I emote very rarely. Sometimes there will be a perfect moment for it where I feel inspired to do it, but otherwise I don't force it. One decent way to make distinct characters is to go by the 5e character sheet, where characters have an ideal, bond, and flaw. Here's some suggested ones from the archaeologist background as an example.
Ideal: All my exploring is part of a plan to find the secret of everlasting life.
Bond: I want to find my mentor, who disappeared on an expedition some time ago.
Flaw: I have a secret fear of some common wild animal – and in my work, I see them everywhere.
This last one is actually something I use for one of my characters, he will become terrified when a certain hostile mob shows up and will be totally unable to fight back. It's the little things that go a long way.

Well leon, to be honest I do think it has kind of reached that point, ya lost the plot, you stopped treating the party like a cooperative game and started to fixate on your own character rather than as a member of a crew, you turned into a devious chaotic neutral among the many other based retards who turn a roleplaying game into their sporting event and ought to just be told to delete their character and create a new one
Maybe stunning the captain who got killed by the clown isn't the problem, it's that the players who stun the captain are problem players who want to be the top of the food chain and throw a fit when they lose it

I've only ERPed a few times in this game and it's with people who I know before via non-erotic roleplay. My most recent being in April on a Bay downstream as an IPC paramedic (humanoid positronics meant to be as helpful and harmless as possible) giving a massage to my sinta'unathi CMO (a very martial and religious group of crocodilians), innocently chatting with him about things (so that he's not just lying there) before transitioning to a happy ending even though it's not exactly something he asked for. We're still roleplaying with eachother as he's very obviously struggling to keep it together and he can't do much about his honor when my metal grippers are holding the most sensitive and tender part of his body, both of us knowing that nobody's going to believe the justification he tells the captain if he smashes his robot. It's no more than a few minutes until we're both done.

Esoteric cargo knowledge: The chute noise plays when the delivery cycle BEGINS, this is why you can dive into the disposal unit and the animation starts but the redshirt will still run up to click eject and you come out before you even start moving through disposals. It's quite possible that in your rush you hit the lever when you heard the chute noise initially play and the crates entered the entry chute before the first shipment actually sent, wait for the chute noise to complete before sending the next shipment, slow is smooth smooth is fast

If it's a situation like this where it's just you being a bad service worker then your best option is to just man the fuck up and DELIVER THE PACKAGE. I know the mail tube is goated but sometimes it doesn't work out perfectly, if it's the bar that's a relatively public area so you can hopefully just put all the crates back into the disposal unit there and try mailing it again, but if niggers are acting up in the lobby possibly hacking the mulebots and put them in the lobby with the remote to start siccing them like attack dogs

Also the real reason why nobody plays cargo is because the old players would rather play assistant due to the flexibility while also being the ones who unwrench the vending machine to grab whatever they want, meanwhile the new players start out their first actual rounds in cargo before quickly moving on to medbay, cook, janitor, botany, and since we don't get many new players... You can do a lot worse, some of the most smoothbrain welding fuel snorters wear the shorts, I wanna slit the throat of the simplemobs who return the shuttle while there's still items on it because he NEEDS his Electrical Maintenance Crate NOW

Cargo's for being the only source of guns when Security is being too authoritarian to let people have fun. They're insurance but it requires a sufficiently staffed Cargo that doesn't get bullied into submission by Security, or worse, have Security sympathizers that will refuse to let the greyshirt have his crate of stun weapons that he paid for. The only problem is that you need emitters to start your journey and Security will probably use the emitters as an excuse to get you canned and demoted if they don't like you. Really once you get into the esoteric cargo knowledge, accessing an emitter is kind of the easy part, one of those things that gets hammered out within 20 minutes. Off the top of my head I got like a dozen different methods to break a crate: IEDs, mining PKA, Dan's chocolate EMP, mutated cockroach from the egg boxes, siege cannon, a while ago I used to be a real nigger and steal the emitter from the research asteroid. But I will admit that the first crate you break is the emitter crate since they're just objectively the best method due to their throughput - just line up the crates and they pop one by one.
By that point (15-20 minutes) you'll have like engineering supplies n shit and probably know what the station's gonna want from you; the religious shit with holy water for cults, emitters and lasers for blobs, loyalty implants for revs/cult, guns for ops. But otherwise like 70% of the rounds where it's just traitors then it's up to you, which is the real hard part since you gotta pretend to be an adult watching the miner GPSs or teaching the fuel huffer cargo technicians and shit... Or you gotta do a GIMMICK so people don't think you're a boring player by like building a bunch of vending machines in the halls and watching as the redshirts chimp out and haul off the one sectech or mailing people crates they didn't ask for or giving the clown $800 worth of wormhole jaunters so they can jaunt into the captain's office or maybe turn the warehouse into a power plant or get a million fuse bombs cause you can buy welding fuel or give the greyshirts bags full of guns when they start complaining about security... yeah fuckin guns too mate always have some guns on hand to uh anticipate security needs. But when the redshirts arrive I keep the guns in the cargo tech locker, they've searched the QM locker and the warehouse but never the cargo tech lockers for some reason, you really do need guns cause cargo's very open and directly borders maintenance so grues get in

Yeah, the wiki is missing a lot of useful information. The carts can be dragged behind the tractor, and I think you can do as many as you'd like, but it works like snake where running into your own carts disconnects them. It works the same as the falcon, snowmobiles, and the janicart, so it needs the key to work. You can either leave the key in the ignition or hold it in your hand. I don't recommend having an absurdly long chain of carts because people will start screwing with you and disconnecting them.

