If you think about it, Teal Mask has the player save Ogerpon in a much similar way as Ash saved Latias in Movie 5. They are also both girls who lose or lost someone dear to them and also find a new friend they become overly attached to. The main difference is Ogerpon goes with the player, whereas Latias is left behind by Ash. So, in essence, Ogerpon is meant to recreate the experience we had with Latias before and it appeared to work just as well as it did back then for people.

The original Movie's script had it where she was supposed to go with Ash, but it was changed for some unknown reason. The Leak later did show that as you say. This mainly shows that there seems to have been at least someone on the staff that really wanted to push Latias with Ash. He probably kept getting overruled.

There's actually so much potential with what they could have done with her. Throughout the movie it showed her able to unleash great power when pushed such as when she overpowered and overflowed the DMA and later when she broke Latios' prison. We could have episodes of Ash helping her bring that out more. Then other times we could have her messing around as a human and trying to pull Ash into a bunch of things to do with her. Pretty well done series so far. This particular part is the second part of the main story, or the fifth part of the overall whole of it all. Part one is purely setup for the premise that eventually leads to this part. These things include the bonds that Serena gains with particular Pokémon that she ends up catching and using in this story along with why Ash returned to Alto Mare to begin with. Ash essentially is growing restless due to all of his failures and believes he may very well not be cut out for what he loves to do, this feeling continues to grow until it boils over from his repeated failures against Korrina's Mega Lucario. This makes him realize he needs to try another approach...to try something new because what he's doing is obviously not working out for him. For Serena she's drifting with her only real motivation being Ash, but her time with Ash and asking him for why he loves what he does helps create a drive for her to take part in that very thing herself.
Part two is where we visit Latias for the real first time and get to see her mental state. We get to see that the events from the movie have left a lasting impact on her and that time has done nothing but make things worse for her.
Part three is apparently not canon so doesn't really matter. Part four and six focus on Clemont and his own challenges.
The author does a really good job in keeping each character true to their canon self, each chapter actually feels like it could be a legitimate episode in the anime. The amount of setup and the way they pace the story lends itself to making the divergence feel reasonable.

This brings us to this piece here where we have Ash and Latias reunite and Serena takes on her journey. If you like Altoshipping, then the moments we get in Alto Mare are really satisfying scenes. You have Ash essentially help heal or open Latias back up from her reduced state she was in from part two and you get to see things build toward her leaving with Ash on his journey. Latias is given pretty heavy emphasis in her potential and power from the training we see her get from Charizard, the battle she has against Lucario, and the second Paul battle. She's given the respect one would expect for a legendary similar to what you'd expect if it was Tobias' own Latios. As for Serena, you get payoffs for all the build up we were given from part one. Amaura and Diancie being the biggest things as she progresses in her own journey to collect badges.

This is where I want to focus on Ash in particular. It's stated at the end of part 5 that he has finally worn off the rust and is back to the same form he was in during Sinnoh...but he's not. He left to go to Alto Mare because he was unable to defeat Korrina with his team. His team has grown no stronger than they had been since then. He has grown no better than he had been since than. The only change he has gotten is Latias. This is actually really well demonstrated in all of her big battles we see. Against Charizard, he recognizes her as possessing great potential. Against Lucario, her first battle, she takes the win without really much trouble. This is the same Pokémon that Ash had to run to Alto Mare to begin with for. It's a DIFFERENT Lucario, granted, but it's pretty damn convenient that the first Pokémon Latias faces is the Pokémon Ash is unable to overcome before her. Paul is the most blatant with it because we see Ash fight him two different times. In the first battle where he doesn't use Latias, he loses with Pikachu being his only real notable member for the fight. In the second battle where he uses Latias, he wins with her doing major work. He even misplays horribly in this battle because he fell right into Paul's trap where Pikachu got hit with Curse + Block.

This also brings me to the weakness that Kalos Ash has that Sinnoh Ash did not have. Kalos Ash immediately began to tunnel vision to Greninja once he realized he had a special form. He gave him a lot more focus and training than every other member of his team and this is what ended up biting him in the ass when he fought Alain in the end. If you rewatch Ash vs Alain, you quickly realize how badly trained his other Pokémon are besides Pikachu and Greninja. Ash getting Latias at this point is basically being shown as the equivalent to him being handed a perfected Ash-Greninja and this is before she gets a Mega Stone. The Paul he faces here is also probably above everyone Kalos Ash fights in the normal series besides Alain himself and he beat him. This sort of gives the impression that the only way he should struggle is if he intentionally refrains from using Latias, which isn't in character for someone like Kalos Ash or until we meet Alain.
So rather than being back to form as Sinnoh Ash...he's more like an emulation of Tobias, but instead of Darkrai and Latios, he uses Pikachu and Latias.

To address your point about Ash and his development, I have to handily disagree. You'll notice from the moment Ash finds what's missing, he pivots hard on his strategizing and training, to give everyone the focus they need. He helps Fletchinder and Hawlucha unlock their abilities (Flame Body and Unburden), the former of which is an essential part of his strategy against Paul, he begins reusing techniques from his Sinnoh days like Counter Shield far more effectively, and he's playing around with aggressive switching and maneuvering around entry hazards. In the course of his rematch, he immediately begins playing around his hazard manipulation techniques, and calls out strategies Paul was going to use before he used them (Using Blizzard to weaponize Toxic Spikes). Ash has objectively returned to the kind of battling he used to do back in Sinnoh.
You do make a good point that Paul is probably above most of the challenges Ash has ahead of him in Kalos. This was intentional! From here on out, beyond a few important spikes in difficulty (Alain, Wulfric, the league, and a new character), Ash's main challenges going forward will be the new enemies he faces along the way (Team Flare) and his own personal rivalry with Serena, as he moves from being her mentor to being fierce rivals. Add to that his dive into mastering Mega Evolution and Bond Phenomenon, and Ash will have more to think about arc-to-arc than who's ever up next in the gym leader docket. For him, the gyms will be more like checkpoints, places to compare his performance to Serena's, and places where Ash can cut his teeth on the various strategies the region has to offer.

