How come it's difficult to implement different character models based on the weight mechanic?
I've seen a few people attempt it but you have to do weird shit with the mod and run java code etc
>>1844503best case I can see is maybe having sanctuary towns kind of like fallout 1/2, filled with npcs with in-depth dialogue and quests you can do mixed with a barter system.
combative npcs can be set in specific areas out in the world, maybe the prison is filled with prisoners who are loose etc
few buildings have psychotic npc survivors who are KoS
but I doubt they will ever go that in-depth because the game goes from a bland as fuck grind simulator "hehehehe your suppose to die eventually!" to an actual nonshit game with goals and a world.
>>1846110looks good. i may even reinstall the game! can't believe we've been on a 13 year detour when this is the only thing people have ever wanted from the game. imagine 13 years of npc work instead of rewriting the engine three times and craftingslop. we could have had a proper lighting system outta the box if they'd just used unity
>>1846192you'd need to edit every clothing item in the game to morph to the new shape to eliminate clipping, as well as things like backpack position and movement during animation, weapons on the back and so forth
one way of getting around it would be just apply the clothes texture directly to the player skin, and to parent teh bag onto the characters back
i dont think you can parent objects in this engine though
>>1846216Yeah I have a personal model I made in blender and reshaped a few clothing pieces and bags but I have to basically use them as replacers to make it work.
I was trying to find something where only my custom model loads in for a specific weight class, with the way I do it now it just auto replaces all characters with the new model, even the zombies.
>>1825651>lemmy is just an alcoholiceverything makes sense now.
>naoseous

hey guys I think I came down with something mind letting me into the safe house for some rest?
>>1846268actually that would be another thing they could do with npcs, you fall asleep in your base but an event spawns where you hear a knock and wake up to a survivor that doesn't feel well and is begging to come in to rest.
there's a 50/50 chance they're infected but if they're not you get a huge reward or maybe a unlock.

>>1846110gawddamn, almost makes me want to play b42. hoping when 42 comes out offically there is enough 'hype' around the game still just imagine the possibilities with rts mechanics. I honestly wish Lemmy would get his chode out of his mouth and just off these guys jobs, aren't they sitting on millions due to the game blowing up with b41mp?
>>1845567 (OP)>winter themed image in the middle of summerZombrosโฆ we lost the OP
>>1845818Probably just the sheer volume of the zomboids combined with the nerfs to melee and firearms. Without a mod to tweak the firearms, like "Advanced Trajectory" or being a melee gigachad it can be a pain to clear even with B41 settings. I killed like 4k zombies in that one location + maybe a few hundred walking there from Westpoint for somewhat mediocre loot (even with loot settings turned up!). Its not worth IMO.
>>1845818People don't understand how to play the game. You can fight infinite zombies if you just retain enough stamina to outrun them enough to get to a place to catch a breather. Or you have a car.
>>1846474not playing with sprinters is cheating for this reason.
>>1846474Fighting and training around thousands of zombies, especially with the nerfs to combat, is absurdly tedious. Its not really fun nor difficult its just kind of...eh?

Do npc work in multiplayer? The bandit mod+day 1 is unironicly some of the most fun I've had with this game everything is so chaotic.

>>1846793I think KEE and maybe bandits works in MP on the b41 versions, but you're stuck with split screen on b42. I heard there's some jank mod to re-enable actual MP on nexus or something but it'll probably be the same quality as the mod for B41 that deleted that line of code blocking MP - IE desynced and unplayable without anything done yet
>>1847221Well sad, when 42mp finally comes out in the following decade :^) we should do a server with bandits+day 1 with LV spawns or something. could be some fun chaotic few hours before we get bored by how slow zomboid normally is.
I haven't played in quite a while, how's 42? I always felt like a proper hunting mechanic was missing from my innawoods playthroughs, is it worth trying again?
Also was unarmed combat changed at all? Just shoving zombies down and stomping them in kinda sucks, I wish you could learn figthing styles and go Mike Tyson on the zeds.

