin bwoinking you for something about "powergaming" is a powergamer themselves with 20 PRs changing shit for "balance" purposes. These people claim to be roleplay-focused but they treat the game no different from a MOBA. Fuck them all.

On an older version of tg if you could mix gasses in a certain way that they would start shooting out nuclear particles in random directions and it would also get to insane temperatures and pressures. If you got hit by the nuclear particle you were pretty much guaranteed to die within the next 5 minutes from radiation damage and random mutations. It also wasn't 100% reliable. I could do it 3/4 times but never 100%.

when I started playing TG was at the tail end of what was when it was good, coincidently when it had the old sprites that /vg/ kept. The stupidest part is that the machine is so arcane and convoluted that it rarely gets used for its intended purpose. In my time on TGstation I only happened across like 3 people who actually knew how to use the fusion reactor, and they still preferred to make their gasses the normal way using turf/pipenet reactions. It takes nearly an entire round to set it up in a manner to actually get yields from it and uses an absurd amount of power. 99% of the time anyone setting up the fusion reactor was just trying to cause a meltdown or get superheated gasses for some other purpose. It perfectly embodies the TG codebase mentality, removing a beloved feature and replacing it with something needlessly complex that no one likes to use for its intended purpose.

A popular naruto game exist too, I just don't have info about it but you can probably easily find out by asking around in the DU discord. I tried looking up "NFF byond" in google search and didn't get it, but NFF is the acronym it goes by. I don't even think it's the first big naruto byond game I think it's a remake of the previous popular one but they've been hidden to avoid copyright. Keep in mind though that the DBZ game isn't just strongmen only, it has a reasonable amount of base building. Not as in depth as ss13 but it lets you buy training gear, stuff to redo your stats, and even tactical stuff/goofy stuff like smokesbombs and landmines. It still has it's quirks that helps it fit in byond and while not necessary to play having a base is a great place to not get jumped for 10 minutes

idk how bad the naruto one is but the DBZ cash shop isn't too nasty. There's one option that lets you reincarnate which lets you roll for a special race chance but you can unlock it ingame pretty reasonably, same for they can roll for random artifacts but not one they want which is an insane waste of money. Other things let you level up faster but that's not really needed with rubberbanding and era based power caps. The int boosting perks are probably the only P2W that I would argue are a net negative to the game but if they're not running an android build it's more negligible since int is more tied to base building and annoying techs that int would affect like drones and turrets are useless or disabled

Naruto GOA is fun to play, but it’s not a roleplaying game. The Dragon Ball game (DU) is really fun for roleplaying IMO, I’ve played two wipes (each wipe lasts like a month or two then there’s a break) and had fun. Sadly there was a bit of a dip in players because of the DDOS, they said the player count is pretty stable and has been for years. Some people really take it personally, though while most understand you get killed in these kind of games and have to remake sometimes. They curate what’s in the roleplaying server based on the wipe, so stuff like the injector just aren’t in Roleplay. I do think it would have been better to go in with a group or just another person you know though so you can play together as a team or organisation or something, or have a matching gimmick. Everyone is kind of in the know, it’s a dragon ball game so silly characters are fine and so are serious ones. I played a wizard then a galactic patroller. Even if you go in alone, it’s easy to make IC friends and allies. I think people get put off because people write long emotes but you’re not required to. It’s just wrapped up but it should be back at the end of September I think.

It could just be that the solar panels were blocked, they only generate power if they have the right angle and aren't obscured by any walls in a certain distance (I think it's 20 tiles). Eventually the station will "rotate" to where that section of the solars is not blocked.
Generally when setting up solars it's better to just deconstruct the SMES and wire them directly to the grid. The SMES is really only useful if you want to moderate the power flow or want to save some emergency power, neither of which is relevant if you're using solars as your main power source.

Wire code is pretty jank unlike pipe-code. If they share the same tile even if not visibly connected, they likely are connected. Knots can be ignored and only look ugly, you can use a multitool on wires to check if they're powered. If you use the rapid cable layer it should allow you to wire solars without needing to click/kill yourself. Solars aren't the most fun engine but they're reliable and teach you part of the difference between wiring to SMES and when you can chose to bypass them to wire to the grid
To why some of them weren't working, usually due to sun orientation only 1 or 2 sides generate power at once for most stations.

SS13 works being open-source because of it's sandbox nature, so many devs can contribute what they want without the game losing it's initial focus.
The anime bootleg spinoff games on BYOND are much more focused in scope which means one person adding content can have much more ramifications for the game as a whole. I know DU still has some sandbox elements (don't know much about the Naruto one) but the point of Dragon Universe is to train and fight so any development of the game has to be organized around that, as opposed to SS13 which lost it's identity as an ideal gas law simulator decades ago. Those games going open-source wouldn't benefit from having more manpower to add a bunch more random features like SS13.

byond has natively supported higher-resolution sprites, non-tile-based movement, menus, and better graphics/animation/image effects for years now, all of which could enhance erp, it's just that ss13 codebases are built around 2003-era byond code and it would have to be entirely rewritten from scratch to support some of those new byond features.
one could easily make a game that looks like and plays like a multiplayer RPGM h-game with CG scenes or actual sex animations and all that jazz in newer versions of byond but without all the jank and mechanics that ss13 erpers don't engage with like atmospherics. probably the most difficult part would just be making actual sprites and art that isn't a 32x32 pixelated spessman from 2003, but gooners could easily commission or make those assets themselves considering the sheer amount of gooner content that is made every week on the internet. My advice is to take it slow as you can. I have somewhere around 1000 hours and there's still stuff I'm learning because I didn't consume as much information as possible. Also if you want to learn, the best way is really to just ask people in character. Non-faggots love to show a new guy the ropes, and it creates camaraderie with your fellow crew. Ironically, I've had fewer issues with WebView2 than IE9+ when it came to running BYOND on Linux.
Before WebView2, nothing that used modern TGUI would work right, if at all. Lighting was broken on /vg/, Goon was practically unplayable, and I'd constantly get soft locks regardless of server.
Now, the worst thing that happens is that the chat window has a habit of blacking out semi-frequently before it updates, either by a new text line appearing or by scrolling up and down.
Then again, at the time I tried before WebView2, I was using a(n at the time) meme distro (Void). Getting the required dependencies, whether they were for running WINE or running programs within WINE, wasn't always the most pleasant experience...

Besides, a majority the games' code are from traditional SS13, even after removing some major systems like atmospherics the SS13 DNA is still there. You are correct, I must've gotten BYOND confused with some other platform that charges an upload fee. It still requires you to be a BYOND member to store your actual game files on the BYOND servers for people to download, otherwise you have to host your files yourself (which anyone running a server is already technically doing, so it's still free for them).
There is this thing on the hub entry page about volunteer moderators or BYOND staff possibly removing a hub entry if it doesn't fit the tags but I really doubt Lummox or any of his jannies will actually bother.

I can see why though, after playing for so long the players tend to go to greater extremes to derive fun when there is not as much novelty, and SS13 itself is a chaotic simulator, so they are overall more likely to get in trouble, and most admins see their long list of notes and bans over the years and think they're griefing shitters who got away with it for too long and not regular players with a lot of rounds played. One of the permabans was for speedrunning the round and the player admitted he hasn't read the rules in literal years (and honestly, who has read them recently except for the admins? The speedrunning rule was from 2 or 3 years ago), the other really long ban was because the other player assisted in a captain's murder as a non-antag v*x trader (you can empty the armory and get killed by Security but NEVER stun someone who's being killed).
