The next remake is gonna be Johto. Everyone thinks it's Unova because there's been hype about it in the community in the beginning of the decade and because of some Ingo in PLA and Blueberry Academy (which itself is just there to satisfy that hype).
But the order of remakes has always been the order of all mainline games:
1. RBY > FRLG
2. GSC > HGSS
3. RSE > ORAS
4. FRLG > LGPE
5. DPPt > BDSP
Next in line to be remade is HGSS, so there won't be a port of it. Unova remakes will be next after Johto.

Hoenn (originally released in Gen 3) was remade in Gen 6 while Sinnoh (originally released in Gen 4) was remade in Gen 8.
So shouldn't Unova (originally released in Gen 5) be remade in Gen 10?
LGPE was released in Gen 7, between the remakes of Hoenn (Gen 6) and Sinnoh (Gen 8). Following the pattern, Johto remakes should've been released in Gen 9 between Gen 8 and Gen 10. I still think a Johto remake is likely, but it's also possible they skipped it.

The pattern isn't about doubling the gen number, it's just that each new remake is for the game whose latest iteration is the oldest. The latest iteration of Johto (HGSS) is older than that of Unova (BW, BW2).
As for why there's no remake in gen 9 - there isn't really a requirement that each new gen contains a remake, gen 5 didn't have one. I think they are just prioritizing the new gen 10 game to have it out for the franchise's anniversary

I'd prefer a sequel rather than a remake.

They should do a combined sequel to HGSS and FRLG, starting in Kanto and moving to Johto.

Have it set 10-20 years after HGSS so we can see a grown up Red and Blue, new gym leaders, developed towns etc.