>>1847113The one with bombing is Week One. It's intended more to kill you or serve as a constantly-interesting short playthrough rather than a serious long term one. KEE is the best NPC mod currently and is designed in-line with the devs own plans for NPCs, so you could go read old mon/thursdoids and get a pretty good idea of what he's trying to do. Soldiers currently enforce the curfew and exist at the checkpoint, NPCs have their own groups and generated bloodlines/families and explore out into the world to scavenge. It's still pretty basic but leagues ahead of anything else modders or Lemmy have made publicly playable.
3.0 seems pretty significant, he's shown off stuff like NPCs driving vehicles and having dynamic dialogue IE weather, injuries to certain areas before. Not sure precisely what will be included in the release. Factions and some dialogue for sure, as well as very basic scripted story beats like zombies attacking a safehouse. The modability of those scripted events has me very excited, imagine a thousand NPC script mods in the workshop for different roadside random events like Skyrim instead of truemusic addons or server repacks
>>1847113>re: tipsChat up people by doing all the dialogue options before asking them to join. If they're in a family it's harder, but I don't think they care about leaving their group if it's all randos. If one of their family members is already in your group they always join in my experience, so it's worth trying RNG to snag one person and then you can scoop up two or three more.
You can always damage hostiles regardless of your PVP toggle, so I just leave friendly fire off. You'll hurt your own people otherwise. Aim at them from afar and see if your reticle turns red to know if they're hostile, otherwise it's usually obvious by what they're wearing (bikers & rangers are dickheads). You can briefly switch PVP on to kill somebody but there's usually not much point in proactively murdering them; they do have good stuff, but you can walk in and grab it and leave before they turn hostile anyway. It takes a bit to get them mad by doing that, hunger eventually turns them hostile too so you can leave areas around them alone to 'farm' them and keep them alive. IME it's useful to have at least a few around a town long term to ambiently clear/distract zombies like a web of satellite decoys.
There's one spot in every safehouse where they consolidate most of the loot, usually a closet shelf or wardrobe near the front door. Soldiers do abide by curfew but I've seen them around even at other times and they will fire on you/your vehicle. They spawn mostly around Rosewood/Muldraugh, so if you go hide in a cabin or even Doe Valley or something you wouldn't see them.
I don't think player-built buildings (or basements) play well with the NPC pathing or zones for bases. They'll still follow you around and survive but stop being able to get to food in your storage and other issues. Otherwise the safehouse system works and you can make them useful wood slaves.

>>1847582>TWDCouldn't make it past season 4 but I admit the first season was amazing. Anyway, sounds about right with NPC's offical or not the community should strive to match that energy with mods.

Thinking about NPC dialogue and how it could be implemented well. I know CK2 is their inspiration for personality, but I remember this game I played as a kid, Urbz on the GBA, had a robust minigame.
You start a conversation and get three topics. Each topic gave a different response based on the NPC, raising or lowering relationship score. You could simply look at most of the characters - or get a few topics in - and get a good idea of what they liked and what they didn't, but all had a few thorns to keep it mixed. It was more unpredictable for late-game ones. Some of them told you secrets, cooking recipes or useful strategies. Most of the time the speech was just comedic or interesting blurb text from their life with a minor REL nudge in either direction, then after you selected it you got a new set.
A similar system could be applied for casual conversation here. There would still be a handful of 'story' characters with unique lines, but for the most part it would be randomly generated preset dialogues with maybe a couple of topics linked in tandem to keep a consistent timeline. Selected topics in a box and overhead text.
>Learned lockpicking from dad (hobbies, crime, family topics)
>Family fled city (vehicles, city, 'day 1' topics)
>Lost family to raiders in [raider spawnpoint] (bandits, crime, death, family topics)
Talking to a woman about crime could lead to either her talking about knowing how to pick locks, or the time her family got massacred. A hungry looter won't teach you how to cook or even like you bringing up food. If they know you well they might get furious and verbally throw something awful in your face. It changes based on the person and their mood and disposition, so you could sus out lies by getting them drunk or asking around.
In practice, you'd paint a unique cast of survivors and world out of all the overlapping tales and chatter learned over time. I just want 'Louisville' as a topic so I can hear all the horror stories over a campfire.

