>What is PokeMMO?
Gen 1 t- 5 in an MMO environment. Pick whatever region you want to start in. Unique balance/breeding system, raids, alpha's ect.

>How's the battling?
Custom movesets generally based around Gen V. Most battles in the game have been revamped into competitive comps with smarter AI, expect Focus Sash, Air Balloon, Red Card nightmares and random bullshit catching you off guard.

>How's the economy?
Balanced. After a 4th Gym completion, you get access to the GTL where you can buy/sell most Pokemon and items to make money, or travel to a different region completely. Shinies are harder to get, and breeding will consume both parents to make an egg, making perfect IV bred mons an incentive for profit. The berry system also can be utilized as a crafting system for medicine items like PP UPs, EV training ect.

>Won't Nintendo take this down?
Nintendo have historically taken the devs to court to get it shut down. They failed since it operates in a legal grey area. (all ROM assets are provided by the users, nothing server side is stolen/intellectual property) PokeMMO has been running for over 13 years.

Admittedly, I haven't played PokeMMO but I'm thinking about starting. I just copied this OP from a previous attempt to start a general in the archive. What's the /vp/ consesus on it? Is there enough interest for a general?

cool to see a thread for this
I've been playing again recently.
still in the old /vp/ guild from six years ago but it's a little depressing because everyone is dead.

just realized you added something at the bottom of the post.
>What's the /vp/ consesus on it? Is there enough interest for a general?
from my experience /vp/ never cares that much about the fan-made mmo games but on rare occasions you can see some increased interest like with team FUG in pokemmo six years ago.

>Admittedly, I haven't played PokeMMO but I'm thinking about starting.
I personally think it's pretty fun and worth trying even if you only go through one or more of the story modes and then quit again because the adjusted difficulty and some of the original boss fights like Ho-oh are pretty cool.
do keep in mind that the endgame is almost entirely PvP or grinding for 1/30,000 rate shinies.

Are you sure that they're actually roms of the games? It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure part of the controls are using a mouse on what would otherwise be the top (non touch) screen. I also don't recall a bottom screen and think that the move selection menu is radically different. Are you sure it requires actual roms from the user and isn't just a fangame (with ripped assets of course) that asks for roms from the user as pretense?

both. the game takes the assets from the roms you have to provide yourself so the devs don't have to provide any official pokemon assets to download.

so if I had a romhack that just changed a few graphics or something, would that actually be playable in pokemmo?

I would expect them to have systems in place that check if you provided the correct roms but I haven't tried. I know there are a lot of mods that add 3d models instead of 2d sprites for Pokemon in battle and similar stuff.

I started playing around August 2023 a week or so after the release of Johto and honestly really enjoyed playing through gens 1 to 5 again with the better QoL to the point I have since dumped over 1000 hours into it, mostly just jumping back in during events or just to grind out some money for cosmetics. It really has the laid back Runescape vibe, where you can play while watching a movie or something on the side. Just hope they add more endgame stuff, the raids are a good start though.

There used to be a pretty active general here and a guild circa 2019ish but it has since become dead, and most of /vg/ is too pro-Nintendo bootlickers to give this game a try. If you're on the fence about playing this, I definitely recommend it. The trainers aren't actually braindead like in the regular games and gym leaders have good movesets that counter the typical Pokemon cheese tactics so just bringing your overleved starter around won't work

Not a hater of Pokemmo but that sounds stupid, breeding is alredy a pretty badly designed mechanic (and even worse with the fact that only a few people actually now how to breed)

it feels horrible after having experienced breeding with all of the modern qol mechanics that made breeding so easy in official games.
They did it to make sure the game has a functioning economy since it's an MMO but it does make PvP an absolutely massive grind to get into outside of randbats.

Haven't played pokemmo but simply making Ditto unavailable (or make it so it gets consumed when breeding) would be a far better decision, that way you would have to chain Egg groups for IV breeding without fucking the economy (or rather make it so getting a 5 IVs parent is a long term investment)

removing Ditto would only really change it to requiring a good IV father for every egg group instead of one Ditto.
not really that much of a difference long term.
I don't like the system and it's the reason I originally quit back during the /vp/ general hype in 2019 but I do understand why they need a custom solution to prevent the game being flooded with worthless perfect Pokemon.
This is still better than the Pokemon Revolution Online method of removing breeding entirely and simply being fucked in PvP if you can't encounter a perfect Pokemon randomly.
Overall I wouldn't recommend PokeMMO to someone with the main goal to play a ton of PvP.

Sure, it's not perfect but you could put a bit of effort into getting your own perfect parent or Trade for an IV donor (and rather than multiple fathers you would only need a decent Field-egg group parent to transfer IVs to pretty much all other egg groups)
I get why but it makes PvP/Shiny hunting even worse (having multiples regions seems nice tho)

it does make it a lot more painful.
the game has the most autistic shiny hunters you'll ever see. they'll farm months worth of pokeyen to finance their 1/30,000 odds shiny hunting.
an MMO does have the benefit that shinies are still special because people can't hack them in and the game isn't throwing them at you every few minutes like modern games but grinding out your shiny target over weeks or months with those odds certainly requires some heavy mental illness.

You will need roms from Fire Red/LG to White/Black then install Pokemmo and make an account, pretty sure there's plenty of videos on YouTube if you need help. Other than that its just basic Pokemon

it tries to be more of a grindy mmo with an active economy like Runescape. It isn't pretending to be an alternative for Showdown.

it might have been more balanced when that OP text was originally written.
it could be worse but yes, the economy has seen better days especially for 1x31s and 2x31s

MMOs are more of socializing tool than a game in general

i think that's fine.
pvp is a long-term goal to hypothetically strive for, even if you never actually end up getting around to it. that's how it is in most MMOs.

showdown is generally better for your competitive pokemon pvp fix than anywhere else anyways (more players, more formats, more convenient)

pokemmo is more for people who liked the cartridge games. the problem with the cartridge games is they feel empty and boring in retrospect. turning them into an MMO fixes that.

a big part of MMOs is socialization, but also progress in MMOs "feels more meaningful" than progress in single player games.

in the official pokemon games, everyone just injects. what is even the point of shiny hunting or collecting or whatever on cartridge, the gameplay loop you're "supposed to do", when everyone just injects anyways. any time put into those games feels meaningless.

pokemmo is older than XY but unlike the 3DS online which has been shut down (and was always riddled with hacks anyways), pokemmo is still going.

the pokemon experience is simply better encapsulated as an MMO.

game freak / nintendo / tpc have never provided a good a multiplayer experience. pokemon itself was a good idea, but in many senses wasted potential. fan projects rectify that.
