Ash is a decently executed shonen protagonist and not too obnoxious like Naruto was for most of his series. The original series in particular showed off character growth and gave Ash a sense of humor and sarcasm. The issue is they let him stagnate for over a decade because they were afraid he wouldn't be relatable if he were a high level trainer or if he aged up by one year. Which should make you very scared for Liko's future.
