why did they give gym leaders as comapions? it makes no sense, they should be kanto celebrities

Godspeed. You’ll have plenty of episodes between the beginning of Kanto and the end of Johto.

1. Misty is less famous than her beautiful sisters. Heck, many gym leaders are not instantly recognized by the group.
2. Brock spent too much time taking care of his siblings to become famous.
3. Both are seemingly younger than their game counterparts, probably making them less accomplished.
4. In the original series, gym leaders were not always an authority nor were there just 8 gyms per league.

RGB was lacking in named characters, so instead of a simple flip like the Red Pallet-swap, they'd have had to invent original characters for the journey; so instead they just used the lowest level gym leaders.
