Phonetic languages, especially one whose letters represent mouth shapes like korean, is good if you want to teach an existing speaking population with a large vocabulary to be able to read.
Etymological languages like english are superior for existing readers to become more educated.
It also helps with learning other languages, since words are still spelled in ways that resemble their origin. I have a cursory knowledge of the spelling rules of french, latin, greek, german, spanish, and italian because I speak english with a large vocabulary.