There's something interesting to me that rimworld's "true" playthrough with as much official content as possible would more closely resemble a technocult out of 40k (rituals and anomalies, spacer-tech everywhere, psycasting and the empire, ships) than a lightly sci-fi wild west setting.
Back when the game launched I thought post launch content would basically be Vanilla Factions Expanded - Settlers and lean into the setting's original theme, at most adding new ancient ruins or preset religions since the kickstarter had them listed. I like the psycultist stuff better so I'm not dogging on it or anything but the wild west stuff got kind of lost in the weeds for going full spacer, one tribal gimmick tree per expack doesn't change that

>This patch requires an update to the class files. This means that you need to reinstall the mod.
>This is also a breaking change. Your old npcs will not be recoverable.
>Patch notes:
>Completely redesign how npcs are organized architecturally. This is the main cause if the breaking change.
>Add framework for npc stories.
>Make npcs dynamically visit relatives and neighbours in order to group up.
>Make npcs form factions automatically once their group reaches 8 members.
>Allow the player to form a faction once they have at least 8 members in their group (excluding the player).
>Add framework for defining dialogue trees.
>Add possibility of defining safehouses manually.
>Add new FindItemSubTree behavior for fetching required items.
>Make npcs fetch an axe if available in safehouse before trying to chop trees.
>Make npcs fetch a hammer, planks, and nails for barricading instead of spawning in items on-demand.
>Add basic farming - npcs can plow, plant, and water (if given a container with water)
>Add ugly npc radial with placeholder icons (Default: Hold Tab)
>Add buttons for resetting npcs completely as well as deleting files containing npc data via the "Load Game" menu in-game.
>Known issues:
>This is a massive change to how all data is stored. If you run into any issues, please report it on Discord together with the logs, so I can deal with all of these issues.
>The procedural generation UI has a safeguard in itself where if a tick takes more than 1 second, it will auto stop. This number of npcs will 100% not work with your PC, but the actual cutoff is lower. This will be improved in coming patches.
>Scavenging seems to get stuck sometimes. It will be fixed in v0.3.1.
>Some seed types are not identified correctly when npcs try to plant.
>Seeds have to be unpackaged for npcs to identify them correctly.
>Npcs can't refill any fluid container so that they can water plants (use rain collectors)

>>1849154>Good news everyone! We have hired the very talented mod maker Snejk. We will put his skills to use right away on a minigame for pissing and shitting! Then Knox Event Expanded gets removed from the workshop because he is "too busy" to work on it
>>1849162i don't think theres anyway to revamp it
the old 2D combat system, guns (and most melee weapons) were insta kill. that works well in a game intended for you to quickly drop-in and start roleplaying a pre-made character
but theres no roleplay anymore, people don't wanna lose their 20000000 hour unmodded caveman runs
"survival crafting" ruined the game
>>1849240this is so easily solved if the occupations actually gave the related skills one would have.
>>1849246bingo. there should never be recipes and items locked behind dozens of hours of grinding. it should be item locked and class locked instead. so if you want to learn new recipes you find the book for it, not grind for 20 hours so you can learn how to build a chair or whatever the fuck.
>>1849290Not exactly sure what you mean when you say class locks but you should be able to learn how to make chairs if you started as a doctor or to become a doctor if you got the right books. Anyway I've been using this mod lately and it feels right along with starting gear. Though the latter mod could use tweaks (rangers carry guns irl but don't start with one, instead having a trap for some reason?)
I'd just like to know how exactly you imagine what playing with the NPCs is going to be like if melee pvp combat looks like this
>>1847667it will be nothing but an extremely frustrating experience if anyone can jump you with a tire iron and then stomp on your nuts while you're phasing out of the third dimension on your 6 months old character you've been playing every day for the past 3 weeks trying to grind the three million skills the game expects you to
no wonder they haven't released the NPCs yet, they'd get shit on so fucking hard it wouldn't even be funny anymore
>>1849415Not that I represent other Anons but I only really want NPC's for simulating LV checkpoint collapse and day 1 chaos. Maybe the occasional story event where you see a survivor just before he dies, stuff like that. Base automation with NPC's would be cool though I'm fine being lone wolf who never interacts with the living.

