Yes, beat R2 in both games with rentals only.

Yes it's good.
My boyfriend visits me twice a year. I play Crystal, he plays Gold, and whenever we meet, we duke it out on Stadium 2 on my N64. It's fun.

I went as far as rentals would take me due to NSO being the only affordable way to play it.

I never actually played the first one but I beat the second one multiple times. It's a lot of fun if you bring your own team from GSC. Playing with rentals is miserable though.

Beat them both, mostly with Game Boy imports, and remember enjoying them. R-2 Master Poke Cup and R-2 Master Challenge Cup both deserve a socking to the jaw, though. Red/Blue teams actually go quite far in the second games, that I remember, if you exploit your unofficial unlimited TMs.

Always nice when you can arrange something like that.

Quite true, they overcompensated heavily in 2 but the first game's are typically at least functional.

I concur although I do think Little Cup is an exception to that rule:
>Abra knows Psychic and Thief
>Voltorb knows Mirror Coat and Thunder
>Horsea knows Hydro Pump
>Mankey knows Cross Chop
>Phanpy knows Earthquake and Flail
>Ponyta knows Fire Blast

Stadium 1 still had this shit. The rentals are all level 15, so you either have to fight level 20 Alakazam or level 20 Dragonair. I think Electrode is the only rental Pokemon who can even outspeed Alakazam.

Not sure why you're trying to make it sound as though Pika Cup is the only division in Stadium 1. Gym Leader Castle, Poké Cup, Prime Cup, and Petit Cup all have a handful of good rentals. And with a little dedication even Pika Cup Round 2 isn't insurmountable with rentals (even my 7-year-old ass managed to conquer it eventually, although I was admittedly very lucky as rental Gengar's Confuse Ray winning the speed tie to Lv. 20 NAIRISH led to her hitting herself in confusion three times in a row).

It was, I don't know if it still is from modern standards.

As someone who only played Pokémon during my childhood, I'd always find weird when people trashtalked N64's graphics.

is Pika Cup the most pointless cup? Little Cup in the next game is the same thing but better. Stadium 1 has Petit cup which only allows NFEs (with Farfetch'd and Ditto being exceptions) but oddly isn't the cup with the lowest level mons. What Stadium 2 did makes more sense.

At the time, it was something of a knowledge check to see if you knew how to get strong pokemon at low levels, since breeding didn't exist yet and the resources to obtain that knowledge were more scarce. TMs were also still single-use, once-per-playthrough deals, so a good Pika Cup team was a considerable investment. The social aspect was also a big deal there, since other kids could trade pokemon and lend things like strategy guides, cheats, and glitches to make things easier. I remember the guide I had back then even had a section teaching how to dupe items with missingno.

It was the most meta-gamey ("I can't get any good Pokemon at levels this low, what the hell! Wait a minute...") and the most devious, because unlike Little Cup in which you could largely just catch a new set of unevolved Pokemon, it forced you to create an entirely new fully-evolved team to the same power level as a "typical" one for Poke/Prime Cup/Gym Castle. I do appreciate it for that, in that someone looked the game's design hard enough and realized you could exploit non-leveling evolution methods to clear the low-level condition. But it is devious for it.

The experience of these games would have been quite different without it, even with the speed-up Game Boy Tower.

the problem is they have rentals for Haunter and Gengar when you can't even get them below level 21
but others like Alakazam and the Nidos are possible though

Technically, most Pika Cup rentals are illegal. For instance, it's impossible for you to get a Charmeleon/Wartortle/Ivysaur/Nidorino/-na/-king/-queen/Kadabra/Alakazam below Lv. 16 in RBY yet all rentals are at Lv. 15 for the sake of convenience.
