i first played it in like 2013 on an emulator and it was the most fun i had since gen 3 (kanto nostalgia). but i haven't played it again since so idk if it still holds up.

It was pretty good. I have my fair share of issues with it (pokemon evolving way too late, very limited dex, questionable writing at times) but all things considered I enjoyed it overall.
Borts are without a doubt the single most obnoxious genwar "faction" though.

It's probably the best first version, which isn't a super high bar to hit. You could make arguments that something like RS or SM are better, but then I'd point out the parts where those games shit themselves but if you don't care about that part then you're fine. BW is average in all the correct ways to make it a solid experience overall outside of maybe the unskippable cutscenes which were at the end of becoming not the standard at the time and has only become a bigger glaring flaw with not just BW but every Pokemon game before and since. It's not the most difficult campaign, but it's got a few decent fights and is neither a slog or too trivial. It's not the best designed region, and the map design isn't always impressive, but the overall design of the region is solid with lots of optional content before and after the credits. It was arguably the best story until SV, and even though it's kinda scuffed between being written for actual children and being overly literal because it was TPC's first translation Bianca's arc is still some of the best writing in Pokemon which is kind of depressing. The game starts good, but between the second town and the first gym you get hit with "we're deathly afraid of losing the WiiDS audience" content but it quickly stops unlike shit from that era like Skyward Sword. It's just a fairly well balanced game, which Pokemon is shockingly fucking awful at. To somebody who isn't discerning it could be considered just as good (or bad) as XY, but there's enough major differences that experience is dramatically different.

BW and XY are equal opposites. BW has a unique story with heavy focus, and a smaller dex of new entries where everything feels deliberately placed but may leave the player struggling for options on repeat playthroughs. XY has a formulaic story that's just sort of there, and while its huge dex means you'll never run out of teambuilding options, it feels like they were trying to cram as much old shit as possible.

Go ahead and bring up road blocks, because in the first 3 gym badges you have lumiose city which is a hallway despite appearing gigantic because of a power outage (unfinished content), and then the power plant which had 4/5 areas you couldn’t even access even with the pass in your inventory. I really liked that they stuck to new pokemon for the whole game, the dex itself was just poorly done imo.
Way too many mons felt like retreads of gen 1 pokemon (though I actually still like most unova mons) and there's the weird bullshit of everything evolving too late.
Also it made the sequel exciting because you got to see all the old mons in the wild again.

Lysandre being completely detached from reality. Hates greedy people because he considers it ugly, but basically every Team Flare grunt is just the fucking worst with zero redeeming members. Is willing to kill all Pokemon, despite Pokemon being depicted almost universally as generally purehearted without evil influence (that he plans to eradicate by the way). And we see zero of the negative shit he doesn't like during the course of the game, fucking SM gives a better argument for his attitude with Team Skull simply existing. BW at least made some cursory attempts to make your average NPC reconsider, plus the grunt and the Patrat in N's Castle alone is absolutely fascinating in the context of the game's themes.

It's never explained why Lysandre's lackeys are exactly the kind of people he hates so he comes across as a hypocrit. I just presume he takes their joining fee money for his own goals (thus using them since he sees them as leeches) but as it stands, why would he turn immortal or keep alive only the very kind of people he despises? Sons and daughters of rich families that never had to work hard and coast on their family's success, with no purpose in life on top of it all. You'd think they'd be the first of his chopping line instead.
It was an interesting part of the game but he never says, implicitly or explicitly, that he has no intention to keep his idiot grunts alive. Instead he will have his ideal world of idiots if he manages to succeed.
Ghetsis is a far less interesting character than Lysandre imo but at least in BW (don't remember in 2 and don't care for it honestly) it was clear he despised everyone but himself and used his cult members for his own goal.
Lysandre had the potential to be the best villain in the series but the way his Team is written brings him down.

I don't care for Gen 5's story, I care about Gen 6's story. The game explicitly shows that a lot of Flare *Grunts* are rich kids with no dreams or purpose in life which is a type of person that fits Lysandre's description of the useless trash people he hates to a T. It's clear that he does not just value material richness but also inner beauty, virtue and skill seeing as he respects Dianthia and Sycamore. His Admins are also more or less implied to be geniuses but many of his Grunts are not, they're shallow idiots who got there thanks to their money and said money is being used to fuel a project some of them aren't even aware of.
What purpose does Lysandre have to have such trash people in his elite if not to extort money from them? It's an interesting concept but the way the game presents it just makes Lysandre look stupid.
