I knew that about sea slugs prior to Pokémon, but only learned of the Iberian ribbed newt today. Pokémon's great for learning titbits of real world animal behaviours.

Evolutionary arms race, the newts were clearly predated heavily on, so eventually evolved to be able to break their ribs and secrete poison, likely as they were gobbled into predator's mouths whole, so could use them to scratch the soft tissues of the mouth and ensure the poison got into them.

They really did their homework for Paldea dex, for example for the last 30 years the south of Spain had a problem with parrots from other lands arriving, reproducing and taking the ecological niche of theor native birds, this environmental issue has only gotten worse over the years and is reflected in Paldea's regional bird, Wattrel (based on hydrobatidae whose distribution area surround the iberan peninsula) not being found in the first areas of the game which take place in the south.
