>Mewtwo shows up
>fights Mew for a few seconds
>everyone starts crying
>gives up and disappears

I watched the Japanese version. Does the English dub add an actual story? Mewtwo vs Mew is not even well animated, it's just two blobs of light bouncing into each other. The credits scenery is better than the actual movie.

Mewtwo wants to be the best and strongest trainer so invites a bunch of weak and unproven trainers to feel good about himself. Meanwhile he'd job instantly if someone like Lance had shown up as he can barely even take on Team Rocket elites as shown in the second movie.

The entire point was that Mewtwo was created artificially to be a superior copy of another creature, so he wants to prove, primarily to himself, that he has the right to exist by demonstrating that he IS, in fact, superior.

Maybe pay attention to the dialogue next time.

Where were any of these elements developed? There is zero reason to give a shit about Mewtwo and his heel turn makes no sense. His relationship with the scientist's daughter disappears after the intro (probably because it was shoehorned into the home release after the writer(s) realised they forgot to add a story). Mew's involvement in the plot is random. The sequence where everyone starts crying and Nurse Joy makes this non-sequitur social commentary is bizarre and unintentionally comical.

It's honestly just a bunch of random fanservice fights with some nice visuals, which is fine for a Pokemon movie but I got the impression from hearing about it over the years that this one had a decent story. There's over a dozen episodes from the show with better stories with like 1/5 the length.

In the movie, you have to watch the movie and actually listen to the plot. You aren’t wrong, it is a licensed movie adaptation, and cool stuff is generally the intent with those. I generally do agree it is pretty overrated, but at least I had the ability to pay attention to dialogue as a kid, lol. Kids movie gets slightly deep, and you didn’t notice is fine, but this is literally basic plot points.
