sea of thieves
just picked this up and been sailing around solo while i learn the ropes, it's very comfy but i've been avoiding all the group content. is adventuring with randoms tolerable or do i need actual friends?

The only tolerable way to sail with randoms is looking for a group and grouping with people from the Sea of Thieves or even better, SoT Youtubers' discords.

Imagine four people with four completely different objectives in four completely different directions. Two of them don't have mics, one of them is severely ESL, and none of them care about (You)r objective. Like the other anon said, just bite the bullet and get on D*scord so you can join groups that are running what you want to run.
Anyway, how's the new season? Been away for a while but I'm gonna start playing again if any /vm/bros want to get a crew together.

don't feel like you have to start grouping up if you want to progress
if you want to get good at the game then keep playing solo and stop caring about loot
unironically just start spawning in grabbing whatever supplies you can and beelining towards the nearest ship you see
doesn't matter what they're doing
doesn't matter how outnumbered you sre
you will die a lot but each death will make you a better sailor
this is the only true path to gitting gud at pvp but it must be walked alone

>Anyway, how's the new season?
might be the worst one yet desu
the new content is:
>smuggler faction: they have one voyage and it's delivering cargo from one npc to another npc (reapers won't even buy the cargo kek) they're literally just merchant reskins except they're on non-outpost islands and they don't have ranks or emissaries
>you can have multiple pirates on the same account now but new ones start over from scratch and have to grind everything all over again
>this is their compromise solution for saving outfits
>you have to pay irl money for each new pirate btw
and that's it except for a new bullshit op keg that can oneshot galleons

I only find this game bearable playing duo sloop with one of my friends.
You can join the official Discord, but your mileage may vary. Nowadays, everyone's just doing hourglass PvP and have absurd joining requirements, lots won't let you play with them unless you no-lifed this game and are 800+ levels in hourglass.

Actual good advice here, solo slooping will make you much better about learning how to manage your ship.

Playing with randos is fine, you just need to understand that most people join with the intent to be swabbies. They're not there to be a crew, they don't have much ambition of their own, they will be coming and going, but as long as you have a clear goal for the voyage, then they'll give you a fairly decent baseline of competence.

I am trying to get back into this game and looking for people to play with. Have 350 hours according to steam but haven't played in a few years so not super up to date on whatever new stuff they've added in the past couple seasons.

Feel free to add:

theres a premium skin you can get for I think like $7. You can also get that purely in game but it takes some luck to find the NPCs that drop the premium currency.

All the skeletal costumes in the shop are way too over-the-top, though.
I just want to be a regular skelly.

Oh, is the black keg new? I just started playing this with friends and we've discovered that it makes ghost ship fights kind of short
>one player launches themselves onto the ghost ship
>finds the keg
>shoots the keg
>no more ghost ship

I haven't played in 2 years but random queuing back then was requeuing for an hour until you find people who have mics, aren't children, and aren't planning on leaving instantly to find people who are in the middle of something to sponge up gold
I highly doubt things have changed

Should I finish all tall tales on safer seas first before going into multiplayer? Haven't played in years, back when safer seas didn't exist yet and even back then wasn't exactly super experienced.

Random open crews are the best! Every adventure is a crapshoot, you never know if you'll even turn in any treasure and sometimes you get a full crew of pros/sweats and rule the sea without any fear.

No it's not the worst path but it's not the best, they literally added an instant pvp battles option to the voyages desk. If you'll looking to get good at pvp, that's your best choice.

I don't know, playing with randoms seems like complete garbage to me. I want to grind up the factions and earn all the shit, but no one in this game seems to want to do this and like half the players seem to be latin american
most of the time my experience joining a crew instead of starting one is coming in to some noobs aimlessly sailing around or warping to "other seas" over and over looking for someone to fight(they don't know hourglass exists). No one has emissary, no one is doing a voyage, people are not playing this game organically at all.
Even when I start on my own ship on private and open the crew there's only like a 1 in 8 chance the other person who joins is going to be competent, not be an asshat, not be from paraguay, actually vote at all
the fact that people on their own captain'd ship can't even kick is insane
