So
Were Ultra Beasts a good idea?

They were fun. Anyone who says otherwise is a retard that just wants pokemon to be elemental animals.

It was a garbage idea to begin with and even worse it led to Paradox mons which are just ultra beasts with a different ability and rehashed designs. This was the beginning of the end. They should have just focused on making high quality remasters of the older gens instead of splitting their manpower between shitty new gens and shitty chibimakes.

I like all of them to some degree. Ultra beasts are probably my favourite part of SM.

No, 570 BST minmaxed mons were a horrible idea and were the gateway to paradox mons.

Its design is too complex to be a normal pokemon

MissingNo could have been THE perfect UB if GameFreak could accept the fact that mistakes are human.

This, all Pokemon should be shitmons. Having them be good at something is stupid and bad game design.

phero and the poipole line sure, nihilego absolutely not, and I get it with buzzwole, conceptually it could pass for a normal mon but it's stylistically really far from the series' normal

They were cool but SM opened the door to too many weird and subsequently ignored things for the sake of canon that just cannot be explored to a satisfactory degree.

Very good idea, I liked these beings from another dimension that are the UBs.
Then it was used as a basis (statistics at 570, special ability, common element at the end of the cry, value in prime, even and odd numbers), to create the Pokémon Paradoxes which come from a distant past or a distant future. This made it possible to cover new themes, such as Darwian evolution.
This adds richness and depth to the licence.

This ranking is dumb. Nihilego, Buzzwole, and Pheromosa perfectly sold the theme of Ultra Beasts. People had theories out the ass about what kind of creatures they were because they didn't resemble Pokemon.

Yes.
And only Pheromosa and maybe Naganadel fit the "regular pokémon" description.
Pheromosa is still be a top tier design despite not fitting the theme, so whatever.

Nihilego is definitely supposed to be exotic matter, glass that doesn’t behave like glass, instead it’s a jellyfish.

It’s only “normal” in the context that Gilimmet and Glimmora are essentially the same concept, except different sea life. But that has nothing to do with Nihilego as a pokemon, more that Glimmora is kinda an Ultra Beast.

I don’t think it’s game freak. They were wild with some supplemental material before the ip solidified its value globally.

I always blame TPCi. The leaks, at least to me, showed that GF was always trying to be interesting and creative, but somewhere along the process the corporation hammers them back in line.

But like the whole situation is worse than you think. It’s not that TPCi is afraid of acknowledging their mistakes, they’re afraid of acknowledging… anything. Decades before there was global awareness of individual pokemon designers, or that pokemon in the same line were designed by different people. On top of that, esoteric designs or lore elements that get at least half-implemented into the games get no explanation for the players because the parts that would give context or explanation were cut completely even though the ideas were still obviously used on to design content that didn’t get cut. TPCi just deeply resents letting anyone see behind the curtain at all.

It feels like the most stereotypical Japanese corporate hierarchy thing in the world.

Unironically, i'd love some middle of the road/shitmon ultra beasts and paradoxes. Is literally every creature/being there 570+? Make it fun. Iron Bundle is absolutely cracked, but maybe the paradox version of kingambit is a simipour equivalent.