>>1857116Swinged through rosewood, no survivors or military south of it, went to march ridge to clear some annotated maps in the residential block, there were only 2, none of who wanted to join me.
Running next to muldraugh, nothing pinged my walkie so i just flew by, looted it earlier in the week.
West point was next, no survivors at all throught the whole city (weird), maybe 200 blocks isn't enough to encompass the city proper if you drive the main road.
Up the highway, based in the ruby gas station as i took a rest for a night. No military at the checkpoint, busted a hole in the east fence and entered LV.
Driving right in the middle of LV at 20 fps, nobody pinged my radio, i decided to cut my losses and just go to AA'rons guns and dip, BUT i got pinged at the east end (finally) found a survivor home with 4 people (2 joined me on the spot, other 2 were married apparently) to outfit the new gang i went to the surplus store by the docks, well..
Of the 1264 npcs, it seems that i found only 6 by gunning it down the main roads of rosewood, march ridge, muldraugh, west point, LV, either they all died or everyone is hiding.
Oh well, returning to echo creek with my milsurp kitted slaves to give them guns.
Conclusion is, no military presence at all anywhere after 2 weeks (LORE ACCURATE), i didn't find any corpses of the soldiers at the checkpoint, to be fair, i didn't delve deep into it but there were no soldier zombies at all.
Why is the faggot in charge of Week One making it worse?
I want to make zomboid cartoons. How do I rip the models for blender? Is there like a resource for this somewhere?
>>1857344Devs paid him off
>>1857344QRD? I only played it a bunch of times during the early hype.
Indiestone is playing the long game. NPCs are a major feature that can define Project Zomboidโs future. By hiring experienced modders for other foundational tasks first, Indie Stone is ensuring that when NPCs do arrive, theyโll be stable, meaningful, and worth the wait.

>>1857591Defenses are useless, they're just for aesthetics. Your best defense is still clearing 1-2 screens worth of space around your base.
That said, rebuilding shit because you didn't notice a zombie bashing against your shit is annoying, so yes turn it on.
>>1857635>rebuilding shit because you didn't notice a zombie bashing against your shit is annoying, so yes turn it on.so i should let zombies be able to attack my base without knowing? that doesn't sound awful. ok.
Someone tell TIS to do a thursdoid on the remaining crafitng professions they need to finish and multiplayer news. The intermittent patches and balance stuff are nothingburgers and its been 7 months since the beta and its still boring as fuck.

>>1857643NTA but I think he meant turn it off. Zombies will basically tear through any defenses you've built in like two irl hours, tops.
I hate going out for a ride and coming back to my base just to find my walls all fucked up. Most people will base up in fixed locations on the map to avoid that.

Should I play stable or latest build?
What do you guys play?
Is there any potential for zomboid but also with settlements and npc management? Like is that something that is theoretically possible
>kill a deer
>butcher it
>can't skin it because I need a butcher hook for it
>kill another
>can't pack it inside a car because it is too heavy
>literally driving around with planks, nails and hammer to build butcher hooks on the spot when I kill the next one
Yup, can't hang the deer from the tree to cut it up, people just couldn't skin animals until butcher hook was invented. Sounds realistic as fuck to me.
>>1858346The average 90's survivalist wouldn't know how to skin a deer without previously constructed infrastructure
People did not skin animals for any purpose until wooden housing was available.
>>1858353Shouldn't a park ranger know how to at least field dress a deer though?
>>1858399The average park ranger of 1993 only knew how to walk through trees a little faster than normal people, and not much else.
>>1858329Stable. B42 is a meme.
>Try bandits week one
>Set infection to everyone's infected
>Kill someone to start the apocalypse early
>He doesnt reanimate
Disappointing
>small young tree can total a multi ton car instead of getting flattened
>saplings can bring a car to a crawl instead of getting flattened
offroading is nearly impossible after a few months when all the trails are starting to get overgrown
>>1858942This may be no longer working. But you used to be able to equip and axe and enable chop wood so you would get the green outline for the trees and saplings so you could avoid them while driving.
Sorry for the retarded written post
>>1857591I think itโs immersive to see the world get more and more run down organically. Expect most buildings to have missing doors and windows very quickly. Which makes sense. This of course means if you want to base up you might have to learn some carpentry
>>1849240Youโve posted this same clip for months. Is this the ONLY time youโve done PVP or something? Itโs reached the point where I recognise it just from the fucking thumbnail. Give it a rest
>>1858942Yup, this was super annoying when I played one year later and tried to get to the cabin in the woods by the radio station. It would basically be faster to walk than drive a car because you constantly had to get out to chop down foliage.
>>1859536>picwhat has to happen in someone's life for them to want to draw something like this?

I've posted it only once after I made it, everything after that are reposts by someone else
that pvp interaction also killed the entire serb it took place on, error2k had a hissy fit in the general afterwards and his entire group that was living in the hospital left with him
>>1859929That entire group was just one other guy, me. I think it was just one clique of 4-5 people and us three playing there though.
Not sure if I actually quit after that, I think I had this house in the same server. It was a nice house.

