It's made for console plebs. You can easily use a controller. Otherwise just use a keyboard (not mouse). Number pad to move, arrows to look, alt/control for macros. It's tough to get used to.

considering giving the free trial a go and rolling on Odin. i'd like to experience the story and content but i'm not really worried about endgame, i think it'd be fun grinding out the classes and stuff and just enjoying the horizontal progression. Blue Mage in particular is interesting to me, that's usually my favorite class in the single player games. i did try Horizon and while i liked the base game i think i'd just prefer to play a DPS class and go through everything with trusts, way more comfy and less reliant on group RNG.

Depends on the era. Modern retail is like xivtrash. So your only hope is an era pserver. The stories were largely put off until you hit certain levels but were never necessary, just give nice benefits. Some were more important than others but again never necessary, do it when and if you want. It feels nothing like XIV. The cutscenes are relatively very short so its not intrusive at all.

and that's assuming it's a network thing and not a hardware thing. right now i'm trying to fix the issue of teh game recognizing every single button on my controller except left d-pad (the gamepad config recognizes it but not ingame). i figured Steam input would help but for some reason even with the overlay off it causes the game to stutter every 3-5 seconds so now i have to use Joy2Key to bind left dpad to my left arrow button on my keyboard. which is retarded. 24 hours into my free trial and 90% of it has been spent troubleshooting japanese PC port jank.

Retail probably wouldn't be bad if you had a few friends to play with, it has good progression until you hit Odyssey/Sortie then it turns into complete shit which is why I refuse to go back. Trusts do make solo grinding less annoying but you're really just playing FF12 without the gambit system at that point.
If you don't have friends to play with Horizon is actually pretty decent, it has a steady influx of new players and most of the time people are pretty chill though I've heard endgame is complete cancer. Just don't go on the discord for anything but server updates, the devs are indeed faggots but you can ignore them pretty easily. Making money can be difficult on that server though and you do actually need to buy gear unlike FF14. Also, no matter which you play you will absolutely need to look stuff up, the game was designed with the assumption you would have read the manual that came with the original PS2/PC release.