Being realistic, overcoming Alain should be more of a challenge than most, if not all, of the league. His Mega Charizard is actually insane in terms of feats when you really look at it and the anime does a really bad job of hyping up Diantha at every turn. You are right about Serena being an important element to take into account, so I do give you this as well.
Overall, I wasn't intending to sound negative in my review, I do think you've done a really good job writing this series so far and I look forward to seeing what else you have in store with it. It does surprise me that it wasn't intended to be an altoshipping story though.

Definitely agreed about Alain, he's insane, and TSN is going to push him even higher. Diantha has also been given a big upgrade you've seen hinted at the end of Book 2. And of course, Serena is going to be a challenge all her own :3

Funny enough, the initial version of TSN (from, god, ten years ago now) was an explicit altoshipping fic, I pulled back on that to focus on the story more, and because I wanted to sell people on a lot of my ships (Alto, Shalour, etc), before I commit to everything after Kalos. Plus, keeping the main story from being an explicit shipping fic means I get to have a lot more crazy moments. See: Korrina trying to get Ash in bed, or pic related.

Considering he's the only other of Ash's Pokemon to appear in the movie, I think Totodile deserves a mention. Totodile likes to play around and have fun and Latias is more than happy to play games. That should at the very least give them some common ground and I could see her playing along with his antics on some occasions, while also being really good about rounding him up if Ash needed her to.

I write Latias as part of Ash's XY crew, so I've got some pretty solid dynamics for the lot of them.

Very familiar relationship thanks to their extended history together. Pikachu will often casually hop atop her like he would Ash and she's generally very comfortable with it. He treats her like a reserve in a lot of ways and that respect gave her a fast inroad with the rest of the XY gang when she joined.

As the other main flyer of the team and a cocky, hot-headed battler herself, Fletchinder tends to domineer and tease Latias whenever she can, holding her own more robust battle experience over the dragon in the process. While she's not faster than Latias, Latias cannot hit a moving target to save her life, so Fletchinder can often just fly circles around her during practice, leading to an even more over-inflated ego. She still respects the girl deep down and will generally take credit for when Latias improves, on account of the fact that they train together.
>Hawlucha
The eldest of the Kalos Trio (Frogadier, Fletchinder, and him) and subsequently the most mature, Hawlucha takes on a more mentorish dynamic with Latias, training her skills in grappling over time. She's his most pleasant of his training partners, compared to Fletchinder and Frogadier who are constantly bickering and trying to one-up one another. (Hawlucha loves 'em, but their own personal rivalry often eats the focus of any training session). Latias, in comparison, is a lot more straightforward of an experience— Even if her speed and strength often leave him reeling.

Latias is Frogadier's #1 fan, on account of a really good first impression where she saw him battle. She thinks he's the absolute coolest and will not hesitate to show it, whether it's cheering him on or just invading his personal space for a hug on a whim. Frogadier pretends to be cool and aloof to the attention, but he does secretly like it— Much to the giggling of the rest of Kalos Trio

One last note, since they have trained together— Charizard. Charizard, like with the rest of the XY Gang, has little respect for Latias to start out with, on account of them being noobies. In Charizard's mind, respect has to be earned, which is why he tends to disregard the rest of the team with the exception of Pikachu. This came to a turn when Charizard took the reins in training Latias, intent on showing her *his* style of battling. After egging her on more and more, he eventually got her to go all out and seriously rock his shit. Though she didn't 'win' (battle ended after that), he gained a newfound respect for her, and came to seriously believe in her potential to be a powerful battler. He's not the kind to be overly sweet to her or anything, but she knows for a fact he respects him, at least a little.

Pikachu's makes a lot of sense and is the natural progression from the movie. Not much else to comment on because it's just solid like this.
Flinchinder's is cute and I can't wait to see how their dynamic evolves when she becomes a Talonflame and Latias becomes more refined in her combat ability.
Hawlucha's is really cool as it's consistent with his behavior in the anime. This also works as setup for when Ash gets his next member who he had a really strong relationship with in the anime already.
As for Frogadier...it's just really fitting that the Pokémon Ash is intuned with ended up impressing Latias and gaining favor from her.
I know you haven't gotten to him yet, but any hints about the type of relationship you're planning her to have with Noivern?
I do like how you essentially knitted a full party dynamic with her and the rest here.

Thanks!! Getting a dynamic for the group down (The Kalos Trio, the reserves, Latias as a sort of bridge between them all) was one of the most fun parts of writing this whole continuity and really helped them all feel like the characters they're meant to be.
Ooooh, Latias and Noivern. That one is a hard one to get into, considering the circumstances of how Noibat gets introduced in this continuity. For the sake of keeping it a surprise, I'll just tell you this: Noivern ends up as a big of a problem child for the group, all-in-all :3

It's pretty much perfect to me as it maintains Charizard's cocky behavior, while giving him a tempered aspect from his own personal growth he's undergone. I also appreciate it showcasing Latias' potential and having had her EARN the respect Charizard has for her.
Also, I like that you actually take into account the potential she has as shown in the movie. Most stories conveniently forget she overloaded the DMA when she was pushed by Oakley and that she was the one that freed Latios in her desperation to save him. She always had great power, but lacked the confidence and experience to really put it to proper use.