There's a few anons that have zero patience for newfags whatsoever. Additionally, there's a couple anons that deliberately troll you when told you're new (not counting clowns as that's kind of expected). There's maybe 3 people I've encountered that are nice to newfags and have helped guide through things a bit when I've asked. Mistakes in SS13 are a great roleplay opportunity and a good way of making your character relatable. You shouldn't see screw ups as a failure. The important part is how you interact with other players, not the ability to push a crate into a conveyor belt.

/vg/station has trouble teaching newfags partially because it's a server that has a lot of long-time players. A majority of the playerbase on /vg/ has been around for at least several years, as opposed to many of the big hub servers which have a majority of their playerbase with account ages between several months and a couple of years. We just don't get a lot of new players so having to deal with them isn't something /vg/ spessmen are used to.
Most other servers that frequently cycle through new players are better when it comes to teaching them just because they have to put up with a lot of new players, unfortunately those servers have vastly different codebases than /vg/ so what you learn there won't transfer to here.

There was a /vg/14 test server a while back, but I'm pretty sure it's abandoned for good.
Also, to make matters worse, any server that's hosted can be dehubbed at will if they don't follow the devs' arbitrary guidelines, and can be authbanned so players can't join the server regardless if it's on the hub or not. AFAIK WizDen allowed /vg/14 despite it being a 4chan server, and I assume it's not worked on or hosted anymore because of a lack of interest, both from the coders and the players. If a /vg/ admin could clarify this, I'd appreciate it.
There's a fork of SS14 called SSMV, which uses a key-based auth system for servers that want to be decentralized from WizDen, but the only server that is hosted using that is the fork dev's 18+ furry server.
I've looked into converting the current /vg/14 codebase to SSMV, but I've failed to do so in the few times I've tried.

Leon getting a trader ban was deserved but getting a race ban is asinine. If the main problem with Fiyah was that she kept getting involved in the crew despite being a non-crew role, then just making Leon play crew roles as Fiyah would've fixed the problem. I know the wiki is outdated, but some of it is structured so strangely. I think it would be easier to follow if there was a separate page for each object (at least the important objects), with a brief description of what it does, what role(s) are associated with it, where you'd normally find or obtain it, and how to build / disassemble it, as well as some tips or secrets at the bottom.
Same could be done for key items too, with a mention of their size in inventory (tiny / small / large / two-handed / etc.), their blunt force as a weapon, and some of their interactions based on intent, etc.
Obviously, this would be a lot of work. I am wondering why the wiki was never really structured this way, perhaps there's a good reason for it beyond "it's too much work"?

Currently, there's a few wiki pages that list multiple objects and/or items in a giant list. It's not very practical to navigate and you can't search for these items/objects by name easily, and the info provided is limited. These lists are okay as a cheat-sheet but aren't a good starting point for beginners to learn about items. The wiki's Item template is okay for these less-detailed listings, but a poor choice for items that would benefit from more detail. I think something a bit like the "Station Infobox" wiki template could work as a starting point for individual item and object pages - this has an infobox on the right, with an image (of the item/object), and brief description underneath; the left side can then contain a brief description about the item, with page contents below that for different sections as usual.

Several servers actually have scripts that automatically update the wiki from the codebase, which would save everyone a lot of headaches, but I have no idea how one would actually go about implementing that. A script that would generate a page listing every certain object type like tools or containers, and there stats would make keeping the wiki updated very easy.

My gripe with this is that it doesn't redirect to a particular object if you use the wiki's searchbar to find it by name. If you're really new to the game, you might not know what category the object would be filed under to begin with, leading you to have to either ctrl-f on each category listing, or search the item name in quotes and check the results (which doesn't always work either), it's a PITA as I've been in that exact position before.

that's just a problem with the wiki having almost redirect pages. for example on TG's wiki if you search "oxygen" it brings you to the oxygen gas section in its atmospherics page, it is generally very good about having redirect pages to content that is already part of a larger page. there are redirect pages for certain items like tools on /vg/ but not for every item obviously because that would be a lot of work.

I think part of the reason why the wiki isn't updated much anyways is because if you can read BYOND code (which isn't that hard to read) then you're just going to get more specific and up-to-date information about whatever you're looking for by using github's search function. just search for the item name then that will lead to where it was declared which usually has all the information relating to things like stats, procs, and verbs, and if what you need isn't in that part of the code then you can just search the declaration path of said object to find all snowflake occurrences of it in the code. for most things i rarely use the wiki myself anymore because github search does a better job at getting me what i need