Does this count as post nuke? I went into my basement after a helicopter dropped pamphlets and the world exploded after I got a tip about a plane being above me.
I want to start exploring but I'm willing to stay indoors if it still hasn't dropped.
>>1861797Nevermind, zombies started spawning inside my basement and I got pulled down.
>>1861876Why did the week one mod maker do that gay shit
>>1861975It could be a consequence of the new ragnoll that sends bodies into orbit fallout 3 style. Maybe the corpses are there, but the models are in the stratosphere before they reanimate.
>>1861975>download NPC slop>expect it not be slop
>>1861797In retrospect, the death was deserved. I was inentionally hunkering down for the nuke event so I can do Threads Larp, but I picked westpoint which only had the hardware store as the guaranteed big basement spawn and I didnt want to prep there because it would have had respawning owners till the end. I used whatever basement I could find and it was studio sized no matter how I honeycombed it. I probably wouldnt have gotten pulled down if I had something with multiple rooms.
door

๐
Do you need a sledgehammer to open these doors now? Back in b41 they could be dismantled just like any other door in the game.
How do I actually learn how to play this game?
>>1862688The most fun way is to just keep playing and exploring simple concepts until the blocks start lining up. It will take a while, you'll probably have no idea where you are, and you'll probably waste a fuckton of time, but you'll have a ton of fun memories in the process.
The most efficient way is to set loot to max, turn zombies off, set power and water to eternal, and have a map and wiki/youtube tutorial on your second monitor and individually scrutinize every mechanic and interaction. Study how cars are hotwired and replaced, how generators are repaired, how each shop organizes its loot spawns (book shelves, shopping shelves, tool shelves etc) and then find the most efficient and sustainable weapons to use and laser focus on just one class to manage your exp.
>>1862686These doors have a lot of hp, just hack it with an axe for a while, they will break.
>>1862686The option to dismantle locked door have been removed in B42, so you'll have to break it (you can use any weapon but axes are faster iirc) or find the key.
Week One should really be in the base game. I can't imagine playing without it anymore.
>>1863143They're decent giving you bandit bases to attack, but I think superb survivors are better overall though its at least more demanding performance wise.
>Run into superb survivor>He's minding his own business trying to loot a building>He doesn't make a beeline for the player and instead stops and warns the player before brandishing>His melee attacks aren't magnetic and fighting him up close feels like youre both playing under the same rulesBut yeah, max pop superb survivors in Louisville is crazy laggy. Theyre all setting up bases, looting and relocating resources and forming factions complete with joining dialogue so you know whos who.
>>1863155I tried Louisville and had like 3 FPS the whole time.
>>1863157What I like to do is use both mods. Low pop Superb survivors (like 1% spawn, 20 max) for friendlies and roamers so you can have organic interactions while exploring. Then I set my bandits as defenders so I can have fun raids with my team of friendlies.
>>1863155>>1863157you now realize NPCs will never ever happen
>>1863536TIS would make it frustraing and somehow grindy. They'll probably add another skill tree that takes 7 ranks to convince an npc to water the crops and a magazine to get them to board your car. It'll be like kenshi with permadeath, except the npcs have a single digit percentage to spawn and it'll have multiple skill requirements to build the silence of the lambs room that let you train speech on a captive.
>>1859973was this that AI slop server that had a meltdown when someone said nigger on it?
>>1862686Perfect example of why axe+spear chads are the best build.
>Oh shit, a locked door!Just smash it with a stone axe and it'll break with ease.
>>1863996AI slop in 2022 was still at the level of Will Smith eating spaghetti
>B42 is nearly 8 months in beta
>liquid system released 8 months ago
>none of the updates expanded upon the chemistry system after 8 months
>blacksmith system released 8 months ago
>recipes mildly changed; survival-craft shitty ore lump coming out of the ground added; it doesn't even spawn on the main map
>pottery system added 8 months ago
>justification is that you can make clay pipes (literally redundant in a zombid apocalypse since you have thousands of kilometers worth of regular pipes everywhere)
>nothing expanded upon it after 8 months
>>1866822they should just opensource it and let people finish it for them
>>1866810Don't let them psyop you into thinking it's a 'beta', B41 still wasn't fucking finished when B42 released. The whole game is a beta, and every update is exactly to the standards the developers are happy with (that is to say, no standards at all).
