I liked the water current routes. It was like the Johto routes from Blackthorn to New Bark but more unique and interesting

Hoenn had some of the coolest locations, pokemon, characters (especially in ORAS) and the whole "Evil team wants to destroy the world with god pokemon" schtick was still fresh and not the same thing for the n+1th time. Don't get why people hate the water, the water routes are well designed and add variety (not that Hoenn is lacking in it).

Hoenn is garbage with its offtune trumpets, lack of day/night cycle, grass and forests absolutely everywhere excluding the sea, robot-looking god power creep legendaries force-fed down your throat instead of being hidden as a secret for you to find, incompatibility with gens 1-2 and boring friendly rivals that love being beaten and basically just fade into irrelevance as the game progresses.

Because it's not bad in the slightest. The open area around Sootopolis feels like open ocean instead of the linear water routes in other gens, diving gives access to hidden locations and a few new pokemon, the streams west of Pacifidlog are the beginning of one of the coolest puzzles and legendary hunts in the franchise. Only bad thing I see about it is the constant encounters, but that happens everywhere in early gens, so it's not really a fault of Hoenn in particular.

Too much water is just an IGN meme and was never a serious critique about the game. Diving was nothing more than an extra layer of labyrinth exploration. It never 'got in the way' of anything. Hell, they didn't even give you le' #icantbreathe timers.

Tall grass is like half the gameplay in early games, plus you can always use repels. I think the actual problem with the sea routes is variety, you only encounter wingull and tentacool.
